Shore Conference Tournament

Quarterfinals

(1) CBA 6, (9) Ocean 3

Junior left-hander Sean Loggie took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and senior right-hander Shane Langan retired all nine batters he faced — including seven with strikeouts — as the Colts overcame a rocky fifth inning to shut down the Spartans and reach the SCT semifinals for the third straight year.

CBA posted all the scoring it would need in the first inning, starting with a two-run double by catcher Dan Tsimbinos that broke the ice. Two more runs came around in the first on two Ocean errors and the Colts added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Colin Hoverter that stretched CBA’s lead to 5-0.

After Loggie held Ocean hitless through four innings, the Spartans fought their way back to within 5-3 behind a busy fifth inning. Hayden Ansell drew a leadoff walk and Tommy Kowaliwskyj broke up the no-hit bid with a double, followed by an RBI infield single by Derek Vazquez to make it 5-1. Ocean added two more runs on an error and a wild pitch to pull within two, but Langan shut down the rally with three straight strikeouts with a runner on third base.

CBA will play the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal game between No. 4 Brick Memorial and No. 5 Colts Neck Saturday, 3 p.m. at Al Leiter Ballpark on the campus of Central Regional.

(3) Red Bank Catholic 12, (6) Ranney 2 (5 Innings)

Catcher Aiden Funk cracked an RBI double in the bottom of the first and blew the game open with a three-run triple that capped a six-run third inning as the Caseys cruised to a win over the Panthers that propels them into the SCT semifinals for the sixth straight tournament.

RBC worked nine walks to help set the table for four scoring rallies in five innings, including four runs in the fifth to end the game via 10-run rule. Both Max Dantoni and Charlie Stumberger draw bases-loaded walks and Drew Cannon and Luke Scaturro hit back-to-back sacrifice flies that made it 4-0 in the third. Dylan Passo then walked, Dantoni was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Stumberger took ball four on a 3-2 pitch to force in the fifth Caseys run.

Ranney then turned to senior Zach Messina in relief and Funk greeted him with a line drive down the rightfield line that cleared the bases for an RBI triple and an 8-0 Caseys lead.

Sophomore shortstop Ricky Lopez got Ranney on the board with his Shore-Conference-leading 10th home run of the season — a two-run shot to leftfield that made it 8-2 in the top of the eighth.

Jake Frankel slammed a two-run double off the left-centerfield fence to make it 10-2, RBC, in the bottom of the fifth and Luke Lonczak followed with an RBI triple into the rightfield corner with two out. A.J. Sciametta then ended the game by flipping an RBI single into left to plate Lonczak.

Senior right-hander Luke Meyers improved to 6-0 with 4 1/3 innings of work, which included Meyers striking out the side around a walk in the top of the fifth inning just before RBC exploded for six runs and an 8-0 lead. His outing ended ay 87 pitches, which keeps Meyers eligible to pitch in Monday’s SCT championship game should the Caseys win their semifinal at 11 a.m. at Central Regional. The Caseys will face the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal game between No. 2 Toms River East and No. 7 Jackson Memorial.

Monmouth County Tournament

Ted Jarmusz Bracket

Semifinals

(7) Middletown South 9, (9) Wall 7

Rob Chiusano and Jack Buono sparked a two-run fifth inning for Middletown South that pushed the Eagles in front after squandering a 5-1 lead and Dan Daley closed out his fourth save to send the Eagles past the Crimson Knights and into the Jarmusz Bracket championship game vs. Monmouth Regional next week.

With his team trailing, 6-5, Chiusano led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and Buono followed with a single to park runners on first and second for Middletown South. Wall freshman Luke Dana bounced back by inducing a flyout and notching a strikeout for the first two outs without either runner advanding a base. Vinny Alcure then worked a two-out walk after a double-steal by Chiusano and Buono and Mike Frandsen beat on a two-out, RBI infield single to tie the game, 6-6. Buono then scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles the lead.

Middletown South added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Jack Dougherty and Lucas Grigos to make it 9-6.

Will Hague and Austin Harr each delivered two-run singles in the top of the fifth to turn a 5-1 deficit for Wall into a 5-5 tie and John Catanio capped the five-run rally with a tie-breaking RBI double.

Shore 7, Manchester 5 (11 Innings)

Enzo Cogliostro broke a 5-5 tie with an RBI single in the top of the 11th inning and Josh Moeller tacked on an insurance run with an RBI double as the Blue Devils made a winner out of Luca Delonardo after the sophomore right-hander pitched seven shutout innings of relief.

After Shore finally broke a run of five straight scoreless innings by the two teams, Delonardo pitched a one-two-three bottom of the 11th to finish off the win.

Shore rallied from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game with four runs in the top of the fifth. Starting pitcher Andrew Barham hit an RBI double that cut Manchester’s lead to 5-3 and catcher Riley Smaltini tied the game with a two-out RBI single.

Point Boro 4, Freehold Boro 3 (8 Innings)

Jake Clayton hit a game-tying RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Panthers won it on an error with one out in the bottom of the eighth to pull off a come-from-behind win over the Colonials.

Hudson Griffin drew a two-out walk in the seventh to keep Point Boro alive and Nick Carmino followed with a single to rightfield. Griffin raced to third base and scored on a throwing error on the attempt to catch him at third, with Carmino moving to second base. Clayton then yanked a single through the left side to bring home Carmino with the tying run.

The last two of Freehold Boro’s five errors led to Point Boro’s winning run. Winning pitcher Aidan Dombrowsky reached on an error to leadoff the bottom of the eighth inning and gave way to pinch-runner James Lockwood. Noah Ochojski struck out the next two batters and James Bradley kept the rally alive with a line-drive single to centerfield that pushed Lockwood up to third base after he stole second.

Griffin then stepped back in the box and for the second time in as many innings, Freehold Boro could not cleanly field a ball hit by the Panthers senior, this time allowing Lockwood to score with the winning run.
