Central Jersey Group 5

The Patriots (5-5) battled but fell short in a shootout against the Knights (9-1). Junior quarterback Dakota Lasater threw three touchdown passes and ran for another in the loss. Lasater connected with junior wideout Mikey Lorenzo for a 20-yard touchdown pass in the first half. He would find junior wideout Jake Schultzel for touchdown passes of 25 and 45 yards in the second half. Schultzel also converted a 35-yard field goal. The Patriots have the option of picking up a consolation game next weekend.

South Jersey Group 4

(2) Millville 49, (7) Toms River East 7

Central Jersey Group 2

(4) Manasquan 35, (5) A.L. Johnson 0

Even without senior star tailback Ace Etienne, the Warriors (8-1) used a strong ground attack once again to dispatch the Crusaders (7-2).

The senior running back duo of Justice Morgan and Dylan Lu – who returned from injury for this game – each ran for two touchdowns, and junior quarterback Kyle Dow added an insurance score late to finish of A.L. Johnson. Morgan scored on two short-yardage runs, while Lu notched scores of four and 38 yards.

On the defensive side, junior linebacker Chris Matthaei recorded a sack and forced a fumble, while fellow junior linebacker Luke Barry recovered a fumble of his own.

Manasquan will advance to the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals, where they will travel to face top-seeded Camden next weekend. The Panthers defeated eighth-seeded Voorhees 53-0 on Friday night.

Central Jersey Group 1

(6) Point Beach 42, (3) Riverside 14

The Garnet Gulls (7-2) pulled the upset in the quarterfinals on the road over the Rams (7-3) for their first state playoff win since 2017.

Point Beach’s offense fired on all cylinders in the run and pass game, as senior quarterback Matthew Rossi threw four touchdown passes to three different receivers. Junior tight end Carmelo Giummo, sophomore wideout Blaise Sholander (two touchdown catches), and senior wide receiver Elijah Ives all scored through the air. Ives also broke free for a 92-yard rushing touchdown to start the third quarter, while sophomore fullback Gage Boyle opened the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

After the win, the Garnet Gulls advance to the Central Jersey Group 1 semifinals, where they will travel to face second-seeded Shore Regional next weekend. The Blue Devils, who defeated New Egypt on Friday night, beat Point Beach 63-7 in the regular season.

Consolation

Lakewood 28, Freehold Boro, 27

In the lone Saturday consolation matchup, the Piners (3-7) snapped a seven-game skid and closed the season on a positive note against the Colonials (2-8).

It was the Zion Jones show for Lakewood, as the senior running back ran in all four touchdowns, and converted on a duo of two-point conversion attempts.

South Jersey Group 5

(2) Southern 36, (7) Williamstown 3

Sophomore running back Niko Iliescu rumbled for four rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion as the Rams (9-1) rolled past the Braves (3-7). Iliescu scored on three one-yard touchdown runs and one 11-yard touchdown run. Junior quarterback Carson Abbato found junior wideout Chris Raub on a 58-yard touchdown strike. Southern will host Kingsway in the South Jersey Group 5 semifinals next weekend.

(5) Toms River North 22, (4) Cherry Hill East 14

Junior wideout Cole Garrison on a six-yard rushing touchdown and a kick return touchdown to lead the Mariners (5-5) past the formerly unbeaten Cougars (9-1). Junior running back Lucas Elias broke off a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Toms River North will travel to Atlantic City in the South Jersey Group 5 sectional semifinals next weekend.

Central Jersey Group 4

(1) Brick Memorial 57, (8) Marlboro 7

Senior quarterback Jason Lajara threw three touchdown passes and senior wideout Nyzier Matthews caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for a touchdown as the Brick Memorial Mustangs (8-2) raced past the Marlboro Mustangs (2-8). Senior running back Nazeer Whittaker scored two rushing touchdowns. Senior wideout Rocco Iacullo added a receiving touchdown. Junior quarterback Tyler Pierce and senior wideout Dylan Terry each had a rushing touchdown. Junior defensive lineman Jaxon Ellis sacked the Marlboro quarterback for a safety. Brick Memorial will host Steinert in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals next weekend.

(2) Manalapan 40, (7) Hamilton 0

The Braves (7-3) stymied the Hornets (5-4) with a balanced scoring effort and dominant defensive performance. Senior running back Ah’sere Woolfork scored on a 62-yard touchdown run. Junior running back Nicky Palmieri added a 35-yard touchdown run. Junior quarterback Cameron Desfosse found senior slotback Ryan Melendez on a 44-yard touchdown pass. Senior linebacker Jamil Mercado returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. Senior wideout Nick Friscia added a touchdown. Manalapan will host Middletown North in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals next weekend.

(5) Steinert 14, (4) Red Bank 6

The Bucs (5-4) fell to the Spartans (7-2). Junior quarterback Brett Laude found senior wideout Ari Fraser on an 11-yard touchdown pass for the lone touchdown in the loss.

(3) Middletown North 28, (6) Middletown South 19

The Lions (4-4) earned their first victory since 2016 over the crosstown rival Eagles (3-6) to advance to the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals. Junior running back Matt Belenko scored on a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Belenko would add a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which was followed by a two-point conversion pass from senior quarterback Owen Robson to junior tight end Kade Little.

Middletown South responded with two touchdown passes in the second quarter from senior quarterback Luca Donofrio to senior wideout Logan Burbank. A failed extra point made the score 14-13 Middletown North at the half.

Robson found junior wideout Daniel Sigler on a 25-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to give North a 21-13 lead before South responded early in the fourth quarter on a 93-yard touchdown strike from Donofrio to Burbank which was followed by a missed two-point conversion. The Lions iced the game on a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown by Little late in the fourth quarter.

Middletown North will travel to Manalapan in the Central Jersey Group 4 semifinals next weekend.

South Jersey Group 4

(6) Northern Burlington 24, (3) Central 14

The Golden Eagles (8-2) fell to the Greyhounds (7-3). Junior wideout CJ Yates scored on a 10-yard touchdown run and senior quarterback Jake Halpin found junior wideout Dom Prasad for a 23-yard touchdown pass in the loss.

Central Jersey Group 3

(5) Neptune 21, (4) Hopewell Valley 11

The Scarlet Fliers (9-1) knocked off the Bulldogs (7-3) on the road to advance to the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Junior quarterback Caleb Brown-Mason threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Mike Maclennan and a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Daaron Lynch. Junior running back Kingston Pinnock punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to seal the game in the fourth quarter. Pinnock finished with over 100 yards rushing in the win.

Neptune will travel to Holmdel in the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals next weekend.

(1) Holmdel 43, (8) Cinnaminson 10

Senior quarterback Jack Cannon tossed three touchdown passes and ran for two more as the Hornets (7-2) took their first step towards their first sectional title in program history. Cannon scored on touchdown runs of five and two yards. He found junior wideout Michael Todisco and sophomore wideout Anthony Serini on a pair of 40-yard touchdown passes. He would find Serini again on a 70-yard touchdown pass. Junior running back Matthew Scheinman added a six-yard touchdown run. Serini also scored on a two-point conversion. Freshman defensive back Tyler Carri came away with an interception on defense on the first drive of the game.

The Hornets will host Neptune in the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals.

(7) Matawan 14, (2) Somerville 13

The Huskies (6-4) stunned the Pioneers (8-2) to advance to the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals. Junior defensive end Kevin Auguste returned an interception 92 yards for the first score of the game, but the Huskies run was stuffed on the two-point conversion that followed. Somerville would take a 7-6 before the Huskies responded late in the second quarter on an electric 11-yard touchdown scramble from sophomore quarterback BlairCarter Gagneron. Gagneron found senior wideout Welman Crooms on the ensuing two-point conversion.

Somerville would cut the deficit to one late in the third quarter, but an excessive celebration penalty followed by a false start backed the ball up to the 23-yard line. The Pioneers two-point conversion was knocked down. Late in the fourth quarter, a last-ditch pass from Somerville was intercepted in the end zone in a crowd of Huskies.

Matawan will travel to Seneca in the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals next weekend.

Central Jersey Group 2

(2) Wall 41, (7) Bordentown 0

Senior running back Dylan Cohen rumbled for three touchdown runs and senior quarterback Brian McKenna found junior wideout Johnny Partusch on two touchdown passes as the Crimson Knights (7-2) blanked the Scotties (7-2) to advance to the sectional semifinals. Cohen scored on runs of 7, 25, and 1. McKenna hooked up with Partusch on touchdown passes of 25 and 68 yards. Junior quarterback Franny Scaramellino added a one-yard touchdown run.

Wall will host Rumson-Fair Haven in the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals last weekend. The two teams met in the Central Jersey Group 2 final last season.

(3) Rumson-Fair Haven 14, (6) Point Boro 10

Senior defensive lineman Ben Roberts knocked down a fourth-down pass in the final seconds as the Bulldogs (6-3) held off an upset bid from the Panthers (4-5) to advance to the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals. Senior running back Kellen Murray scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter in his first game back from injury since Week 1. Point Boro responded in the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run from senior running back Calvin Videon-Perino. The Panthers seized momentum with a 42-yard field goal from junior kicker Jack Sullivan on the final play of the first half. Rumson regained the lead in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run from Brady Williams that was set up by a 20-yard catch from junior wideout Cole Spoonire on third-and-11.

Rumson-Fair Haven will travel to Wall in the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals next weekend. The two teams met last year in the Central Jersey Group 2 final.

Central Jersey Group 1

(2) Shore 34, (7) New Egypt 0

Junior running back Cole Torres rushed for three touchdowns on 16 rushing attempts for 112 yards as the Blue Devils (7-2) earned their second victory of the season over the Warriors (4-5) to advance to the Central Jersey Group 1 semifinals.

Shore will host the winner of tomorrow’s quarterfinal matchup between Riverside and Point Beach next weekend.

(4) Manville 35, (5) Asbury Park 0

Nonconference

No. 4 Donovan Catholic 21, St. Joseph (Metuchen) 3

The Griffins (7-3) closed the regular season on a six-game win streak, their latest coming at home to spoil the Falcons’ (8-1) undefeated season.

It was a scoreless defensive battle for the first 34 minutes of the game, as St. Joseph struck first with a 20-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Austin Loreti to take a 3-0 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. From there, it was all Donovan Catholic.

Sophomore quarterback A.J. Pena gave the Griffins a lead it would not relinquish, scampering into the end zone from 15 yards out a minute into the fourth quarter. Four minutes later, junior signal-caller Kahden Davis scored a touchdown of his own, finding the end zone on a four-yard read-option run. With just under four minutes to play, Pena notched his second score of the night on a ten-yard run to ice the game.

Donovan Catholic overcame three first-half fumbles and had a strong defensive game with seven sacks. Both teams now wait for Sunday’s non-public bracket reveal.


Thursday, Oct. 30

Nonconference

No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 41, Notre Dame 0

The Caseys (9-1) cruised in their final regular-season game against the Fighting Irish (4-6).

Red Bank Catholic’s freshmen duo of quarterback Rahmir Rivera and running back Gabe Kemp did plenty of work once again, scoring two touchdowns each through the air and on the ground, respectively. Both of Rivera’s scores went to senior wideout Daniel Zabora, and the Caseys took a commanding 34-0 lead at the half.

The lone second-half score came on a 30-yard jet sweep touch pass from junior quarterback Rocco Bongiovi to freshman wide receiver Mason Koch.

 

Wednesday, Oct. 29

Consolation

Lacey 21, Hammonton 14

The Lions (4-6) closed out their season with their second straight victory in a consolation matchup against the Blue Devils (1-9).

Junior running back Joe Davis added the first two scores in the first quarter, returning the opening kickoff 95 yards, and later scored a three-yard touchdown run. Junior quarterback Joe Geiger lofted a 60-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Grayson Koch to take a 21-7 lead. Hammonton found the end zone twice in the second and fourth quarters, but the Lions’ defense also added a blocked field goal in the third.

Brick 19, Pinelands 7

The Green Dragons (5-5) notched two straight wins to close the season, the second coming in a victory over the Wildcats (6-4).

Senior wideout and defensive back Germaine Rice Jr. reached the end zone twice, with a rushing touchdown and an interception taken back to the house for another score. Sophomore wideout Tyshawn Corbett added a receiving touchdown in the victory.

Ocean 38, Monmouth 18

The Spartans (5-5) got touchdowns from all over in a consolation victory over the Falcons (5-5).

Junior quarterback Jake Garrett accounted for a touchdown each with his arms and his legs, while junior quarterback Jordan Gaudious lofted two scores of his own through the air. Senior wideout Mickey McGovern hauled in two touchdown catches, and junior wide receiver Justin Farina added another. Senior running back Josh Calixte added a rushing touchdown of his own.

Sophomore kicker Joey Bercovicz had an all-around strong night on special teams, converting all four extra points, a field goal, and had two onside kicks that Ocean recovered.

Jackson 42, Raritan 27

It was the Jio Kabiri show for the Jaguars (3-7), as they finished their season on a high note against the Rockets (3-6).

The senior running back ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, also adding a score on the defensive side. Jackson scored their other touchdown on a fake field goal, as senior kicker Joe Muzzillo fired a 20-yard score to senior running back Tucker Pazinko.

Keansburg 27, Middlesex 6 

The Titans (3-6) used a combination of a strong run game and dominance along the defensive line to win one of three consolation matchups between Shore and Big Central Conference opponents against the Blue Jays (2-8).

Sophomore running back Taurian Black scored rushing touchdowns of one, ten, and 30 yards to set the tone on the ground, and sophomore quarterback Mason Rand lofted a 40-yard passing touchdown to senior running back Ishon Young.

On the defensive side, senior defensive back Gavin Flanzbaum and junior defensive back Mikey Clayton both picked off passes. Clayton also added four sacks and three tackles for loss, while senior defensive end Jayvonne Martinez recorded three sacks of his own.

Dayton 34, Keyport 6

Senior running back Mekai Henderson scored from six yards out late in the fourth quarter for the Red Raiders’ (1-9) lone touchdown, as the home Bulldogs (7-2) finished their season with a win.

Barnegat 15, Allentown 6

The Bengals (5-5) battled through a blustery and rainy night to defeat the Redbirds (1-9) and finish .500 on the year.

Senior quarterback Jack Haviland accounted for both touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground. He opened up the scoring with a 20-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver Justin Fitzpatrick with two minutes left in the first quarter, giving Barnegat an 8-0 lead it would take into the halftime locker room. Haviland struck again to open the third quarter, as he broke free for a 25-yard score five minutes into the frame.

Manchester 18, J.P. Stevens 12

The Hawks (1-9) of the Shore Conference notched their first win of the season, holding on in the final minute to fend off a comeback attempt from the Hawks (0-10) of the Big Central.

Senior running back Malik Pharmes found the end zone all three times on the ground for Manchester, scoring touchdowns of seven, two, and 32 yards, all in the opening quarter and-a-half of the game. JP Stevens had chances late to tie or take the lead, but Manchester’s defense held strong and secured the win on a fourth-down stop at midfield with 20 seconds left.
