Class A North

No. 4 Ranney 4, No. 2 Red Bank Catholic 2

Sophomores Justin Kaufman, Nate Fuller and Brody Mauro each came up big for Ranney at the plate, on the mound and on the bases as the Panthers scored twice in the seventh inning on the way to handing the Caseys their first loss of the season.

Justin Kaufman struck out seven in taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning and hit the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the seventh to score Mauro from third. Mauro led off the seventh with a ground-rule double over the rightfield fence and stole third base before scoring on Kaufman’s double. Kaufman later scored on the tail-end of a double-steal to make it 4-2.

Mauro then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to nail down the save, working around a two-out single by Red Bank Catholic catcher Aiden Funk.

Fuller earned the win in relief by pitching a scoreless sixth inning and also drove in Ranney’s first run with an RBI single off RBC starter Ryan Prior to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Fuller then stole second base and upon stealing third, he scored when Funk’s throw skipped into leftfield for a 2-0 Ranney lead.

RBC tied the game in the fifth, with first baseman Dylan Passo breaking up the no-hit bid with a single through the left side after centerfielder Miles Nessan led off with a walk. Shortstop Max Dantoni sacrificed the runners up a base and Funk delivered a two-run single to right-centerfield, taking second on a bobble in the outfield.

Prior lasted six innings and 92 pitches for RBC, striking out 11 while walking only two despite starting the game with a leadoff walk.

No. 8 Middletown North 7, Marlboro 5

Alipio Figueroa hit a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning and catcher Mike Hallard delivered the winning hit in the form of a tie-breaking two-run double in the top of the seventh as the Lions rallied for a road win over the Mustangs.

Left-hander Gabe Ahlemeyer took a shutout into the fifth inning, but surrendered three of the five unearned runs scored by Marlboro in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Mustangs a 5-3 lead. Ahlemeyer allowed two hits, walked two and hit a batter while striking out eight in taking the no-decision. Louis Romeo pitched the final two innings, striking out four and allowing one hit to earn his first varsity win on the mound.

Both Ahlemeyer and Romeo contributed to the scoring as well. Middletown North jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth thanks to three doubles in the inning. Ryan Clark started the rally with a double and scored on a double by Danny Sigler. Ahlemeyer then knocked Sigler in with the third double of the frame.

Romeo singled home a run in the top of the fifth to make it 3-0, with Figueroa setting up the scoring chance by doubling to lead off the frame. Figueroa finished 2-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBI and Hallard was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Losing pitcher Chris Joy singled in a pair of runs in the five-run Marlboro fifth and Jack Rivlin delivered a two-run double in the rally — one of his two doubles in the game.

Class A South

No. 7 Jackson Memorial 4, Wall 3

Catcher Tyler Huzzy hit a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and shortstop Jackson Osmond scored the winning run with two out in the seventh on an error on the infield, giving the Jaguars a come-from-behind, walk-off win over the Crimson Knights.

Charlie Buchinsky led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Huzzy followed with a two-run jack over the leftfield fence to even the score, 3-3. Osmond then singled and stole second base to put the winning run in scoring position. Dan Hennessy took over on the mound and recorded two outs, with Osmond reaching third base.

Angel Cruz then put a ground ball in play that Wall could not field cleanly and Osmond scored the winning run.

Wall jumped on top on the first varsity home run by freshman Luke Dana — a solo shot leading off the top of the third. The Crimson Knights added an unearned run in the third against Jackson Memorial left-hander Matt Colaneri and made it 3-0 in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Davis Harr.

Southern 3, No. 3 Toms River East 2

Tyler McLeod and Ryan Dietrich hit back-to-back, two-out, RBI singles in the first inning and Nick Nitahara hit the deciding RBI single in the fourth in support of starter Trevor Kerlin, who went the distance to pitch the Rams past the previously-unbeaten Raiders.

Lucas Melton drew Toms River East one run closer in the bottom of the fifth, when the junior drew a walk, stole both second and third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Ferrara to pull the Raiders within 3-2.

Kerlin responded by retiring the next seven batters he faced to finish off his first career complete game and victory at the varsity level.

No. 5 Point Beach 6, Point Boro 4

Sophomore Carson Pfeifer hit a tie-breaking two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Bennett Moberg pitched four innings of relief for his Shore-leading third win of the season as the unbeaten Garnet Gulls swept their regular-season series vs. the crosstown rival Panthers.

Pfeifer also hit a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the third inning and Point Beach took a 4-3 lead later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Brody Powers. Point Boro pulled even in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Fin Czaplinski — the lone run allowed by Moberg during his outing.

Dan Storch went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles for Point Beach, including an RBI double to push Point Beach’s lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Dan Lubach staked Point Beach to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single.

James Lockwood got Point Boro on the board with an RBI single in the top of the second and the Panthers grabbed their only lead of the game on an RBI single by Matt Lokerson in the top of the third to make it 3-2.

Class C North

Freehold Boro 8, Red Bank 6

Noah Ochojski delivered a go-ahead two-run single as part of Freehold Boro’s three-run third inning, then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to nail down his second save of the season as the Colonials won a back-and-forth battle over the Bucs on the road.

Ochojski’s two-run knock gave Freehold Boro a 7-6 lead and catcher Tyler Kuncken tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single that capped the scoring. Winning pitching Nick Lynch fired a scoreless sixth inning to cap his two scoreless frames before turning the ball over to Ochojski, who pitched a one-two-three seventh on just eight pitches.

Red Bank took the lead three different times in the game, with Gavin Smith manufacturing a run in the fourth for the Bucs’ final lead. Smith drew a walk, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Jack Forsyth and scored on an RBI ground out by catcher Nick Walker.

Will Marziarz gave Red Bank a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the second on a tie-breaking two-run double, to which Freehold Boro responded with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game, 5-5 — highlighted by an RBI single by Colonials starting pitcher Aamir Haniff.

Nick Russo staked Freehold Boro to a 1-0 lead by leading off the top of the first with a single, stealing second base, heading to third on a ground out by Ochojski and scoring on an RBI ground out by Kuncken. Red Bank responded with three in the bottom of the first — all with two out. August Ray tied the game with an RBI infield single and Jacob Pouso made it 3-1 with a two-run double.

Freehold Boro pulled even, 3-3, on an error that scored two runs in the top of the second.
