Jakari Spence pours in 51 to lead Sterns Trailer; Jared Kimbrough paces ACI/Robin’s Nest with 37

MANASQUAN — Sterns Trailer made a strong statement Wednesday night that they are very much still in contention for their 4th straight Jersey Shore Basketball League championship as they were able to defeat the WCT Warriors 126-112 to push themselves into a three-way tie for second place as they improved to 4-2 on the season. In the nightcap, ACI/Robin’s Nest weathered an early storm to secure a 113-101 win over Ortho-NJ and get themselves back to the .500 mark at 3-3.

Jacksonville point guard Jakari Spence put together a massive performance in the win for Sterns. Spence was able to consistently get to the rim throughout the game as he dropped 51 points on an incredibly efficient 22/34 shooting from the field.

“I think I’m just sticking to my work and it’s all paying off” said Spence “All the work I’ve been putting in all summer and for all these years has been paying off. I’m happy I was able to put on a performance.”

After trailing during the first quarter by double digits, Sterns came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter as they embarked on a 25-1 run at the start of the period. Spence had a massive second quarter which helped him finish the first half with 28 points on 12-16 shooting from the field.

“I walked in a spot and let off 50 today,” said Spence playfully repeating what former Seton Hall All-American guard Myles Powell said on Instagram after his 52 point game in a cameo appearance for ACI/Robin’s Nest in a win over Spence’s Sterns Trailer team last week.

Spence played three seasons at Monmouth but transferred to Jacksonville for his final season of eligibility. At Jacksonville, Spence averaged 8.4 points along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists as the starting point guard.

Spence was not alone in the win as he was aided by former 5-star Villanova recruit and Ranney superstar Bryan Antoine. Antoine scored 22 points on an efficient 10/15 from the field to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and a block.

“Antoine is one of the best athletes I’ve played with,” said Spence “I just throw it wherever and he goes and gets it.”

Former Florida Atlantic and Connecticut guard Jalen Gaffney also had a strong game in the victory with 18 points on 8/16 from the field in addition to 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

Monmouth University wing Jinup Dobuol played well in defeat for the WCT Warriors as he scored 35 points on 15/28 from the field and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Former Manasquan guard Ryan Frauenheim made his JSBL debut suiting up for WCT. Frauenheim, who now plays for Babson College, scored 13 points in his first game. His former Manasquan teammate Griffin Linstra added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

In the nightcap, ACI/Robin’s Nest was able to win back-to-back games for the first time all season as they defeated Ortho-NJ 113-101.

It certainly was not an ideal start for ACI as they found themselves down 12-0 to start the game. However, they collected themselves, went on a 13-3 run and were able to take the lead by the end of the first quarter. They would lead for the remainder of the game.

Jared Kimbrough (Hartford/Neptune) played a big role in their come from behind victory. He scored their first basket to break the ice and kept pouring it on all night as he finished with 37 points on 15/21 from the field with 24 of those points coming in the second half.

“I knew I had to be more aggressive going into halftime, so I made that a priority,” said Kimbrough.

In addition to Kimbrough’s 37, ACI was aided by Gio Panzini (Cornell/St. Rose) who registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Samier Kinsler (Glenville State) who added 15 points.

While the win only put ACI in 5th place, they have everything in front of them as they are only one game behind the three second place teams.

Ortho-NJ had three 20-point scorers in the game. George Papas (Monmouth) led the team with 29 points and Doug Edert (Saint Peter’s/Bryant) and Trevis Wyche (Saint Peter’s) followed with 22 points and 20 points respectively. Ortho is still looking for their first win of the season.
