Group 4 State Semifinals

Winslow 14, Brick Memorial 12

The Mustangs (10-3) took the Eagles (11-2), the top-ranked public school in the state according to NJ Advance Media, to the brink before falling in a heartbreaker.

Winslow jumped ahead in the first quarter with junior quarterback Jalen Parker finding senior wideout Nyqir Helton on an 18-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles extended the lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Parker found sophomore wideout TJ Maddox on a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Brick Memorial battled back in the third quarter as senior quarterback Jason Lajara found senior wideout Nyzier Matthews on a 24-yard touchdown pass. A high snap on the extra point made the score 14-6. The Mustangs struck again early in the fourth quarter when Lajara found junior wideout Shawn Fowler on a 25-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion pass from Lajara fell incomplete which made the score 14-12.

The Mustangs defense, which was spectacular in the second half, gave Brick Memorial possession once again. Brick Memorial drove the ball deep into Winslow territory once again but would miss a field goal with 4:05 left in regulation. They would have one last chance after another stop, but Lajara’s final pass attempt was intercepted by Winslow senior defensive back Julian Peterson.

Senior quarterback Frenchmon Bethea tossed four touchdowns, ran for two touchdowns, and intercepted two passes on defense to lead the Pirates (11-2) past the Hornets (9-3) into the Group 3 State Championship. Bethea found senior wideout Gyan King on a 57-yard touchdown pass, senior wideout Jahmir Campfield on a 49-yard touchdown pass and a 32-yard touchdown pass, and senior wideout Ryan Staton on a four-yard touchdown pass. Senior quarterback Jack Cannon combined for five touchdowns in his final game. He found sophomore wideout Anthony Serini on touchdown passes of 37 and 13 yards. He also scored on touchdown runs of 50, 1, and 9 yards in addition to a successful two-point conversion rush and two successful two-point conversion passes to Serini and senior tight end Carmine Aliperti.

Controversy arose late in the game when Cannon appeared to run for a first down on a critical 4th-and-9 with the Hornets trailing 41-38. A questionable spot by the referees along the Cedar Creek sideline gave the Pirates the ball back. Cedar Creek then iced the game shortly after on Bethea’s fourth touchdown pass of the game.
