NJSIAA Tournament

Sectional Semifinals

South Jersey Non-Public A

(2) Red Bank Catholic 9, (3) St. Augustine 8

A two-out throwing error allowed RBC to score the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping a seven-run rally in the final frame and sending the Caseys to the sectional final for the second time in three years with an improbable come-from-behind win over the the defending Non-Public A champion Hermits.

St. Augustine jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the top of the second on runs that scored on two walks with the bases loaded, a hit batter with the bases loaded and a balk with the bases loaded. Caseys pitchers Ryan Prior and Luke Meyers combined to walk eight and hit three batters, but St. Augustine was even more generous on the mound. The Hermits issued 12 walks and hit two batters, bringing the combined total for both teams to 20 walks and five hit batters in the game.

In the seventh inning, the Hermits gave the Caseys their chance to rally with three straight walks after a one-out infield single by RBC senior shortstop Max Dantoni. St. Augustine coach Mike Ney pulled reliever Andrew Wilkinson — who took over for junior starter and Penn State commit Alex Weingartner to begin the top of the sixth — to go with Brady Jackson on the mound. Sophomore Luke Lonczak yanked a single through the left side to score two runs, cutting the Hermits lead to 8-5.

Senior second baseman A.J. Sciametta made it six straight RBC batters to reach by chopping the ball to the third base and beating it out for an infield single. Junior Drew Cannon then hit a pop-up into shallow centerfield that St. Augustine could not settle under and it dropped for an RBI single that moved every runner up one base while cutting the RBC deficit to 8-6.

Jackson then walked No. 9 hitter and sophomore centerfielder Luke Scaturro on four pitches for force in another run and move the winning run into scoring position with one out and the top of the order due up.

Ney made his second pitching change of the inning, giving the ball to right-hander Jameson Dobis. Facing Notre Dame commit and four-year RBC starter Dylan Passo, Dobis dotted two fastballs for the first two strikes and on a 2-2 count, broke off a slider that got Passo to swing and miss for the second out.

Dantoni then returned to the plate after starting the rally with an infield single and chopped a ball toward Jackson — now back at his original position after pitching to four batters — at second base. Jackson waited back on the ball and hurried his throw to first, which sailed wide of first baseman Will Childs. Sciametta trotted home with the tying run and pinch-runner Jordan Mosenthine, after hesitating when the throw first went past Childs, broke for the plate and dove in head first as the winning run without a throw.

RBC initially got back into the game with a run each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Passo walked and scored on a wild pitch to break up the shutout, then broke up Weingartner’s no-hit bid with a two-out, two-run, ground-rule double to pull the Caseys within 4-2 in the fourth.

St. Augustine answered right back with two runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI triple by Gabe Gillespie, followed by a sacrifice fly by Alex Bersani. Weingartner then pitched a one-two-three fifth with the aid of a 4-6-3 double play to send the game to the sixth with the Hermits leading, 6-2. St. Augustine then added a run each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.

RBC will take on No. 1 CBA Friday in the sectional final, which CBA will host. The two teams have played one another in each of the last two Monmouth County Tournament championship games, met in the 2015 Shore Conference Tournament final and have clashed multiple times in tournament games over the years, but have never played one another in an NJSIAA sectional championship game.

(1) CBA 6, (4) St. Joseph Metuchen 3

Senior Dan Russo delivered RBI singles in both the first and third innings and junior Danny DiTullio pitched six innings of four-hit relief to earn his second win in as many games as the Colts held off the Falcons to reach the sectional final in South Jersey Non-Public A for the second time in four years.

St. Joseph scored off CBA starter Sean Loggie in the top of the first for the game’s first run before CBA answered with two in the bottom of the first. The Colts drew three straight walks off St. Joseph starter Richard Zangara to start their game at the plate and junior Dylan Iwanyk tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Russo came up next and ripped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give CBA the lead for good.

Russo dunked an RBI single into shallow centerfield in the bottom of the third to give CBA a 3-1 lead and the Colts tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-1 lead. Twins Jayden and Jared Matejicka opened the fourth with back-to-back doubles, with Jayden scoring on Jared’s RBI double for a 4-1 lead. Senior centerfielder Will Fahey then blooped an RBI single into rightfield for a 5-1 Colts lead.

St. Joseph cut its deficit in half on a two-run home run by first baseman Logan Ring in the top of the sixth inning, but CBA responded with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning courtesy of an RBI single by Iwanyk.

DiTullio pitched a four-hit shutout on 88 pitches in a 2-0 CBA win over Paul VI in Friday’s South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinal and has been sharp over his last four starts. Since taking a 12-day break from in-game pitching following a May 7 outing vs. Manalapan, DiTullio is 2-1 with a 1.33 ERA, 26 strikeouts, three walks and 12 hits allowed in 21 innings. CBA has played only five games during that span and DiTullio has pitched in four of them.

DiTullio will not be eligible to pitch the championship game on Friday, which CBA will host against No. 2 Red Bank Catholic in the fourth meeting between the teams this season. The two Shore Conference Class A North rivals split the regular-season series within the division and RBC beat the Colts, 8-3, in the Monmouth County Tournament championship game.

South Jersey Non-Public B

(1) Gloucester Catholic 12, Ranney 3

Seniors Curt Chropuvka and Andrew Parisi each collected two hits in their final high-school game and helped keep the Panthers within striking distance into the middle innings, but the top-seeded Rams pulled away to eliminate the Panthers and reach the sectional final round of the NJSIAA Tournament for the eighth straight season.

Parisi doubled in the middle of a first-inning rally that netted Ranney the first run of the game and the Panthers held that 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the third. Making his first appearance on the mound this season after dealing with an injury throughout the season, sophomore J.L. Gallina pitched a pair of scoreless innings to start his night.

In the bottom of the third, the Rams hammered three consecutive run-scoring hits, starting with a two-run double by Braeden Lipoff that gave Gloucester Catholic a 2-1 lead. Jack Mustaro followed with an RBI double and Brody Gates made it a four-run inning with an RBI single.

Ranney fought back to within a run in the top of the fourth, with Chropuvka punching a single through the middle to score a run and pull the Panthers within 4-2. Chropuvka then stole second base on the front end of a double-steal, with sophomore Nate Fuller swiping home to cut Gloucester Catholic’s lead to 4-3.

Gloucester Catholic created some breathing room with a pair of sacrifice flies around an RBI single by Jason Bogart during a three-run fourth inning that pushed the Rams lead to 7-3. Ranney’s defense then abandoned it in the sixth inning, with Gloucester Catholic pouring on five unearned runs.

Gloucester Catholic will host No. 2 Bishop Eustace in Friday’s sectional final.
