“I got some nice teammates who really pick me up, they really help get me going,” said Wells
The game was closely contested throughout as WCT had the largest lead of the game at just 6 points early in the third quarter. The first half featured 12 lead changes and 8 ties and when it was said and done WCT led 52-49.
In the third quarter the defensive intensity really picked up and both teams’ offenses were stifled heading into the fourth quarter. Even deep into the 4th quarter, the defensive intensity from both teams really controlled the game. However, with the game tied at 86 with two minutes to go the offense finally picked up.
WCT forward Scott Gyimesi buried a clutch three pointer to give WCT the lead. ACI guard Sam Fagan responded by knocking down his fifth three pointer of the night to even the game up once again at 89.
WCT finally started to pull ahead with under a minute to go as Wells buried two free-throws to give them a lead that they would never relinquish. During the ensuing ACI possession Dwaine Jones drew a foul but was only able to make one of the two free throws. Scott Gyimesi converted a huge layup on the other end to extend WCT’s lead to three. ACI tried to push the pace and get a good look for three to tie the game. However, as Gio Panzini spotted up for three to try to tie the game he stepped out of bounds in the corner giving possession back to WCT.
Wells would make 6 clutch free throws in the last 13 seconds to put the game on ice and secure the victory for WCT.
“It’s a lot of time in the gym,” said Wells “I give credit to my dad because he’s someone that pressures me the most about making all my free throws. Doesn’t matter if I’m making or missing, I have to keep getting shots up and keep going because moments like these is where it comes up the biggest.”
Wells is looking for an opportunity to play overseas after being an All-NJAC honorable mention this past season when he averaged 16 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game, and 4.6 assists per game for William Paterson in his senior season.
