Catcher Aiden Funk came through with run-scoring hits in all three of his plate appearances and guided Ryan Prior and Glen Popes through a combined one-hitter as the Caseys handled the Griffins to earn a sectional semifinal home game vs. reigning Non-Public A champion St. Augustine on Wednesday.
Funk opened the scoring with an RBI double to deep centerfield and fellow junior Jake Frankel followed with an RBI single to grab a 2-0 lead for RBC in the bottom of the first.
Donovan Catholic scored its only run on its only hit off Prior in the top of the second, with Aiden Brescia drawing a leadoff walk and scoring on a two-out RBI single to rightfield by shortstop Steve Malato.
The Caseys then closed the game with nine unanswered runs, beginning with a two-out, two-run single by Funk to give RBC a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Luke Scaturro lined a two-run single into centerfield and shortstop Max Dantoni lifted a sacrifice fly to rightfield for a 7-1 lead through three innings.
RBC put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a pair of run-scoring doubles. Funk slammed another RBI double off the top-half of the fence in centerfield to make it 8-0 and after a bases-loaded walk by A.J. Sciametta made it 9-0, junior third baseman Drew Cannon dropped a bloop double down the rightfield line to score two more and give RBC an 11-1 lead.
Prior turned the ball over the Popes with his pitch count at 57, which allows him to throw up to 93 pitches on Wednesday against St. Augustine. Popes fired a one-two-three fifth inning with a pair of strikeouts to wrap up the game in five innings.
