Ocean 10, Red Bank 6 – Game Story
Sophomore running back Alex Staten ripped off an 82-yard touchdown run late in the first half and freshman kicker Joe Bercovicz added a 30-yard field goal with 2:39 left in the third quarter to send the Spartans past the Bucs and give head coach Chad King his first win back leading his alma mater.
Red Bank jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter when senior quarterback Quinn Niesz connected with junior wideout Jah’mir Lane-Bailey for a 29-yard touchdown after the Bucs recovered a fumble on a punt. Ocean took the lead on Staten’s long touchdown run and extended the lead when Bercovicz split the uprights. Red Bank took a shot to the end zone on the final play of the game but Ocean made the tackle at the 8-yard line to seal the dramatic victory.
Staten finished with 92 yards rushing on five carries and Danny Farina had a sack and five tackles for loss to lead the Spartans’ defense.

Toms River East 12, Barnegat 7 – Game Story
Senior wide receiver Dylan Errion leaped to haul in a 26-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Anthony Demarco with 7:26 left in the fourth quarter as the Raiders rallied to beat the Bengals and start the season 1-0.
Toms River East led 3-0 at halftime on a 28-yard field goal by senior Mert Fat. Barnegat took a 7-3 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter when sophomore running back Chris Santero scored on a 10-yard run and sophomore kicker Anthony Dringus added the extra point. Toms River East then went three and out, but the game flipped when Fat’s punt was downed at the Barnegat 2-yard line. On the next play, senior James Lynch burst through the Barnegat line and dropped the ball carrier for a safety, cutting Barnegat’s lead to 7-5 with 9:46 to play.
The Raiders embarked on a six-play, 55-yard scoring drive to take the lead. A horse collar penalty on Barnegat moved the ball to the 35-yard line and helped set up the go-ahead touchdown pass from Demarco to Errion.
Errion caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown, senior running back Christian Valeo ran for 58 yards, and Demarco threw for 64 yards.
Barnegat senior running back Myquan Rush-Esdaile, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, left the game in the first half with an apparent injury and did not return. Santero gave them a jolt with 82 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries, 55 of which came in the second half. Junior quarterback Jack Haviland threw for 66 yards and ran for 39 yards, while senior linebacker Cole Toddings had a monster game with 15 total tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and a pass breakup.
Battle at the Beach
Manchester 26, West Deptford 21
Senior quarterback Aidan Lunn tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Ny’Zyr Battle with 8:47 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Hawks to a victory over the Eagles in a thrilling back-and-forth game at Ocean City’s Carey Stadium.
Senior kicker Ian Spicer connected on a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter and junior running back Malik Pharmes added a 25-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead.
West Deptford responded on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Zamir Davis following a 22-yard completion from Brady Cobb to Michael Joseph. The Eagles ran a trick play for the 2-point conversion with Davis taking it across the goal line to cut Manchester’s lead to 10-8 with 3:31 left in the first half.
Manchester answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Pharmes with 2.3 seconds left in the first half. Penalties hurt the Hawks on their third scoring drive but a clutch fourth-down conversion by Lunn followed by a 15-yard scamper from the senior quarterback set up Pharmes for the touchdown that re-established a two-score lead at halftime, 17-8.
Manchester appeared poised to extend its lead early in the third quarter after a long punt return by M.J. Goins down to the 5-yard line, but the Hawks were stopped on downs at the West Deptford 4-yard line. On the next play, Cobb connected with Cole Paskiewicz on a 96-yard touchdown pass. Manchester stopped the 2-point conversion and then added a 25-yard field goal by Spicer to push their advantage to 20-14 with 3:18 left in the third quarter.
West Deptford took its first lead of the game on a 44-yard touchdown run by Bryce Wynn and the extra point by Cobb with 1:34 left in the third quarter. Manchester came right back with a long gain by Goins on a middle screen to set up the touchdown pass from Lunn to Battle. The two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete, giving Manchester a 26-21 lead with 8:47 left in the game.
Lunn was hurt on a play late in the first half and limped off the field. He returned but could not run the ball as he did in the first half. He finished with 149 yards passing and a touchdown and 98 yards rushing on 11 carries. Pharmes also suffered what appeared to be a lower-body injury in the second half and did not return. He ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Goins ran for 75 yards on 10 carries and caught four passes for 72 yards.
Dante Mortellite recorded a team-high 13 tackles, Kurtis Mayer had eight tackles and one sack, and Aidan Phillips-Frazee had eight tackles and one tackle for loss to lead the defensive effort.
Nonconference
No. 6 Brick Memorial 23, Allentown 20
Sophomore kicker Jack Marotta connected on a tiebreaking 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to lift the Mustangs to a season-opening road victory over the Redbirds.
Brick Memorial led 20-7 at halftime before Allentown rallied to tie the score at 20 in the second half.
Senior running back Kevin Andrews ran for a 5-yard touchdown on the Mustangs’ first possession before junior quarterback Jason Lajara ran for an 8-yard touchdown later in the first quarter and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Frank Taylor in the second quarter.
Andrews finished with 201 yards rushing and a score on 25 carries while junior wideout Nyzier Matthews caught six passes for 106 yards. Lajara completed 8 of 14 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown and ran for 51 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Junior linebacker Trey Tallmadge recorded 10 total tackles with one tackle for loss, an interception, one QB pressure and three pass breakups, while senior linebacker A.J. Ehrmantraut posted 10 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 tackle for loss to lead the defense. Senior defensive end Jaxon Figueroa also had a sack.
Jackson Liberty 34, Hamilton West 0
Junior quarterback Mason Ciccariello tossed a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver James Dressler and also ran for a 9-yard touchdown, while sophomore running back Corleii Thomas had touchdown runs of six and four yards in the first half as the Lions routed the Hornets to start the season with an emphatic victory.
Senior running back Corzeek Palms added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to set the running clock in motion.
Thomas finished with 92 yards rushing and two scores on 14 carries. Ciccariello completed 12 of 15 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown and ran for 50 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Sophomore Aidan Kelly caught five passes for 92 yards.
Middletown (Del.) 16, No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 14
Senior quarterback Frankie Williams ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Daniel Zabora with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but the Caseys could not complete their comeback attempt and fell to the Cavaliers on the road in Delaware.
Middletown led 9-0 after the first quarter and held onto the lead the entire game. Williams’ scoring run cut the deficit to 9-7 with 7:21 left in the first half and the score remained that way until Middletown increased its lead to 16-7 in the fourth quarter.
Bernards 35, Monmouth 6
Freshman quarterback Ryan Corwin scored on a 10-yard touchdown with four minutes left in the fourth quarter to account for the Falcons’ only touchdown as the visiting Mountaineers built a big first-half lead and cruised to victory in Tinton Falls.

Nondivisional
No. 11 Holmdel 38, Long Branch 32 – Game Story
Junior quarterback Jack Cannon ran for 174 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 107 yards in a fantastic duel with Long Branch quarterback Quinton Fisher as the Hornets held off the Green Wave in a thrilling season-opener.
Fisher ran for 175 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns as Long Branch continued to battle back after falling behind by three touchdowns in the first half. Senior wide receiver Aulander Daniels caught six passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown.
Cannon scored on two 3-yard touchdown runs in the first half and Cipriano Bodnar blocked a punt that Hamza Elmesi recovered in the end zone when Holmdel forged a 21-0 lead. Long Branch got on the board via an 18-yard scoring pass from Fisher to Daniels with 6:37 left in the first half. Holmdel responded with a 23-yard field goal by Brandon Mueller before Fisher scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to pull Long Branch within 24-13 at halftime.
In the latter stages of the third quarter, Daniels lined up at quarterback and scored on a 5-yard run to cut Long Branch’s deficit to 24-19. The Hornets responded with a 1-yard touchdown run by Matt Scheinman to go ahead 31-19 but Long Branch continued to fight back and cut the Hornets’ lead to 31-26 on a 42-yard touchdown run by Fisher with 9:12 left in the game.
Holmdel came right back with a long touchdown of its own when Cannon broke off a 63-yard touchdown run, but Fisher matched him with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Daniels with 7:33 remaining.
Long Branch recovered a fumble at Holmdel’s 36-yard line and moved to the 13 with under six minutes to play but turned the ball over on downs.
Wall 34, Matawan 7 – Game Story
Senior running back Mason Adam ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Fran Scaramellino as the Crimson Knights opened a big lead in the first half and held off the Huskies to start 1-0 for the first time since 2020.
Scaramellino completed 9 of 10 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown, junior wide receiver Heath Reinhardt ran for a 31-yard touchdown and junior running back Dylan Cohen added a 6-yard touchdown run that put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Wall’s defense forced five turnovers with junior linebacker Justin Davis intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and recording a sack to lead the way. Junior strong safety Jack Murphy also intercepted a pass that led to Cohen’s touchdown run. Sophomore Kai Smith recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff that led to a touchdown and junior linebacker Thomas Plisky recovered a fumble later in the first half.
Senior quarterback Am’ir Martinez ran for 91 yards and a touchdown and threw for 71 yards, and senior running back Colin Palumbo ran for 90 yards to lead Matawan.
No. 10 Freehold Township 35, Toms River South 14
Senior quarterback Nick Cardone threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 43 yards as the Patriots went into Detwiler Stadium and defeated the Indians to open their season.
Cardone connected with four different receivers on touchdowns, hitting Noah Marchica on a 13-yard score, finding Noah Cancela for a 26-yard touchdown, delivering a 32-yard touchdown pass to Luke Meehan and threading a 35-yard scoring pass to Nick Schicchi. Meehan caught four passes for a team-high 111 yards, including a 65-yard reception. Senior running back Justin Tamai added 49 yards rushing and a 14-yard touchdown run.
Freehold Township led 21-6 at halftime.
Juniors Jonathan Kokotis and Dominick Fiore recorded three tackles for loss each while seniors Jake Minniear and Braden Larkin had one sack and one forced fumble each. Jack Mills added a fumble recovery.
Battle at the Beach
Cherokee 30, No. 7 Middletown South 0
Senior running back Brendan Sliva ran for 82 yards on 21 carries to lead the Eagles in their loss to the Chiefs.
Cooper Burti completed 6 of 8 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns and Murad Campfield ran for 144 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries to lead Cherokee. Sam Resto and Darwin Walker II had touchdown receptions and Matthew St. John kicked a 25-yard field goal. Walker II, Evan Bryfogle and Nasir Oliver had one interception each on defense, including a pick-6 by Walker II to open the game.

No. 1 Toms River North 31, Downingtown East (Pa.) 2
Senior quarterback T.J. Valerio accounted for four touchdowns with a 30-yard touchdown run, a 35-yard touchdown pass to Mekai Morse, a 40-yard touchdown pass to Camryn Thomas and a 40-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Mordecai Ford as the Mariners dominated the first half and put away the Cougars.
Senior kicker Yianni Papanikolas added a 30-yard field goal. Toms River North outgained Downington 303-0 in the first half.
St. Augustine 35, No. 4 Donovan Catholic 6
Sophomore quarterback Kyle Dow threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Michael Thomas III that gave the Griffins a first-quarter lead before the host Hermits ripped off 35 straight points for a convincing victory.
Dow completed 9 of 18 passes for 130 yards with one touchdown and one interception and Thomas caught four passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Julian Turney ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, Ryan Stoehr tossed a touchdown pass to Liam Flynn, Roman Coney ran for a 5-yard touchdown and Ty McLeer ran for a 12-yard touchdown for St. Augustine. The Hermits also held Donovan to just 46 yards rushing on 14 carries.
No. 5 Point Boro 49, Steinert 7
Sophomore quarterback Jake Clayton ran for 55 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries and senior fullback Dylan Reitmeyer ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries as the Panthers rolled up 436 yards rushing on an average of 10.5 yards per carry to cruise past the Spartans at Al Saner Field.
Junior fullback Calvin Videon-Perino added 56 yards and a touchdown on six carries, senior slotback Colin Obser ran for 50 yards on just three carries and senior quarterback Mike Ollendorf ran for a touchdown in the second half.
Senior defensive tackle Paul Hagenmeyer led the defensive effort with five tackles and 0ne sack while Obser and Reitmeyer also had five tackles each.
No. 8 Jackson Memorial 17, North Brunswick 7
Junior running back Jonah Glenn ran for 205 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and Jackson’s defense allowed just 51 total yards as the Jaguars took the lead late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Raiders and start the season 1-0.
Senior quarterback Dennis Caswell had a 2-yard touchdown run and senior kicker Joe Muzzillo connected on a go-ahead 36-yard field goal that gave Jackson a 10-7 lead with 2:36 left. Glenn added a touchdown run with 1:10 remaining to make it a two-score game.
Jackson yielded just six yards rushing on 20 North Brunswick attempts.
Piscataway 21, No. 9 Manalapan 11
Junior running back A’shere Woolfolk had a six-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion and Kai Bohichik kicked a 29-yard field goal for the Braves in their road loss to the Chiefs.
Bryce Payne got Piscataway on the board when he recovered a fumble in the end zone after the Chiefs completed a pass in the second quarter. Jahai Johnson extended Piscataway’s lead to 14-3 with a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and, after Woolfolk’s scores made it 14-11, Johnson broke free for a 55-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to put the game away.
No. 12 St. John Vianney 34, Carteret 0
Junior quarterback Zach LaBarca completed 13 of 19 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown and sophomore running back Adbul Turay ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns and returned a kickoff for a touchdown as the Lancers opened the Bobby Acosta era with a dominant victory over the Ramblers in Holmdel.
Dante Campagna caught seven passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and Adam Urs posted 80 yards receiving on just three receptions. LaBarca added 35 yards rushing on five carries and Turay added two catches for 35 yards.
Lakewood 22, Ewing 20
Senior quarterback Rahmel Anderson ran for 253 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries and converted two 2-point conversions as the Piners opened their season with a win over the Blue Devils.
Anderson led the Shore Conference in rushing yards last season with 2,182.
Freehold 28, New Brunswick 0
Senior Qua’Mir Everett returned a punt 44 yards for a touchdown and caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jayshawn Wiggs as the Colonials blanked the Zebras to give head coach Derek Reichenbecher his first win at Freehold.
Everett had two other long touchdowns called back on penalties. Damier Lester made up for it with a sensational 66-yard punt return touchdown and Jamar Reed added an 8-yard touchdown run to seal the victory with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Wiggs completed 7 of 15 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown while Everett had two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown and Lester had two catches for 54 yards. Senior Ja’mir Irby recorded a team-high eight tackles with four tackles for loss, senior Matt John posted six tackles with one sack and three tackles for loss and junior Dom Larosa had five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble to spearhead the defense’s shutout. Sophomore Joe Diver added one sack.
Central 20, Hightstown 0
Senior wide receiver Royalty Riley caught touchdown passes of 11 and 7 yards and intercepted two passes on defense to lead the Golden Eagles to a shutout victory over the Rams to begin the season 1-0.
Senior running back Nick Ruggiero had a five-yard touchdown run and approached the 100-yard mark on the ground. Liam Hurley and C.J. Yates also snagged interceptions on defense to help preserve the shutout.
Manville 28, Keyport 7
Marshall Collangelo ran for a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to account for the Red Raiders’ lone score in their season-opening loss to the Mustangs.
Manville built a 21-0 lead through three quarters on touchdown runs by Josh D’Ambrosio, Naquavere Thomas and Isaiah Bennett. Thomas added a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Marlboro 34, Colts Neck 0
Senior running back Christian LaFonte scored a career-high three touchdowns and the defense pitched a shutout to send the Mustangs to a thorough victory over the Cougars to start the season.
Senior running back Jemell Bender added a touchdown run and junior quarterback Zach Caporale threw a touchdown pass to senior fullback A.J. Muhlbach.

Manasquan 33, Neptune 0
Junior quarterback Matt Antonucci filled the box score in his first varsity start by rushing for a touchdown, throwing a touchdown pass and catching a touchdown as the Warriors opened their season with a shutout victory over the Scarlet Fliers at Vic Kubu Warrior Field.
Antonucci gave Manasquan a 7-0 lead with a 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The lead grew to 13-0 in the second quarter on a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Jack O’Reilly. Junior running back Ace Etienne scored from two yards out for a 20-0 lead before Manasquan closed the third quarter with a halfback option pass from junior Frankie Tackett to Antonucci to open up a 27-0 advantage. Junior running back Dylan Lu closed out the scoring with a late touchdown run.
Battle at The Beach
Southern 17, Highland 0
Senior running backs Justi Silva and DJ Halm scored on short touchdown runs and senior Keegan Foote kicked a field goal as the Rams shut out the Tartans to start 1-0 for the sixth straight season.
Foote got Southern on the board with a 27-yard field goal and the Rams held that 3-0 lead through halftime. Silva made it 10-0 with a 3-yard touchdown run with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and Halm put the finishing touchdowns on the victory with a 6-yard scoring run with 8:45 remaining in the game.

Point Beach 28, South River 0
Junior quarterback Matt Rossi connected with junior wide receiver Justin Tierney on a pair of touchdown passes and the Garnet Gulls defense shut down the Rams to deliver the program’s first shutout since 2021.
Rossi tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tierney to begin the scoring before a 5-yard touchdown run by senior running back Liam Brosnan stretched the lead to 13-0. Senior wingback Ryan Scannell scored on a 2-yard run and Brosnan added the 2-point conversion for a 21-0 lead, and Rossi and Tierney closed out the scoring with a 28-yard touchdown passing play.
