2025 Shore Conference Baseball Preview: Class C North
The C Divisions of the Shore Conference are all about redemption, with all seven teams between Class C North and C South finishing in the bottom half of their respective divisions in 2024 (Manchester technically finished in the middle as the fourth team out of seven in Class B South).
This is especially true in Class C North, which is home to seven teams that finished in fifth place or worse a season ago and will be trying to author a division championship season amid a new group of competitors.
Class A North is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Class C North, and one team makes the move from the Shore’s most loaded division into the division of bounceback candidates. Freehold Township is 12-30 in Class A North play over the past three years, but a respectable 19-16 against the rest of its schedule during the same period – a signal that this move into a new division could suit the Patriots well. It also does not hurt to have a legitimate ace in Jackson Redmond topping a solid rotation, which will be the strength of a team that has some questions in the lineup after a handful of key graduations.
Class A Central was also a hyper-competitive division a season ago, and Holmdel and Raritan were right in the thick of the action. Both teams were part of a three-way tie for last place (or fifth place if you are the glass-half-full type) along with Rumson-Fair Haven but also were competitive with top teams like Red Bank Catholic and Wall.
Holmdel brings back most of its lineup, which will be looking to rebound after a challenging year scoring runs after showing promise as a sophomore-heavy group in 2023. Senior Matt Iulo is a proven catcher and headliner for the lineup and will catch an intriguing pitching staff led by hard-throwing junior Dylan Zammit and classmate Jack Vallillo.
Raritan struggled to finish close games on top and will have most of last year’s group returning as the Rockets look to turn the tide in those games. With so much experience – particularly on the mound with Alan Warren, Jimmy Nichols and Will Meehan – Raritan might not have to play so many close games, especially if the veteran offense comes to life in support of the solid group of pitchers.
The rest of the teams in the newly formed C North are the bottom four from last year’s Class B North standings. That includes Red Bank, which is the only team between the two C divisions in this year’s Shore Conference that posted a winning record last year. The Bucs still might not mind the company in C North considering how inexperienced they will be when it comes to varsity at-bats and innings on the infield, but catcher Nick Walker will allay many of those concerns thanks to his established performance. The pitching will be slightly more experienced thanks the returns of Will Marziarz and Sean Keatts, and the outfield will be a trio of players with varsity track records to help spark the lineup.
St. John Vianney is coming off its second straight 6-16 season and is now under the direction of Bob Klatt – a head boys basketball coach with more than 300 career wins between Mater Dei Prep and Wall. This will be Klatt’s first season in charge in a high school dugout after St. John Vianney parted ways with longtime skipper and state championship-winning coach Mike Morgan. The Lancers might have led the Shore Conference in unique lineups last season, so they are looking for some stability with a group of players who have all had a taste of varsity action.
Freehold Boro and Neptune were the bottom two teams in Class B North a year ago and will face similar challenges this season. Freehold Boro graduated three key arms from a top-heavy staff, although the returns of centerfielder Nick Russo and catcher Tyler Kucken provide a dose of optimism. As for Neptune, the Scarlet Fliers bring back most of a lineup that went 0-14 in the division as juniors and sophomores and will be incorporating a trio of freshmen into what should be an improved core of the lineup.
