Poly Prep (N.Y.) 1, No. 5 Ranney 0

Both starting pitchers took a shutout into the seventh inning in Brooklyn Saturday and after Duke commit Justice de Jong finished seven scoreless innings, his Poly Prep lineup supplied the game’s lone run in the bottom of the seventh to give him and the Blue Devils the walk-off win over the Panthers.

Justin Kauffman silenced Poly Prep through six innings, but hit the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh and, after a sacrifice bunt, surrendered the game-winning RBI single to Lachan Rudd with one out.

Ranney’s only scoring opportunity against de Jong came in the top of the first inning, when shortstop Ricky Lopez singled with one out and stole second base. De Jong recorded a strikeout and after Lopez swiped third base as well, de Jong coaxed an inning-ending fly out. De Jong did not allow a baserunner to reach second base the rest of the way.

Jackson Memorial 3, Millburn 2 (8 Innings)

Angel Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Jaguars walked off with an extra-inning win over the Millers.

Jackson Memorial struck first on an RBI single by Anthony Milone in the bottom of the third inning and extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring error. Millburn tied the game in the top of the sixth, starting with an RBI double by Greg Rosenthal, followed by a game-tying sacrifice fly by Quinn Conn.

Aidan Alu led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, followed by a walk to shortstop Jackson Osmond. Brady Wendell then dropped a sacrifice bunt and all three runners we safe on a fielding error, loading the bases with one out. Joey Decaro — who doubled earlier in the game — hit into a fielder’s choice ground out to keep Millburn in the game, but Cruz to a 3-2 pitch out of the zone to force home the winning run.

Jackson Memorial’s eight-inning run made a winner of sophomore Caden Calcaterra, who took home his first win on the mound as a varsity pitcher after slinging 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
