Opening Round
South Jersey Non-Public A
(6) St. John Vianney 5, (11) Union Catholic 1
Seniors Mason Boles and Alex Siniscalchi each scored two goals and classmate Isaiah Boone added a goal and an assist as the Lancers (12-6-4) rolled to a round-one win over the Vikings (4-11-2) to earn a shot at No. 3 St. Augustine in Thursday’s sectional quarterfinals.
Boone opened the scoring with a left-footed strike from the edge of the 18-yard box in the 14th minute after pouncing on a failed clearance by Union Catholic. In the 32nd, senior defender Luke Noble made a run up the flank and crossed the ball to the top of the six-yard box, where Siniscalchi finished his first goal of the game.
Six minutes later, seniors Chris Pohl and Ethan Eddleston worked a give-and-go, with Eddleston using a back-heel pass to play Pohl to the end-line. Pohl then crossed the ball to the doorstep of the goal, where Boles knocked it in from point-blank range for a 3-0 lead. Boles scored again in the 50th off a through-ball from Boone and Siniscalchi extended the lead to 5-0 in the 60th by ripping a loose ball off the far-left post and in.
(7) St. Thomas Aquinas 9, (10) Red Bank Catholic 3
Emmanuel Akobakoba scored five goals and assisted on two others as the Trojans (9-9-1) broke open a 3-3 game at halftime with six goals in the second half to power past the Caseys (5-14-2) and into the sectional semifinals Thursday at No. 2 CBA.
Colin Gains, James Main and Jack Denver each scored for Red Bank Catholic during the first half to help the Caseys keep up with the hosts and make it to the start of the second half even on the scoreboard.
South Jersey Non-Public B
(10) St. Rose 8, (7) Gloucester Catholic 0
Junior Ben Tilley went off for four goals and senior Owen Moran also rolled up a hat trick as the Purple Roses (2-17-1) exploded for eight goals in a first-round, road rout of the Rams (8-9-1). Senior Matt Dayton also tallied a goal for St. Rose, which will travel to play No. 2 Princeton Day Thursday in the sectional quarterfinals.
The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for St. Rose, which allowed at least six goals in each of the last seven of those losses before turning the tables on its opponent on Monday.
