Sectional Quarterfinals
Central Jersey Group 4
(2) Old Bridge 1, (10) Manalapan 0
Akhil Penkala and Jason Cota hit back-to-back doubles with two out in the bottom of the fourth to account for the only run of the game and Justin Hascup finished off an 11-strikeout, five-hit shutout to pitch the Knights past the Braves and into the sectional semifinal Tuesday against No. 3 Edison.
Dylan Kane worked out of trouble in each of the first two innings and appeared to be cruising through the fourth inning before Penkala doubled into left and Cota — the No. 8 hitter — lined an RBI double into right.
In the bottom of the first, Kane walked the leadoff man before Chris Crosta singled to put two on right away. A ground out moved the runners up to second and third and John Smith hit a line drive to centerfielder Dennis Healy, but Healy caught it shallow enough to hold the runners. Kane then induced one more fly ball to Healy for the third out.
Old Bridge’s third-inning threat was the result of faulty defense, with the Braves allowing two base-runners to reach on errors with one out. Kane picked up his defense by inducing a pop-out for the second out and finishing off the inning with a strikeout.
Manalapan stranded runners in scoring position in four different innings, including with less than two out in each of the first two innings. Anthony Foti led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a fly out rightfield, but Hascup stranded him there with back-to-back strikeouts. In the top of the second, Healy and James Vitucci drew back-to-back one-out walks and Vincent Matteis ripped a ball on a line, but shortstop Dom Botte caught it in the air and doubled off Healy at second base.

North Jersey Section 2, Group 3
(1) Colonia 5, (8) Middletown North 0
Monmouth commit Cory Pascarella pitched a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and the Patriots’ lineup broke out with three triples and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to carry Colonia to a quarterfinal win over the Lions.
Thursday marked the second straight outing with 16 strikeouts for Pascarella, who fanned 16 in 7 2/3 innings against Scotch Plains-Fanwood in taking a no-decision in a 1-0, extra-inning win for the Patriots.
Against Middletown North, Pascarella walked the leadoff batter in three of his seven innings, but overpowered his way to scoreless frames by striking out the side in each of those innings.
The last of those was in the top of the seventh, when Middletown North nearly worked Pascarella beyond the single-game 110-pitch limit. Zach Hampton worked a six-pitch walk to lead off the inning and Alipio Figueroa fouled off four two-strike pitches to earn a 10-pitch at-bat. On the 10th pitch of the plate appearance, Pascarella fired a fastball past the swing of Figueroa for the first out, but at 105 pitches, finishing the game was no sure thing.
Pascarella got back on track with a three-pitch strikeout for the second out of the inning, leaving him a chance to face one more batter. Once again, he blew away the competition, striking out the last man he faced on three pitches to complete a career-best performance.
Colonia scored its first run thanks to a leadoff walk and an error in the top of the second inning — the only two mistakes by junior right-hander Seamus McCabe in his four innings of work. After Shortstop Matt Fasulo led off the second with a walk, an errant pickoff attempt allowed him to motor all the way to third base with none out. Jayce Rodriguez then squared up a fly ball to leftfield for a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead.
Pascarella’s pitch-count drama in the seventh inning might have come with a lot more pressure had it not been for a breakthrough fifth inning by the Colonia lineup. Figueroa replaced McCabe on the mound after McCabe allowed just one unearned run on two hits and 50 pitches, with coach Ryan McCabe (Seamus’s uncle) going to his shutdown senior reliever for the back-end of the game.
Jake Gotti greeted Figueroa with an opposite-field triple to rightfield to lead off the fifth. Figueroa responded with a strikeout for the first out, but catcher Jake Harvatt swatted a line drive up the left-centerfield ally that rolled all the way to the fence for an RBI triple and a 2-0 Colonia lead.
No. 9 hitter Joe Massimino made it three triples in the inning when he tomahawked another deep drive into right field for an RBI triple and a 3-0 Patriots lead. After a walk and a stolen base by Pascarella, Dylan Chiera capped the scoring with a two-run single into centerfield off new pitcher Louis Romeo to cap the scoring.

Central Jersey Group 3
(1) Northern Burlington 9, (8) Brick 8
Logan Downey, Jaden Freeze and Nick Dromboski hit consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the seventh and the Greyhounds completed a stunning comeback to deny the Green Dragons a quarterfinal upset.
Brick stormed out to a 7-0 lead behind a six-run fourth inning, which started with a solo home run by Zach Martin with two out in the inning. The Green Dragons then loaded the bases with an error, a line-drive single off pitcher Cole Marchetti by Chris Quick and a walk by Brayden Heatter. Catcher James Donoghue then delivered a two-run single to rightfield for a 4-0 Brick lead.
Sean Savannah appeared to break the game wide open with a three-run blast to centerfield to stake Brick to a 7-0 lead.
Northern Burlington’s potent lineup immediately answered in the bottom of the fourth. The Greyhounds loaded the bases with none out and broke up the shutout by Brick right-hander Peyton Horning with an RBI infield single. Brent Walulak then walked to force in the second run of the inning, but Horning responded by inducing a ground ball to third base, where Brannon McBride made the stop, tagged third base and threw across the diamond for the double-play.
A run scored on the double-play, but Horning was just one out from escaping the fourth inning with a four-run lead. No. 9 hitter Jaden Freeze spoiled those plans with a two-out, two-run home run to left, cutting Brick’s lead to 7-5 and swinging the momentum back in Northern Burlington’s favor.
Jimmy Musser took over on the mound for Northern Burlington and pitched a one-two-three fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Luca Mannino crushed his eighth homer of the season to lead off the frame, pulling the No. 1 seed within 7-6 with its sixth unanswered run.
Horning worked out of the bottom of the fifth with his team still in the lead and Brick tacked on a crucial insurance run in the top of the sixth to finally halt the scoring run by Northern Burlington. Musser walked the bases loaded with two out and Heatter came home on a wild pitch for an 8-6 Brick lead.
Brannon McBride took over on the mound for Horning and Northern Burlington immediately turned on the pressure with a double by Downey to lead off the inning and Freeze reaching first on a third-strike wild pitch. Downey, however, remained at second base and McBride induced a pair of fly-outs to centerfielder Matt Goodfellow that did not advance the runners. McBride then coaxed one more pop-up on the infield, which Heatter squeeze near shortstop for the final out of the inning.
After Musser kept Brick off the board in the top of the seventh, Liam Velit woke up the Northern Burlington dugout with a solo blast to leftfield to lead off the inning and cut Brick’s lead to 8-7 with the Greyhounds’ third home run of the game. After McBride recorded the first out on a line drive to leftfield, Nick Filipponi lined a double into right to put the tying run on second base.
McBride bounced back with a strikeout to move within one out of securing the upset for the Green Dragons, but would have to go through Downey, who doubled to start the prior inning. Downey delivered a line drive into centerfield, chasing Filipponi home from second with the tying run.
Freeze notched his second hit of the day by dropping a single into centerfield and when Brick unsuccessfully attempted to throw out Downey at third base, Freeze pushed up to second to eliminate the force play as the winning run moved to third base. That brought up Dromboski — the Greyhounds’ leadoff hitter and extra-base hit leader (12 doubles, six home runs) — and the senior came through with a line drive into rightfield that completed the comeback from down, 7-0, in the fourth inning and 8-6 in the seventh.
Northern Burlington will host No. 4 Lawrence Tuesday in the sectional semifinal round.

(6) Middletown South 4, (3) Burlington Twp. 0
Catcher Lucas Grigos launched a two-run home run to open the scoring in the top of the third inning, then guided three Middletown South pitchers through a three-hit shutout that sent the Eagles past the Falcons and into the sectional semifinals Tuesday against the winner of Friday’s game between No. 10 Steinert and No. 2 Brick Memorial.
Middletown South added a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch in the top of the fifth and senior left-hander Michael Zena finished off 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn his second win of the tournament before turning the seventh inning over to senior Dan Daley.

(5) Toms River South 2, (4) Clearview 1
Sophomore Aiden Moylan came up one out shy of a one-hit shutout, settling for 6 2/3 innings and a win on the mound as the Indians (17-9) held off the Pioneers (17-10) on the road to reach the sectional semifinal round for the first time since 2017.
Toms River South gave its sophomore left-hander all the offense he would need before he threw his first pitch. Jaden Geremia led off the game with a triple and scored on a double by Christian Mascaro. Evan Schmidt then singled home Mascaro to give Toms River South a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Clearview hit back with an unearned run against Moylan in the bottom of the inning, but the southpaw did not blink the rest of the way. Moylan allowed just one hit — on an infield single — and three walks while striking out six, which included striking out the first two batters of the bottom of the seventh inning.
With Moylan at 112 pitches, Mascaro came on to record the final out, which first baseman Brett Rankin plucked out of the air for a game-ending line-out.
Toms River South will play the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between No. 9 Ocean City and No. 1 Mainland in the semifinal round on Tuesday.
Central Jersey Group 2
(2) Robbinsville 3, (7) Manasquan 2
Matt Antonucci and Dylan Vowteras hit back-to-back doubles in the first inning and Manasquan regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Tristan Condon, but the Ravens chipped away and beat the Warriors behind an complete-game effort by Josh Yoo.
Nick Wysokowski tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning and Robbinsville took its first lead in the fifth, when Noah Schwartz led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Pitt commit Tyler Bunnell.
Yoo made the lead stand up by retiring 11 straight from the middle of the fourth inning until two out in the top of the seventh, when a dropped pop up kept Manasquan’s season alive. Yoo then finished off the 85-pitch complete game with a ground-ball out. Yoo’s outing blew past his previous season-high of 4 1/3 innings.
Robbinsville will host No. 14 Bordentown Tuesday in the sectional semifinal round.

(8) Paul VI 2, (9) St. John Vianney 1
Mike Fanelli’s one-out double in the bottom of the fifth inning brought in both Paul VI runs and Anthony Ungaro and Christian Williams combined on a five-hit complete game to send the Eagles past the Lancers and into a sectional quarterfinal showdown with No. 1 CBA on Friday.
The second run on Fanelli’s double scored on an error, as did St. John Vianney’s lone run in the top of the sixth that cut its deficit in half. Mike McCormack was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and singles by C.J. Simone and J.J. McGonigle loaded the bases with one out. Wyatt Lewis hit a hard ground ball that Paul VI could not field cleanly and each runner moved up a base to make it 2-1 and keep the bases loaded with one out.
Williams — who took over after Simone’s single put runners on first and second with none out — struck out the next two batters to shut down the threat, then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to close out the victory.
