(9) Ocean 3, (8) Manasquan 2

Ben Robinson knocked in what proved to be the winning run with an RBI double in the top of the fifth and recorded the final three outs with Manasquan threatening in the ninth inning as the Spartans upended the Warriors to reach the SCT quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 1 CBA.

Will Walsh and Robinson laced back-to-back doubles in the top of the fifth, with Walsh scoring on Robinson’s double to stretch Ocean’s lead to 3-0. The Spartans plated two in the top of the second thanks to two Manasquan errors, the first of which came on an error in the outfield on a single by Hayden Ansell.

Tommy Kowaliwskyj took a shutout into the sixth inning for Ocean before Manasquan broke through with an RBI double by shortstop Tristan Condon. Kowaliwskyj also started the bottom of the seventh and walked Aiden Opatosky to leadoff the inning. Robinson then took over and struck out the first batter he face before catcher Connor Voelksen touched him up for an RBI double that scored Opatosky to cut the deficit to 3-2 with one out.

With the tying run in scoring position, Robinson reached back for a strikeout for out No. 2 and ended the game by inducing a ground out to third baseman Jack Kelly.

(1) CBA 2, (17) Toms River South 0

Dylan Iwanyk pitched his second complete game in as many starts, this time firing a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to pitch the Colts past the Indians and into the SCT quarterfinals Wednesday against No. 9 Ocean.

Iwanyk surrendered a leadoff single to mound counterpart Christian Mascaro leading off the top of the fourth inning and the only other base-runners he allowed came on his lone walk and three hit batters. Two of those hit batters came after Mascaro’s single and loaded the bases with two out, but Iwanyk struck out the final batter of the frame to keep Toms River South off the board.

Iwanyk hit his groove in the top of the fifth, when he struck out the side in order on 11 pitches.

CBA played small ball to scratch its first run across against Mascaro in the bottom of the second. Dan Russo led off with a single into left-centerfield and Mascaro hit Ryan Wetmore with a pitch on a 1-2 offering. Jared Matejicka sacrificed both runners up one base and Justin Fuerbacher hit a slow ground ball to third that scored Russo with the game’s first run.

Catcher Dan Tsimbinos added another run to CBA’s total with an RBI single in the bottom of the third that scored Jayden Matejicka, who singled with one out, stole second base, and advanced to third on a ground out to second base by Will Fahey.

(5) Colts Neck 8, (21) Central 7

Leftfielder Miles Schneider threw out the potential tying run at home plate to end the game and the Cougars advanced past the Golden Eagles and into the SCT quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 4 Brick Memorial.

Trailing by three runs heading into the seventh inning, Central got its rally started with a leadoff double by shortstop Tommy Truzzolino. After Jack Dugo notched a strikeout, Ryan Brescia drew a one-out walk and Nick Dinicola singled home Truzzolino to cut the Colts Neck lead to 8-6 while also advancing Brescia to third base.

Rob Bollentino followed with a ground ball to second baseman Dan Annunziata, who fired to first base for the out, but that was the only out Colts Neck could register on the play. Brescia scored the seventh Central run and pinch-runner Jacob Halpin reached second as the potential tying run.

Gavin Srinivasan then hammered a single into leftfield, which Schneider fielded cleanly. Schneider then unleashed an all-or-nothing throw in the air to home plate. Catcher John Glusko made a leaping grab of Schneider’s throw, came down just ahead of Halpin’s slide and applied the tag to end the game.

Colts Neck scored two critical insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, which started with the second of two triples by Annunziata. The Cougars then stretched their lead to 7-5 on a bunt by R.J. Conover that plated Annunziata, with Conover reaching on a throwing error. With two out, Ryan Rude lined a single into left for his third hit and second RBI of the game, chasing Conover home for an 8-5 lead.

Rude also hit a tie-breaking RBI single to give Colts Neck a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Central posted four runs in the top of the inning to tie the game, 5-5. Brayden Cimorelli hit a two-run single to cut Central’s deficit in half, 5-3, and a two-out error scored the tying runs.

Bollentino gave Central a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning before Colts Neck scored five unanswered runs, starting with a game-tying RBI single by Dugo. Annunziata broke the tie with a two-run triple in the bottom of the second and Ronan Kiely made it 5-1 with a two-out, two-run single later in the inning.

(6) Ranney 10, (11) Point Beach 6

The Panthers blasted six of the eight home runs hit in Monday’s round-of-16 game in Tinton Falls, including back-to-back-to-back solo homers by the first three batters in their order in the bottom of the sixth to pull away with a win over the Garnet Gulls in a battle to two former Class B Central rivals.

Brody Mauro and Ricky Lopez each hit two homers, including the first two of the three consecutive homers in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Parisi made it three in a row with a solo bomb that gave Ranney a 10-5 lead.

Mauro’s first home run broke a 5-5 tie with one out in the bottom of the fourth, giving Ranney a 6-5 lead. The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the fifth, when Curt Chropuvka and Nate Fuller led off with back-to-back singles and advanced on a sacrifice by Robbie Wrobel. Chropuvka then came home on an RBI ground out by catcher Brody Garguilo.

Point Beach held two different leads in the game thanks to junior catcher Dan Lubach. The Garnet Gulls broke the ice when Tommy Conroy scored on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single by Lubach to give Point Beach a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Ranney tied the game in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by starting pitcher Justin Kauffman.

In the top of the third, Brody Powers and Noah Banick drew consecutive walks to lead off and Lubach crushed an opposite-field three-run home run to right for a 5-2 Garnet Gulls lead.

Ranney went right back to work in tying the game in the bottom of the third, starting with the first of two home runs by Ricky Lopez. The two solo home runs by Lopez on Monday increased his Shore-Conference-leading home-run total to nine. Fuller made it 5-4 with an RBI double and a two-out error pushed across the run that tied the game, 5-5, in the third.

Chris Napolitano led off the top of the seventh with the eighth home run of the game, but Zach Messina set down the next three batters in order to finish off the Ranney win, which sets up an SCT quarterfinal date with Red Bank Catholic Wednesday at Count Basie Park. Ranney and Red Bank Catholic split their regular-season series in Shore Conference Class A North divisional play, with Ranney winning the game at Count Basie, 4-2.

(7) Jackson Memorial 13, (23) Freehold Twp. 3 (6 Innings)

Tyler Huzzy, Jack Osmond and Brady Wendell delivered consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits in a four-run fourth inning and Frank Noviello ended the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Jaguars a 10-run win over the Patriots to advance to the SCT round of 16 Wednesday at No. 2 Toms River East.

Jackson Memorial tied the game, 3-3, in the fourth on a ground ball by Noviello that turned into an error and scored Aiden Alu from third. Huzzy lined an RBI single into left to score Noviello and Osmond followed with an RBI double to chase home courtesy runner Aiden Cruz after Cruz stole second base. Wendell capped the rally by punching a single through the right side to chase home Osmond and give Jackson Memorial a 6-3 lead.

A sacrifice fly by Osmond and an error got the scoring started in Jackson Memorial’s seven-run fifth. Freshman Mike Fogarty then knocked in a pair with a two-run single for a 10-3 lead and Noviello followed with his first home run — a three-run shot over the rightfield fence.

Wendell opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 Jaguars lead, but Freehold Township chipped away and took the lead by the top of the fourth. Julian Polo got the Patriots on the board with an RBI single in the top of the second and Ed Gudaitis tied it, 2-2, with an RBI single with two out in the top of the third. In the fourth, Matt Nuccio led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch with two out to give Freehold Township a 3-2 lead.

(2) Toms River East 3, (15) Rumson-Fair Haven 1

Toms River East answered an RBI single by Rumson senior D.J. Ylagan in the top of the first with three runs in the bottom of the inning and right-hander Dan Nafziger shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the way to pitch the Raiders to the SCT quarterfinals Wednesday against No. 7 Jackson Memorial.

Matt Ferrara tied the game with an RBI single in the first and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch ahead of an RBI single by Mike Vaccarino that put Toms River East ahead, 3-1.

Rumson sophomore left-hander Cooper Jones bounced back to pitch scoreless frames in the second, third and fourth innings before surrendering a leadoff single to Jax Buatez leading off the fifth and turning the ball over to Owen O’Toole following a sacrifice bunt. O’Toole kept the Rumson deficit at two runs by stranding the runner and pitching a clean sixth inning. After allowing seven earned runs in his last two starts on the mound, O’Toole has pitched 10.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

Making his first start since winning the Ocean County Tournament final vs. Brick Memorial, Nafziger got beat with a double by Parker Shenman and a two-out RBI single by Ylagan to fall behind, 1-0. The senior right-hander then retired the next nine batters he faced and after Casper Billington broke up that run with a two-out double in the fourth, Nafziger set down the next 10 batters he faced to end the game.

Toms River East avenged a walk-off, 7-6 loss to Rumson-Fair Haven on Thursday of last week and will now seek to win the season-long rubber match vs. Jackson Memorial after the two Class A South division foes split the regular-season series, 1-1.
