NJSIAA Tournament
Central Jersey Group 4
(10) Manalapan 2, (7) Monroe 0
Vincent Matteis drove in the only two runs of the game with a two-run single in the second and Leo Vitale made the lead stand up with a two-hit shutout, sending the Braves into the sectional quarterfinals with a road win over the Falcons.
Cristian Ptasienski led off the second with a line-drive single into centerfield and Dennis Healy dropped down a bunt base hit that turned into runners on second and third with none out for Manalapan thanks to a throwing error on the play. Monroe starter Ben Faigin came through with a strike out for the first out, but Matteis jumped on 1-0 pitch and swatted it into centerfield to chase home both runners.
Monroe threatened in both the fifth and seventh innings against Vitale. In the bottom of the fifth, Vitale hit the first two batters of the inning, but then induced a double-play ball to shortstop Anthony Voti to wipe out one of the runners and set up the senior right-hander to get out of trouble. Vitale then hit his spot for an inning-ending strikeout to strand the runner at third.
In the seventh, Manalapan gave Monroe hope with an error on a ground ball to lead off the inning. Vitale responded with a strikeout and coaxed a fly out rightfield for the first two outs with Faigin still stuck on first base. Braeden Hoiberg then lined a double to rightfield to move the tying runs into scoring position with two out, but Vitale struck out the next batter on three pitches to end the game.

(1) Governor Livingston 7, (16) Point Boro 6
Stetson commit and Governor Livingston starting pitcher Matty Diskin singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Highlanders rallied from down, 5-1, in the bottom of the fifth to avoid a monumental upset at the hands of the 16th-seeded Panthers.
Point Boro jumped on Diskin for three runs in the top of the first inning and after Governor Livingston knocked a run off the deficit in the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers came right back with two in the top of the fifth for a 5-1 lead.
At that point, the No. 1 ranked team in the state flexed its muscle. Reid Bazydlo led off with a double and University of Virginia commit and junior shortstop Zach Geertsma cranked a two-run home run to cut the Point Boro lead to 5-3. After a one-out walk and a fly-out for the second out, Ryan Pappas connected on a game-tying two-run home run to leftfield.
Junior Keither Mann posted a zero on the mound in the top half of the sixth inning and Bazydlo — the No. 9 hitter in Governor Livingston’s lineup — launched a two-out, tie-breaking solo home run to give Governor Livingston its first lead at 6-5.
Point Boro, however, would not go quietly. Junior Nick Carmino stunned the Highlanders by drilling a game-tying solo home run to leftfield, tying the game, 6-6. The clutch home runs were each the first in the careers of both Bazydlo and Carmino.
Mann composed himself and retired the next three Point Boro batters and in the bottom of the seventh, the Highlanders would not be denied. A pair of walks book-ended a single by Anthony DeNora to load the bases with none out, but sophomore left-hander Landon Hoyle recorded a crucial first out with a strikeout.
Diskin, however, stepped in and after taking a strike, ripped a single into leftfield to score Mike Basile with the winning run.
Point Boro opened the game by taking advantage of control issues for Diskin, who walked the first three batters he faced before picking up a strikeout. Aidan Dombroski knocked in Point Boro’s first run with an RBI ground out that preserved the threat with runners on second and third and James Bradley delivered a two-out, two-run single through the middle to chase home both Jake Clayton and Lou DiBiase.
The Panthers blinked in the bottom of the fourth by allowing Governor Livingston’s first run to score on a two-out error, but the offense picked up the defense in the top of the fifth. Carmino beat out an infield single to lead off and after a walk by Clayton, DiBiase roped an RBI double into left to score Carmino with the Panthers’ fourth run. Dombrowski then made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly to score Clayton.
Tuesday marked the second straight year in which Governor Livingston squeaked by a Shore Conference team in a 1-vs.-16 first-round game in the Central Group II Tournament. In 2024, the top-seeded Highlighers edged No. 16 Holmdel, 7-6, and went on to win the overall Group II championship. In 2023, No. 15 Manasquan upset No. 2 Governor Livingston in the opening round. The Highlighers’ last four NJSIAA Tournament losses have come to Shore Conference teams.
Point Boro nearly pulled the upset in the year around New Jersey, which would have been made all-the-more remarkable by the fact the Panthers needed an improbable confluence of events within the span of a week just to qualify for the NJSIAA Tournament.

(5) Raritan 4, (12) Spotswood 1
Jimmy Nichols was a sparkplug from the No. 9 spot in the batting order and senior Alan Warren outdueled Seton Hall commit Carter Cumiskey on the mound as the Rockets topped the Chargers to advance to the sectional quarterfinal Thursday at home against No. 13 Cinnaminson.
Nichols collected a pair of hits and stole a base, with his biggest contribution coming in the bottom of the fourth. Raritan broke open the scoring with an RBI infield single by Sean Burnett and Nichols followed with a double that drove in two for a 3-0 Raritan lead after Spotswood prevented a third run from scoring on the double by throwing Burnett out at home.
The Rockets still added a fourth run in the inning on a two-out RB single Jobby Dekis.
Spotswood mounted its biggest threat against Warren in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with none out on a hit-by-pitch, followed by consecutive singles. Warren dug in and induced a double play that Burnett and shortstop Travis Evernham turned up the middle for the first two outs of the inning while a run scored. Warren walked a runner to allow the tying run to come to the plate, but he shut down the threat by rolling up another grounder that Burnett handled for an inning-ending out at second base.

(7) Manasquan 6, (10) Rumson-Fair Haven 3
Dylan Vowteras blasted an opposite-field two-run home run in the bottom of the first to kick off his 4-for-4 game at the plate and junior left-hander Chase Kaplan bounced back from a scary first-inning collision to complete five innings as the Warriors beat the Bulldogs.
With the bases loaded and two out in the top of the first inning, Manasquan caught Rumson senior Parker Shenman attempting a delayed steal of home. At the end of the rundown, Shenman plowed through Kaplan, who held on to the ball for the final out, but was shaken up on the play and stayed on the ground for more than a minute. Shenman — Rumson’s starting second baseman and leadoff hitter — was ejected as a result of the shoulder to Manasquan’s starting pitcher.
Vowteras gave Manasquan a jolt in the bottom of the inning when he crushed a fastball over the fence in rightfield and off the second fence that runs along Manasquan’s football bleachers, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Rumson tied the game in the top of the second when Lloyd Bush — Shenman’s replacement at second base and in the leadoff spot — smacked a two-run double to the gap in right-centerfield to make it 2-2.
Vowteras again ignited a run-scoring rally in the bottom of the third when he ripped the first of three doubles by the Warriors in the half-inning. Shortstop Tristan Condon followed with an RBI double to make it 3-2 and first baseman R.T. Runge smoked an RBI double to the fence in leftfield to score Condon for a 4-2 Warriors lead.
Manasquan added two more runs in the fifth on a walk and hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded — the only two free passes issued by Rumson senior Owen O’Toole in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Third baseman D.J. Ylagan gave Rumson life in the top of the seventh when he led the inning off with an opposite-field homer to right, cutting Manasquan’s lead to 6-3. Keegan Hertel quickly put the long ball past him and retired the next three batters, including a pair of strikeouts, to end the game.
Manasquan moves on to Thursday’s sectional quarterfinal round and will travel to No. 2 Robbinsville.

(13) Cinnaminson 4, (4) Ocean 0
Tommy Kowaliwskyj took a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and one walk into the seventh inning, but a pair of walks and two of Ocean’s three errors in the game led to four Cinnaminson runs — enough to knock off the Spartans and advance to the sectional quarterfinals Thursday at No. 5 Raritan.
Kowaliwskyj started the top of the seventh with his 11th strikeout, but the game began to get away with a walk to the next batter, followed by an error. Dylan McAndrews then beat out an infield single to load the bases with one out and after a foul ball on the first pitch of the at-bat to Chris Pignatelli with the bases loaded, Kowaliwskyj missed on four straight pitches to walk in the game’s first run. Kowaliwskyj closed out his Ocean career with a workmanlike effort, throwing 108 pitches before passing the ball to classmate Ben Robinson.
Nick Harvey greeted Robinson with a two-run single to extend Cinnaminson’s lead to 3-0 and a two-out error plated the fourth run of the inning.
The four runs were more than enough for Pirates ace Anthony Alessandroni, who pitched a three-hit shutout on 87 pitches with just one walk and six strikeouts.

Dylan Zammit pitched a complete game for Holmdel while going pitch-for-pitch with Pitt commit Tyler Bunnell, but the Ravens scratched across runs in the fifth and sixth innings to give Bunnell what he would need to earn his seventh win and send Robbinsville to the sectional quarterfinals. (14) Manchester 3, (3) Cedar Creek 2
Brenden Spaziano broke up a combined no-hitter by four Cedar Creek pitchers with a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh and recorded the first out of the bottom of the inning before younger brother Sam Spaziano closed out the Hawks round-one upset over the Pirates.
Brody Boyd led off the top of the seventh with a walk and stole second base with one out before holding at second on a fly out to centerfield. Spaziano then lined a one-out single to center to plate Boyd, giving Manchester a 3-2 lead.
The Hawks fell into a 2-0 thanks to two unearned runs against Brenden Spaziano — one each in the second and third innings. Cedar Creek gave the lead away in the top of the fifth, when Jacob Budd walked the bases loaded and hit Justyce Garcia with two out to force in the Hawks’ first run. Cedar Creek made a pitching change after the hit-by-pitch, but Nate Winterbottom started his outing with a walk to Josh Rommel that scored Anthony Carino with the tying run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brenden Spaziano reached his max pitch count with a strikeout to start the inning and passed the ball to Sam with one out and none on. Sam Spaziano hit the first batter he faced, retired the next batter on a pop-up, then issued a walk to move the tying run into scoring position with the winning run on first. The freshman left-hander finished off the game by inducing a come-backer to the mound, which he flipped to first for the final out.

(5) Florence 5, (12) New Egypt 4 (8 Innings)
Down to its last strike, Florence extended the bottom of the seventh with a pair of walks to set the stage for R.J. Sobon, who drilled a first-pitch, game-tying, three-run home run with two out and the Flashes went on to walk off with an extra-inning win over the Warriors.
Aiden Healy allowed one uneared run in six innings, with Florence scoring in the bottom of the sixth to cut New Egypt’s lead to 4-1. The Warriors then turned to ace Nolan Arnold to close out the game and the junior right-hander struck out the first batter of the bottom of the seventh followed by a pop out. He then had Justin Marbach in a 2-2 count before losing him with a one-out walk, but Arnold was still one out from closing out a first-round win.
Winning pitcher Adam Piotrowski drew a five-pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Sobon — the No. 2 hitter in New Egypt’s order. After missing the strike zone on five of the last six pitches, Arnold laid in a first-pitch strike, but Sobon was ready for it. Sobon launched a fly ball to left field that cleared the fence and tied the game.
Arnold did his best to make up for the blown save by starting the top of the eighth with an infield single, but Flashes starter Josh Pagano retired the next two batters before reaching the single-game pitch limit. Piotrowski took over and the freshman recorded the final out of the eighth on three pitches.
The bottom of the eighth started off with a hit-by-pitch, but this time, Arnold bounced back by inducing a line out to left and following that up with a strikeout to move within an out of ending the inning. Evan Saintz then struck a line drive into right field and with Blake Boss on the move, the winning run scored on the play to give Florence a thrilling win while dealing New Egypt a heart-breaking loss.
Florence advances to play at No. 4 Shore in Thursday’s sectional quarterfinals.
