CBA 9, Brick Memorial 4

Colin Hoverter keyed a go-ahead rally in the sixth with a go-ahead two-run single and Will Fahey added a run-scoring hit in both the sixth and seventh innings as the Colts came alive at the plate in the final two innings in an opening-day win over the Mustangs.

Hoverter had an eventful day in the field and at the plate, where he reached base in all four of his plate appearances. In the top of the fifth inning, he smacked a single through the middle to scored two runs and give the Colts a 3-2 lead, which offset a two-run error committed by Hoverter in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brick Memorial grabbed the 2-1 advantage when Hoverter made an errant throw to second base in search of a force-out, which enabled Brick Memorial runners to score from second and first on the play.

The error was one of three on the day for Hoverter at shortstop, but he also made two key plays to get CBA out of trouble in the fifth inning, including a dazzling pick on a hard-hit, one-hopper by Brick Memorial rightfielder Jaxon Figueroa.

Fahey, meanwhile, struck out in each of his first two at bats vs. Brick Memorial starter Brayden Nalducci, then feasted on the bullpen. He led off the top of the fifth with a single and after that went for not, he followed Hoverter’s two-run single in the sixth with a two-out RBI double to right-center that made the score 4-2. Fahey then capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.

Sophomore Alex Fiore singled home the fourth run of the sixth inning for CBA, which proved to be the deciding run. Fiore also clubbed an opposite-field double to the rightfield warning track in the top of the first and scored on an RBI single by third baseman Dan Russo for a 1-0 CBA lead.

First baseman Jared Matejicka jumpstarted CBA’s sixth-inning with a long double to leftfield and later chipped in an RBI single in the four-run seventh. Nick Pascucci got in on the action with a pinch-hit, two-run single that extended CBA’s lead to 8-4 in the seventh.

Brick Memorial responded to falling behind, 5-2, by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Dan Golembewski smoked two singles in the game and scored on a wild pitch after the second of his singles in the sixth. Catcher Joe McGlynn then followed with an eight-pitch at-bat that ended with an RBI single into centerfield, cutting CBA’s lead to 5-4.

After Banick tied the game, Point Beach took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Carson Pfeiffer.

Manasquan 4, Holmdel 3

Tristan Condon tied the game with an RBI double and J.D. Teza followed with a long game-winning to right field to give the Warriors a dramatic, walk-off victory over the Hornets to open their season.

Keegan Hertel started the winning rally by dropping down a bunt and reaching first on a fielder error. Catcher Connor Voelksen followed with a clean single to left and gave way to courtesy runner Jake McDaid at first base, with Hertel holding at second base. Condon then shot a ground ball through the left side to score Hertel with the tying run and eliminated the force at second base by advancing to second base on the throw home from the outfield as McDaid took third.

Teza then shot the ball out to rightfield and when it dropped, McDaid strolled home with the winning run as the final four Manasquan hitters reached to finish off the winning rally.

Holmdel took the lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double by centerfielder Nick Rakoski. Sophomore right-hander Logan Cleveland struck out four in two innings of relief to earn his first career varsity win for Manasquan.
