Class A North

No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven 34, Middletown South 6

Senior quarterback Owen O’Toole completed 9 of 13 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score to go over 5,000 yards passing for his career and lead the Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0) to a victory over the Eagles (2-3, 1-2).

Junior tight end Jack Gyimesi had an 81-yard touchdown reception, senior wideout Nick Thomas had a 68-yard touchdown reception and senior wide receiver Jordan Angstreich caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Kellen Murray ran for 82 yards on eight carries.

Carson Memmot added an interception return for a touchdown and junior linebacker Toby Najenson recorded two sacks as the Rumson starting defense did not allow a touchdown for the third straight game.

 

Class A South

No. 1 Toms River North 24, No. 4 Point Boro 21

A 20-yard field goal by senior Yianni Papanikolas that hit off the left upright and bounced through the goal posts with 46 seconds left in regulation lifted the top-ranked Mariners (5-0, 3-0) to a dramatic comeback victory over the upset-minded Panthers (3-2, 2-1).

Point Boro had a huge time of possession advantage thanks to its triple-option rushing attack and led 14-0 in the first half on touchdown runs by sophomore slotback Nick Spanola and senior fullback Dylan Reitmeyer. Toms River North ran just one play in a span of 16 minutes during the first half and finished with just 14 offensive plays over the first two quarters. The Mariners were able to get on the board just before halftime when senior quarterback T.J. Valerio connected with sophomore Cole Garrison for a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Toms River North tied the score at 14 with 7:21 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run by Valerio. Point Boro went back ahead, 21-14, when Reitmeyer polished off an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Mariners tied the game at 21 with 7:04 left in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Valerio to senior wide receiver Nasir Jackson.

Valerio completed 19 of 25 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 65 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries to lead the Mariners to their 31st straight win over public school opponents. Senior wideout Cam Thomas caught four passes for a game-high 61 yards while Jackson had five catches for 56 yards and Garrison caught five passes for 41 yards.

Junior linebacker Brady Cicala recorded a team-high 12 tackles and senior linebacker Eddie Slosky had 10 tackles with one tackle for loss to lead the Mariners’ defense.

Reitmeyer ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and Spanola ran for 50 yards and a touchdown on six carries for Point Boro. Senior linebacker Colin Obser recorded a team-high 12 tackles and forced a fumble that was recovered by sophomore Jack Clayton. Senior defensive lineman Lou DiBiase recorded nine tackles and one sack.

 

No. 5 Brick Memorial 34, No. 9 Donovan Catholic 27

Junior quarterback Jason Lajara threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns, two to junior wide receiver Nyzier Matthews and another to senior Matt Hillin, as the Mustangs (4-1, 2-1) held off the Griffins (1-3, 1-2) for a bounce-back win.

Matthews had two receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns and Hillin caught two passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Shawn Fowler returned an interception for a touchdown and junior Erik Pedre returned a fumble for a touchdown as the Mustangs’ defense helped put them over the top for the victory. Senior linebacker A.J. Ehrmantraut made a team-high 10 tackles and junior Mike Pappas recorded his first varsity sack.

 

Howell 18, No. 8 Jackson Memorial 0

A first-quarter safety stood up as the only points the Rebels (2-2, 1-2) would need as seniors Quincy Shaw, Ryan Cross and Zach Padilla led a stern defensive effort that shut out the Jaguars (2-3, 0-3).

Padilla intercepted two passes, including an 87-yard pick-6 in the fourth quarter. Cross also had an interception and Shaw recorded a team-high seven tackles with one tackle for loss. Howell led 5-0 entering the fourth quarter before senior quarterback Vince Meehan threw a touchdown pass to senior Gavin Carr and Padilla returned an interception for a touchdown.

 

Class B North

Freehold Township 34, Matawan 21

Senior quarterback Nick Cardone completed 16 of 25 passes for 267 yards and tied his own single-game program record with five touchdown passes to lead the Patriots (4-1, 3-0) to a victory over the Huskies (1-4, 1-2).

Sophomore wide receiver Jake Schultzel caught four passes for a career-high 136 yards and three touchdowns, senior wideout Noah Cancela caught eight passes for 84 yards and a touchdown, and junior Nick Schicchi caught a 25-yard touchdown pass. Senior running back Justin Tamai ran for 65 yards on nine carries.

Junior linebacker Johnathan Kokotis made 10 tackles with one tackle for loss, junior defensive back Jake Rattiner posted 10 tackles and a pass breakup, and sophomore linebacker Jake Platt recorded two tackles for loss to lead the Freehold Township defense.

Freehold Township remains tied with Middletown North for first place in the division.

Senior quarterback Am’ir Martinez ran for 128 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and completed 6 of 8 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown to lead Matawan. Senior Jaylen Williams ran for 52 yards and a touchdown and senior Colin Palumbo ran for 79 yards on 11 carries.

 

Class B South

Central 26, Southern 21

Senior quarterback Joe Vezzosi threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver C.J. Yates with 20 seconds left in regulation to cap a thrilling comeback as the Golden Eagles (5-0, 3-0) rallied for a tremendous victory over the Rams (4-1, 2-1) to win the Boyd-Emmert trophy and take over sole possession of first place in B South.

 

Vezzosi threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns and Yates caught five passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wideout Royalty Riley caught six passes for 101 yards, including a 41-yard reception on 4th-and-10 on the go-ahead scoring drive.

Senior quarterback Cooper Dempsey threw for 128 yards and a touchdown, connecting with senior Talon Plenge on a 29-yard touchdown that tied the game at 14 in the third quarter. Senior running back Evan Wyrsch had a pair of touchdown runs, the second of which from one yard out gave Southern a 21-14 lead with 6:06 left in the game. Senior Justin Silva ran for a game-high 61 yards.

Following Southern’s go-ahead score to take a 21-14 lead, Central responded with a 79-yard drive to pull within a point on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Vezzosi to Yates. However, the extra point hit off the left upright, leaving Southern ahead, 21-20. Central’s defense then forced a three-and-out and got the ball back at its own 32 with 1:39 left in the game.

 

Toms River South 30, Lacey 7

Senior running back Jake Henehan ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries to lead the Indians (3-2. 2-1) past the Lions (0-4, 0-2).

Senior quarterback Gio Torres threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior Joe Pompilio and senior running back Damir Nelson ran for 33 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

 

Brick 37, Toms River East 13

Junior quarterback James Hirtes ran for 96 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, threw for 50 yards and a touchdown and kicked a 21-yard field goal, while junior Germaine Rice Jr. had a touchdown run and pick-6 to send the Dragons (2-2, 2-1) to a victory over the Raiders (1-4, 0-3).

Hirtes had a 1-yard touchdown run and a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior Jayden Johnson in the first quarter when Brick took a 14-7 lead. Justin Morgan added a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter as the Dragons took a 21-13 lead into the halftime break.

Hirtes’ field goal extended the lead to 24-13 in the fourth quarter before Rice’s 32-yard touchdown run and 35-yard interception return for a touchdown sealed the win.

Brick ran for 317 yards as a team.

 

Class C North

No. 10 Holmdel 35, No. 6 Wall 14

Sophomore defensive back Michael Todisco returned two interceptions for touchdowns and caught two passes for 80 yards and a touchdown as the Hornets (4-2, 2-1) knocked off the previously undefeated Crimson Knights (4-1, 2-1) for an impressive road victory.

Junior quarterback Jack Cannon completed 13 of 18 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 80 yards on 19 carries. Junior linebacker Peter Berardi recorded a game-high 14 tackles, senior defensive lineman Cipriano Bodnar had 12 tackles and one sack, and senior defensive back Trey Critchley intercepted a pass.

Holmdel struck first on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cannon to Todisco and then went ahead 14-0 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Cannon to junior Alex Reyes with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets stretched their advantage to 21-0 when Todisco returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown with 4:53 left in the opening quarter. Wall got on the board when sophomore quarterback Franny Scaramellino threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to junior Heath Reinhardt early in the second quarter.

Holmdel’s lead grew to 28-7 midway through the third quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by senior Matt Iulo before Todisco returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown with 1:49 left for a 35-7 cushion.

Wall added a late touchdown on a run by Dylan Cohen, who ran for 85 yards on six carries. Senior running back Mason Adam ran for 77 yards on six carries.

 

No. 12 Manalapan 35, No. 7 St. John Vianney 34 (OT)

Senior quarterback Ryan Dougherty threw a touchdown pass to senior wide receiver and homecoming king Justin Troxell, then hit senior tight end Anthony Hammel for the game-winning 2-point conversion as the Braves (3-2, 3-0) delivered the home crowd on Church Lane a sensational overtime victory over the Lacers (3-2, 1-2).

Manalapan now has sole possession of first place in the division after Wall lost to Holmdel.

Dougherty completed 9 of 12 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown and ran for 35 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Nicky Palmieri ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and junior running back Ahsere Woolfolk ran for a team-high 94 yards on 14 carries. Troxell caught three passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore running back Abdul Turay ran for 225 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries in the loss for St. John Vianney. His touchdown run with 56 seconds left in regulation followed by the extra point tied the game at 27. Jahmere James caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and junior quarterback Zach LaBarca completed 13 of 23 passes for 142 yards and a score.

 

Raritan 37, Manasquan 24

John Jeleniewski and Xavier Nunes each ran for over 100 yards as part of a 410-yard rushing night for the Rockets (1-3, 1-2), who bulldozed the visiting Warriors (2-3, 0-3) to pick up their first win of the season.

Jeleniewski ran for 122 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries and Nunes ran for a game-high 158 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run. Matt Jones added 60 yards rushing and a touchdown on five carries, Jack McGreevy kicked a 28-yard field goal and Ty Konewicz ran for 54 yards on just two carries. Jones also had a sack on defense.

Junior running back Ace Etienne ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead Manasquan. Etienne scored on an 80-yard run in the first quarter and a 42-yard run in the second quarter. J.D. Teza caught a 41-yard touchdown pass form Matt Antonucci and Dylan Lu added a 15-yard touchdown run. Etienne also had a strong day on defense with a sack and three tackles for loss.

 

Class C South

Manchester 24, Barnegat 12

Senior quarterback Aidan Lunn completed 6 of 9 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown and ran for 87 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries when the Hawks (4-1, 3-0) downed the Bengals (3-2, 2-1) to move one step closer to their first division title in program history.

Senior running back Avery Phillips ran for 76 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and senior wideout M.J. Goins caught a 36-yard touchdown pass. Senior kicker Ian Spicer connected on a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Manchester a 10-6 lead at the break.

Senior running back Myquan Rush-Esdaile ran for 105 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for Barnegat. Senior Johnnel Johnson had a 3-yard touchdown run.

 

Pinelands 40, Monmouth 0

Senior running back Jaimin Parkinson ran for a career-high 237 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries as the Wildcats (2-2, 2-1) rolled up 401 yards rushing to sprint past the Falcons (0-5, 0-3).

Parkinson had a pair of 29-yard touchdown runs plus a 2-yard touchdown run en route to his third career 200-yard game. Junior Eric Kobilnyk ran for 93 yards and a touchdown (62 yards) on five carries and junior Ismael Jacquez scored on a 13-yard run for his first varsity touchdown. Senior quarterback Ty Kline tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Shayne Gordon.

Sophomore linebacker Jamie Jenkins recorded his first varsity interception to highlight the shutout on defense.

 

Class D North

Point Beach 22, Asbury Park 12

Senior running back Liam Brosnan ran for a career-high 182 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and intercepted a pass on defense as the Garnet Gulls (3-1, 2-1) defeated the Blue Bishops (0-3, 0-2) on a night when the program honored former player and Jersey Mike’s founder Peter Cancro.

Senior running back Ryan Scannell ran for 64 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and sophomore defensive back Danny Cavanaugh had an interception.

Class A North

No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 42, No. 11 Marlboro 0

Senior quarterback Frankie Williams completed 10 of 12 passes for 151 yards and four touchdowns and sophomore running back Jordan Mosenthine ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries to power the Caseys (3-2, 2-0) to a dominant win over the Mustangs (2-3, 2-2).

Junior wide receiver Daniel Zabora had touchdown receptions of 35 and 10 yards, junior wideout Chris Gibson caught a 33-yard touchdown pass, and freshman Jason Berecsky hauled in a 23-yard scoring pass. Berescky finished with four receptions for 50 yards to lead the team in receiving.

Senior linebacker Patrick McGonnell recorded 10 tackles, 1 sack and 4 tackles for loss, senior linebacker Gutridge had 10 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss and a forced fumble, and senior defensive lineman Carmine Tartamella posted three tackles for loss. Junior Gavin Richter pulled down an interception.

 

Long Branch 28, Colts Neck 20

Senior quarterback Quentin Fisher ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries, including a 48-yarder in the fourth quarter that locked up the Green Wave’s victory over the Cougars (0-5, 0-4) to give Ben Wooley his first win as Long Branch head coach.

Fisher also threw for 137 yards and a touchdown. Havier Gonzalez had four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown and Zahaki McDonald ran for 77 yards on 18 carries and had one reception for 20 yards. Senior linebacker Joseph Corley had two tackles for loss and senior Tyler Taylor had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Javier Guzman made a team-high 12 tackles.

Junior running back Bryson Royal ran for a career-high 176 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries and junior Evan Kish ran for 48 yards and a touchdown on two carries for Colts Neck.

 

Class B North

Middletown North 35, Freehold 7

Junior quarterback Owen Robson completed 6 of 8 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns and senior Brian O’Donnell found the end zone twice as the Lions (4-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten with a victory over the Colonials (1-4, 0-3).

O’Donnell caught a 20-yard touchdown pass and ran for an 18-yard touchdown. Jack Viola caught three passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, senior running back Shane Volante ran for 61 yards and a touchdown and sophomore Matt Belenko added a touchdown run.

O’Donnell also helped lead the defense with three tackles for loss while Brody Tooker had two tackles for loss.

Dominic Romeo threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Damier Lester for Freehold’s touchdown. Senior My’King Artis recorded a career-high 21 tackles.

 

Class C South

Jackson Liberty 38, Lakewood 6

 

Class D North

Shore 41, Keansburg 0

Senior running back Brendan O’Brien ran for three touchdowns and senior quarterback Josh Moeller went 4-for-4 for 101 yards and two touchdowns as the Blue Devils’ (4-0, 3-0) division domination continued with a victory over the Titans (0-5, 0-3).

Braden Miller and Tommy Schroeder each caught touchdown passes and John Mazzacco returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Shore has allowed just seven points all season and has outscored Class D North opponents 132-0 in three games.

 

New Egypt 20, Keyport 6

Junior running back Eddie Novatkowski rushed for a career-high 181 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to power the Warriors (4-0, 4-0) past the Red Raiders (0-5, 0-3) for their first 4-0 start since 2011.

Novatkowski had touchdown runs of 3 and 8 yards in the second quarter and a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
