Shore Conference Tournament

Quarterfinals

(4) Brick Memorial 5, (5) Colts Neck 0

Brody Moore and Brayden Nalducci combined on a two-hit shutout and each delivered a run-scoring hit during Brick Memorial’s four-run fifth inning, leading the Mustangs past the Cougars and into the SCT semifinals Monday at top-seeded CBA.

Colts Neck put a runner on base against Moore in each of the first five innings and advanced a runner into scoring position in all of those innings except the top of the second. Moore, however, worked out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in the first with back-to-back strikeouts and did not allow a runner to advance to scoring position with fewer than two out in the inning the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mike Figner broke up the shutout with an RBI double to the fence in left-centerfield. Colts Neck limited Figner to one RBI with a relay from centerfielder R.J. Conover to shortstop Will Perski and onto catcher John Glusko that cut down courtesy runner Matt McGlynn attempting to score from first on the play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brick Memorial provided some breathing room for Moore, but not without controversy. Nalducci stepped in to bat with the bases loaded and one out and took what the home-plate umpire appeared to signal was strike one. Nalducci then hit a foul ball to the left of third base and took a called strike that the Colts Neck dugout believed to be strike three. The plate umpire, however, signaled a 1-2 count, which drew a verbal response from the Colts Neck dugout. After a conference between the two umpires, the count remained 1-2 and on the next pitch, Nalducci ripped a single into left field to plate two runners and extend the Brick Memorial lead to 3-0.

Nalducci said after the game that he asked the umpire after the first pitch of the at-bat: “That was low, right?” According to Nalducci, the umpire responded: “Yeah, 1-0.”

Brick Memorial tacked on two more runs in the fifth in RBI singles by Jimi Popp and Moore, with Colts Neck rightfielder Ronan Kiely throwing out another runner at the plate to keep a sixth run off the board.

Moore recorded the first two outs of the top of the sixth and turned the ball over to Nalducci with his pitch count at an even 90 — the maximum number of pitches allowed for a pitcher to pitch with three days of rest between games. By pulling Moore at 90 pitches, Brick Memorial coach Evan Rizzitello will have Moore available for a maximum of 60 pitches should Brick Memorial make it to Wednesday’s Shore Conference Tournament final.

Nalducci recorded the final four outs on 24 pitches, which keeps him eligible for a full 110 for Monday’s game vs. CBA. Nalducci allowed one run in four innings against CBA on opening day, March 31. The Colts scored eight runs in the final three innings to win, 9-4.

(7) Jackson Memorial 5, (2) Toms River East 4

Matt Colaneri pitched his second complete-game at Toms River East to beat the Raiders for a second time this season, this time sending the Jaguars to the SCT semifinals Monday at Red Bank Catholic.

Jackson Memorial tied the game on an RBI single by Aidan Alu in the top of the fifth inning, set up by a two-out double by Dan Jorgensen that put runners on second and third.

The Jaguars regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth when centerfielder and No. 9 hitter Frank Noviello swatted a triple into the leftfield corner to lead off the inning and scored when Charlie Buchinsky ripped an RBI single through a drawn-in infield one batter later, making it 5-4 in favor of Jackson Memorial.

The host Raiders sent the top three hitters in their order to the plate to start the bottom of the seventh and Colaneri retired both — the first on a pop-out and the second on a ground ball to Brady Wendell at third base. Matt Ferrara extended the game for Toms River East with a pop-fly double that dropped just out of the reach of shortstop Jackson Osmond, who could not make the sliding grab after a dead sprint.

Jackson Memorial opted to intentionally walk clean-up hitter Dan Nafziger and Colaneri paid off the decision by inducing a game-ending fly ball to rightfield.

Toms River East grabbed the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run to left by Joe DiMeo — the first home run in the varsity career of the sophomore third baseman and 2024 All-Shore selection as a freshman.

Jackson Memorial took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth and threatened to score more before Liam Scallon worked his way out of trouble. Jorgensen led off the fourth with a walk and moved up a base on a single by Alu. Freshman Mike Fogarty dropped down a bunt and reached on a throwing error that allowed Jorgensen to score with the go-ahead run. Scallon then rolled up two ground balls — one to Ferrara at shortstop and the other to DiMeo at third — for the first two outs, with neither scoring the run from third. The senior right-hander then ended the threat with a strikeout to keep the deficit at 3-2 and set the stage for DiMeo’s go-ahead homer in the bottom of the inning.

The two teams traded RBI singles in the first inning, with Wendell giving Jackson Memorial a 1-0 lead with his RBI knock and Ferrara answering with one of his own in the bottom. Jackson Memorial took a 2-1 lead on a run-scoring balk with two out in the top of the third, but Raiders catcher Gavin Toth got the run back with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
