OIB Ortho Week 2 Shore Conference Football Team of the Week: Holmdel Hornets
Shore Sports Insider OIB Ortho Team of the Week – Week 2
Shore Sports Insider is proud to partner with OIB Ortho this fall to present our weekly OIB Ortho Football Team of the Week Award, recognizing one Shore Conference program for its accomplishments on the field. We are also thrilled to welcome Joe Leone’s as a co-sponsor, providing a very generous $500 Pasta Party Gift Card each week to celebrate the winning team.
The Week 2 recipient of the 2025 OIB Ortho Football Team of the Week is Holmdel following the Hornets’ hard-fought 33-21 victory over Rumson-Fair Haven. On Tuesday, SSI visited practice to present head coach Noel Kavanagh and the team with a commemorative game ball and the $500 Joe Leone’s gift card for a well-earned pasta party.
The Hornets were the story of Week 2 in Shore Conference football as they took down last week’s No. 2 team, Rumson-Fair Haven, with a 33-21 win on the road. The victory ended Rumson’s 15-game winning streak, which was tied for the longest current streak in the state, and the Hornets beat the Bulldogs for the first time since 1999.
Holmdel showed its aspirations are as big as it gets: a run at No. 1 in the Shore, a Class A North title and the program’s first state sectional championship. Senior quarterback Jack Cannon continued to build his Offensive Player of the Year resume with 330 total yards, including 200 on the ground, four rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass. Junior Michael Todisco has been one of the Shore’s top defensive backs, and he registered two of the Hornets’ four interceptions in the win. A program that has never won a state title or been No. 1 in the Shore is now in some rarefied air.
Their 48-35 win over Donovan Catholic in the opener also aged well after the Griffins took down Toms River North.
Next game: Friday vs. Middletown South (0-3).
The special guest to present the Team of the Week Game Ball and the $500 Pasta Party gift card was Joe Introna, the founder of Joe Leone’s Italian Specialties.
