Monmouth County Tournament

Preliminary Round

(14) Marlboro 12, (19) Long Branch 6

(21) St. Rose 8, (12) Monmouth 6 (8 Innings)

Lucas Ferlise broke the tie with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning and winning pitcher Peter Nolan drew the deciding bases-loaded walk before closing out a preliminary-round win for the Purple Roses over the Falcons.

Nolan came on in relief to start the bottom of the seventh inning and walked in the tying run with one out, but responded with back-to-back strikeouts to strand the winning run on third base. He later drew the first of two consecutive back-to-back walks with the bases loaded for St. Rose in the top of the eighth, with Jason Spallin also working an RBI walk to push St. Rose’s lead to 8-5.

St. Rose advances to play No. 5 Middletown North in the first round of the MCT.

Red Bank scored runs on an error, a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk during a three-run sixth inning and held on to top the Blue Devils, advancing to the MCT first round to play at No. 4 Colts Neck.

Joe Henry walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gavin Smith, who reached safely on the bunt thanks to the first Shore error of the inning. Jack Forsyth then laid down another sacrifice bunt and Shore’s second straight error fielding a bunt allowed Henry to score the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Red Bank lead. Smith then scored on a wild pitch and Chris Doody worked a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to cap the scoring.

No. 9 Jackson Memorial 3, No. 6 Toms River East 2

Matt Colaneri struck out a career-high 11 in pitching a complete game and the Jaguars salvaged a regular-season split with the Raiders after a narrow loss to Toms River East on Monday.

Jackson Memorial took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI ground out by Sean Hallihan and an RBI single by Charlie Buchinsky and held that lead until the top of the sixth. In the Jackson Memorial sixth, shortstop Jackson Osmond delivered a two-out RBI double inside the third-base bag to give his team a necessary insurance run and a 3-1 lead.

Toms River East mounted an immediate threat in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles from Dan Nafziger and Lucas Melton to lead off the inning. Colaneri came back with a strikeout and an infield pop-up was one strike away from finishing off the win when Matt Ferrara punched an RBI single through the middle to make the score 3-2 and move the tying run into scoring position. Colaneri got back to a two-strike count and this time, he finished the game with a swinging strike three.

Toms River North 4, No. 10 Central 3 (8 Innings)

Jason Verderrosa extended the game with a game-tying RBI single with two out in the bottom of the seventh and the Mariners won it on an error in the bottom of the eighth to hand the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season.

Central’s Vinny Tremeterra retired the first two batters of the bottom of the eighth inning before Brendan Bush started the winning rally with a two-out single. Dominic Ostroman then lifted a fly ball to centerfield that was dropped, allowing Bush to score all the way from first to win the game.

Toms River North nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh, with Ian St. Luce singling into leftfield with the winning run on second base. Verderrosa attempted to score the winning run, but Rob Bollentino threw him out at home plate to end the threat and move the game into the eighth inning.
