Randolph 9, No. 7 Jackson Memorial 6 (8 Innings)
Jackson Memorial scored three runs on back-to-back two-out errors by Randolph in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Mason Wilson bailed out the Rams with a tie-breaking RBI double in the top of the eighth inning as they topped the Jaguars in a wild, extra-inning affair.
Randolph added two more runs in the top of the eighth on bases-loaded walks.
Jackson Osmond and Brady Wendell set up Jackson Memorial’s seventh-inning comeback with a single and walk, respectively, to lead off the inning. Both runners advanced on a ground out. Randolph starter Matt Paladino recorded a strikeout for the second out, but the Rams could not cleanly field a ground ball by Angel Cruz that scored Osmond to make it 6-4, Randolph.
Cruz then stole second base and Sean Hallihan hit another ground ball that led to an error, allowing both Wendell and Cruz to score the tying runs.
Randolph jumped out to a commanding lead with four runs in the top of the first inning, aided by a dropped fly ball with two out that scored the third and fourth runs of the inning. Jackson Memorial responded with three runs in the bottom of the first — one on an RBI single by Wendell, the second on an error, and the third on a sacrifice fly by Cruz.
Jackson Memorial to Appeal NJSIAA for Pitch-Count Violation
Jackson Memorial will be appealing the NJSIAA for a forfeit victory due to a pitch-count violation, according to Jackson Memorial coach Pat George. Paladino pitched seven complete innings and Jackson Memorial’s pitch chart — both by hand in the dugout and via the GameChanger app — had Paladino at 113 pitches after recording the second out of the seventh inning. Paladino went on to throw nine more pitches in the inning before being replaced to start the bottom of the eighth. Randolph’s count in the dugout is not clear, but the team’s GameChanger account had the same count (122) as Jackson Memorial’s did through seven innings.
Per NJSIAA rules, a pitcher is permitted to throw no more than 110 pitches in a single game, but is allowed to finish pitching to a batter should his 110th pitch be thrown in the middle of an at-bat. According to the GameChanger feed for both teams, Paladino was at 108 pitches after recording the first out of the seventh inning and upon striking out the next batter, he was at 113. Randolph led, 6-3, with Jackson Memorial runners on second and third base with two out when Paladino should have been required to exit the game as a pitcher, Jackson Memorial contends. The Jaguars scored the three tying runs in the seventh with Paladino allegedly pitching beyond his limit.
