Junior Nate Stryker delivered the lone goal of the game in the 32nd minute and the Mustangs (1-0) and goalkeeper Ryan Wheeler finished off the shutout to score an opening-day win over the five-time defending Class A North champion Mariners (0-2).
Stryker warded off a pair of defenders to create a lane for his left-footed strike, which he slipped past his cousin and Toms River North goalkeeper, Gavin Stryker. On the other end of the field, Wheeler made four saves while his defense and the Mustangs midfield — led by Nate’s twin brother, Nick — kept the Mariners attack in check.
The win over Toms River North is the first for Brick Memorial since 2017 and it snapped a nine-match winless streak against the Mariners which included two draws.
