(2) Brick Memorial 3, (10) Steinert 1

Zach Pirnik pitched a three hit shutout to earn a win in his team’s third straight game and the bottom of the Brick Memorial order came through in the clutch as the Mustangs topped the Spartans in Hamilton to advance to the sectional semifinal Tuesday, which Brick Memorial will host against No. 6 Middletown South.

Pirnik earned the win in relief against Red Bank Catholic in Sunday’s Shore Conference Tournament championship, pitched the first four innings of a 10-0 win over Freehold Boro on Tuesday and went the distance Friday on 87 pitches to pick up his third win in a span of six days. Pirnik took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning on fewer than 70 pitches before finally giving up an unearned run, with Steinert scoring on a two-out error.

On the first pitch following the error, Pirnik induced a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Garbooshian, who handled this chance and completed the play for the final out.

Brick Memorial home run and RBI lead Dan Golembiewski put the Mustangs in front with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but it was the bottom of the order that did the adding on. No. 9 hitter Gavin McCue delivered a two-out RBI double to score Michael Figner from first in the bottom of the second, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, No. 8 hitter and second baseman Dan Popovitch lined an RBI single to centerfield to score Lucas Douglas and push the Brick Memorial lead to 3-0.

South Jersey Group 3

(2) Toms River East 9, (7) Hammonton 0 (5 Innings)

Joey DiMeo hit an RBI triple with one out in the bottom of the fifth to give Toms River East a 9-0 lead and move within 90 feet of ending the game via the 10-run rule just before the skies opened up and the game was called due to rain.

Hammonton conceded the game with the score, 9-0, and one out in the bottom of the fifth with the winning run on third base. By rule, NJSIAA Tournament games that are suspended due to rain are to be resumed the next day until the game is completed by rule, but Hammonton’s concession negates that as the Blue Devils elected not to travel back to Toms River to potentially play one batter.

Two batters before DiMeo, Jax Buatez extended Toms River East’s lead to 5-0 with an RBI single. Chase Caswell then followed with a bases-clearing double that blew the game open, 8-0, and scored on DiMeo’s triple.

Caswell also drove in Toms River East’s fourth run, which came on an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth that was the first of Caswell’s four RBI.

Dan Nafziger pitched a two-hit shutout over five innings to keep his record perfect at 8-0 and also opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, with Toms River East adding a second run in the inning on a passed ball. Mike Vaccarino made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the bottom of the third.

Toms River East will host the sectional semifinals Tuesday against No. 6 Shawnee, which knocked off defending champion and No. 3 seed Delsea.

Central Jersey Group 2

(5) Raritan 2, (13) Cinnaminson 1

Freshman Bear Evernham made his first career start on the mound and went the distance on 115 pitches to propel the Rockets past the Pirates and into the sectional semifinal Tuesday at No. 1 Governor Livingston.

Evernham entered Friday with 16 appearances and 25 2/3 innings in relief during his freshman season, including three saves. His most recent save came when he recorded the final out of Tuesday’s 4-1, round-one win over Spotswood.

While Evernham is used to recording the final out of the game, Friday marked the first time at the high school level that he finished a game that he also started. Prior to Friday, Evernham’s longest outing was 4 innings and his highest single-game pitch total was 56.

Raritan gave its rookie starter a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when third baseman Antonio Lamberti scored on a passed ball with one out. Lamberti led off the inning with a walk and after a single by Jobby Dekis, catcher Matt Melendez sacrificed both runners into scoring position.

Cinnaminson tied the game in the top of the third when second baseman Luke Rittler led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Anthony Alessandroni.

Raritan answered right back in the bottom of the inning, with Dekis and Will Meehan setting the table with a pair of singles and each advancing a base on a wild pitch. With two out, first baseman Jake Ricchuiti hit a one-hopper to shortstop, where the ball took an unusual hop one Pirates shortstop Noah Harvey. Harvey stopped the ball from going into the outfield to score both runs, but Ricchuiti made it to first base with an RBI single before being helped off the field with a leg injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game.

The top three hitters in Cinnaminson’s lineup went a combined 5-for-11 with a double, walk and a run scored against Evernham, but he held the rest of the Pirates to a combined 0-for-15 with a walk, sacrifice fly and two hit batters. Cinnaminson stranded two runners each in the first, fifth and seventh innings.

In the seventh, Harvey hit a one-out single and after Evernham recorded the second out on a fielder’s choice ground ball to second base, Logan Hammell ripped a single through the left side to move the tying run into scoring position. That brought up the clean-up hitter, Alessandroni, who fell behind, 1-2, but worked the count full by fouling off two two-strike pitches.

With the runners in motion on the 3-2 pitch, Evernham got Alessandroni to line a changeup to third, where Lamberti caught it just above the ground for the final out of the game.

(4) Shore 8, (5) Florence 7

Shore scored four runs with two out in the bottom of the seventh, capped by a game-winning, two-run single by Enzo Cagliostro that scored the winning run from first and the Blue Devils completed an improbable comeback to stun the Flashes and reach the sectional semifinals for the fourth straight season.

In last year’s Central Jersey Group I semifinal, Shore outlasted Florence, 1-0, in a 14-inning marathon to advance to the sectional final. This year’s installment played out much differently, but with the same team advancing. The Flashes jumped out to a 6-1 lead and led, 7-2, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to three home runs — solo shots by losing pitcher Adam Piotrowski and Josh Pagano, plus a three-run shot by Evan Saintz that made the score, 5-1, in the third.

Andrew Barham gave Shore life in the bottom of the sixth when he connected on a two-run home run that cut the Florence lead to 7-4 after Ryan Barham led off the inning with a single. Piotrowski took over on the mound for starter Hudson Zuno and escaped the inning without any further damage.

Luca Moccia worked a scoreless top of the seventh to complete his scoreless 1 2/3 innings of relief and set the stage for the dramatic finish in the bottom of the seventh. Liam Hennelly led off with a walk and after a pop-out for the first out, Piotrowski issued another walk to Andrew Barham and hit Braden Calandriello to load the bases.

Piotrowski picked up a huge out when he struck out Shore catcher Riley Smaltini — the team’s leader in extra-base hits. With one out from a revenge win and a return trip to the sectional semifinals, Piotrowski induced a ground ball to the left side of the infield off the bat of Rory Burkhardt. Third baseman Justin Marbach fielded the ball on the run, but his throw to second base was wide, allowing both Hennelly and Andrew Barham to score on the play, with Burkhardt and Calandriello holding and first and second, respectively.

Cagliostro stepped in and hit a blooper into shallow right field that tailed toward the rightfield line. Second baseman Blake Boss made a diving attempt at a game-ending catch, but the ball went off is glove and rolled into foul territory as three defenders converged on one another. With the runners off on contact, Calandriello scored easily and Burkhardt stormed home all the way from first base with the winning run.

After its dramatic comeback, Shore advances to face No. 1 Middlesex in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal. Middlesex eliminated Shore in both the 2022 and 2023 Central Group I semifinals — both of which were also played at Middlesex.

South Jersey Non-Public A

(1) CBA 2, (8) Paul VI 0

Dan Tsimbinos doubled during a scoring rally in the first and singled home a run in the third to carry the offense and battery-mate Danny DiTullio took care of the rest on the mound by firing a four-hit shutout in a Colts win over the Eagles.

Friday marked DiTullio’s first seven-inning complete game of the season and his nine strikeouts were a season high.

Jayden Matejicka singled and Tsimbinos doubled with one out in the first, followed by a sacrifice fly by Dan Russo to open the scoring. After that first inning, Paul VI junior starter and Charleston Southern commit Tyler Rodgers allowed just one hit, which was the RBI single by Tsimbinos that put CBA ahead, 2-0, in the third. Matejicka drew the lone walk of the game against Rodgers, stole second and scored on Tsimbinos’s two-out single into left.

After the Tsimbinos RBI single, Rodgers retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, with the lone base-runner coming on an error.

Paul VI did not push a runners past second base against DiTullio and both runners that reached second bases for the Eagles in the game did so with two out in the inning — once in the second and again in the fifth.

CBA will host No. 4 St. Joseph Metuchen Wednesday in the South Jersey Non-Public A semifinals.

(4) Ranney 11, (5) Holy Spirit 5

Ricky Lopez belted his 11th home run of the season for the first of three Ranney home runs and fellow sophomore Justin Kauffman shined on the mound and at the plate in leading the Panthers to a win over the Spartans that sends Ranney to Wednesday’s sectional semifinal round at No. 1 Gloucester Catholic.

Kauffman pitched into the fifth inning before running into trouble, which resulted in five unearned runs on his score line courtesy of a pair of Ranney errors in the inning. Kauffman singled in all four of his plate appearances as well and scored three runs.

Lopez launched a solo home run on a 2-2 curveball in the bottom of the first inning for his Shore-leading 11th long ball, staking Ranney to a 1-0 lead. Holy Spirit starter Brayden Birchler escaped a bases-loaded jam to end the first and put up a zero in the second before Ranney erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third to go up, 7-0.

Curt Chropuvka also had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI single that made it 2-0 in the third and another RBI single in the sixth that made it 10-5. Robbie Wrobel dropped a successful safety squeeze to push the lead to 3-0 and after a double-steal made it 4-0, Brody Garguilo singled home a run for a 5-0 Ranney lead.

Freshman Brayden Cox capped the six-run third with a two-run homer to left.

Brody Mauro answered Holy Spirit’s five-run inning with a solo home run to make it 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth.

(2) Bishop Eustace 2, (10) St. Rose 1

Tyler Hager broke up a no-hit bid by Georgetown commit Eamon McDermott with an RBI double in the top of the sixth, but the Purple Roses’ upset bid came up a run short, with the Crusaders advancing to the sectional semifinals to play No. 3 Doane Academy.

Junior right-hander and Pitt commit Peter Nolan kept St. Rose within striking distance by allowing two runs on just two hits while striking out eight over five innings of work.

McDermott, however, was even better. Coming off a 19-strikeout two-hitter on May 17 against Seneca, McDermott took his no-hit bid into the sixth inning, at which point St. Rose finally solved him. Dom Crudo led off with his second walk of the game, but McDermott responded by striking out the next two batters to pull within four outs of the no-hitter.

During the third batter of the inning, Crudo stole second base, which made it easier for him to score when Hager scalded an opposite-field double to right — breaking up the no-hit bid and cutting St. Rose’s deficit in half with on swing.

McDermott recovered to strike out his third batter of the inning, which ended his day at 105 pitches. Cole Williams took over in the seventh inning and picked up where McDermott left off, striking out the side in order to secure his fourth save of the season and send Bishop Eustace into the next round.

Opening Round

South Jersey Non-Public A

(10) Donovan Catholic 3, (7) Notre Dame 1

Steve Malato and Mike Santise each drove in a run during Donovan Catholic’s two-run second inning and Nick Lovacco pitched into the seventh inning before turning the ball over to Aiden Brescia, who nailed down a Griffins win over the Irish to send Donovan Catholic to Saturday’s sectional quarterfinal at No. 2 Red Bank Catholic.

Malato gave Donovan Catholic a 1-0 lead with an RBI single after Tyler Levine singled stole second and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Lucas Affa to get into prime scoring position. Connor Bragg also walked and stole second in the inning before going to third on the single by Malato and scoring on a ground out by Santise.

Levine collected an RBI in the top of the sixth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving Donovan Catholic a 3-1 cushion.

Notre Dame had a runner on base in every inning except the fourth and a runner in scoring position in every other inning but the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, the Irish led off with a single by Jamie Duffy, followed by a fly-out that marked Lovacco’s last batter due to a pitch-count that met the maximum number for a single game.

Brescia took over and put the tying run on base via walk, but he induced a pop-up to Malato at shortstop for the second out and a fly-out to Santise in centerfield to end the game.

Since starting the season 0-11, Donovan Catholic has won six of its last eight games, with the two losses coming to Delbarton and Toms River North.
