Class A North

No. 4 Red Bank Catholic 10, No. 10 Manalapan 0 (5 Innings)

Jake Frankel drove in five runs on three run-scoring hits — two of them for extra-bases — and the Caseys handled the Braves in five behind a dominant first outing for senior right-hander Ryan Prior.

Frankle opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first inning and added to the lead with an RBI triple in the bottom of the third. Catcher Aiden Funk led off the third with a triple and scored on an RBI single by rightfielder Charlie Stumberger before Frankel made it 4-0 with his RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Cannon.

Funk made it 7-0 with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth and Frankel belted his first homer of the season for a 9-0 lead two batters later. The Caseys ended the game with an RBI single by Funk in the bottom of the fifth.

None of the first 10 Manalapan batters put the ball in play vs. Prior, who struck out eight of those first 10 while issuing two walks.

No. 1 CBA 9, No. 3 Ranney 6

Senior catcher Danny Tsimbinos drove in a pair of runs, including one on one of CBA’s four RBI doubles, and the Colts held on to beat the Panthers in a battle of two of the Shore’s top three teams in the Shore Sports Network rankings to open the season.

Tsimbinos and classmate Dan Russo cracked back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the first to open the scoring and Tsimbinos drove in another with an RBI single to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the second.

Shortstop Colin Hoverter roped an RBI double and scored on an error to push CBA’s lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the third. Hoverter reached in his first three plate appearances on Monday after reaching in all four of his plate appearances in Saturday’s season-opening win at Brick Memorial, giving him a reached-base streak of seven to open the season before he finally flew out to leftfield in his final at-bat.

After Ranney cut its deficit to 6-5, CBA added on in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by sophomore Dylan Reynholds on a 1-2 count. The Colts capped their second straight nine-run game to open the season with an RBI double by Jared Matejicka.

Ranney broke through against CBA left-hander Danny DiTullio in the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Curt Chropuvka and sophomore shortstop Ricky Lopez. In his first high school baseball game, Lopez — an LSU commit who did not play high school baseball as a freshman while attending school in New York — slammed a double off DiTullio in his first at-bat, skipped a single through the middle to plate a run in at-bat No. 2, and finished his day with a sacrifice fly for Ranney’s final run.

The Panthers drew within a run and chased DiTullio during a three-run fourth inning. An error and a bunt single started the rally and sophomore Robbie Wrobel delivered the big hit in the inning with a double down the leftfield line to plate a run. A second run scored on a passed ball on a strikeout by DiTullio and the third crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Shane Langan recorded the final two outs of the fourth and combined with junior Dan Pardini to escape trouble in the sixth. Langan gave up a single to Justin Kauffman, followed by a pair of walks to load the bases with none out and CBA holding a 8-5 lead. He then fell behind Chropuvka, 3-0, before coming back to strike him out. Pardini came on a got Lopez on a sacrifice fly to centerfield and ended the threat with a strikeout.

A pop-up dropped in to open the top of the seventh, by Pardini bounced back by setting down the next three batters to lock down the save.

Middletown South 10, Marlboro 8

Patrick Dempsey smashed three run-scoring singles during a three-hit, five-RBI game — including an RBI single in a game-turning, three-run rally in the fourth inning that helped the Eagles out-slug the Mustangs.

Dempsey picked up RBI singles in both the first and fourth innings, then capped a four-run fifth with a two-run single that put Middletown South ahead, 9-3. Jack Concordia preceded him with an RBI double to stretch the Middletown South lead to 7-3.

In the fourth, Concordia drove in the tying run on an RBI groundout — the lone out he made in a 4-for-5 game with three doubles — to tie the game, 3-3. Shortstop Brendan Sliva gave Marlboro the lead for good with an RBI single into leftfield for a 4-3 lead and Dempsey made it 5-3 with his second RBI single of the game.

Marlboro took the lead on three consecutive run-scoring at-bats in the bottom of the third inning. Chris Joy got the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single and catcher Gavin McCarthy tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI groundout. Shortstop Jack Rivlin then gave Marlboro the 3-2 lead with an RBI double to plate Joy.

Junior Peter DeNicola struck out five of the seven batters he faced in 2 1/3 perfect relief innings to earn the win and stand out among the five Middletown South pitchers who took the mound in Monday’s opener. Senior Chris Daley came on in the bottom of the seventh with Marlboro runners on second and third and Middletown South leading, 10-6, and hit a batter before allowing a two-run single to Joe Kelly that made it 10-8. Daley then buckled down and retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.

Class B North

Matawan 5, Howell 2

Mark Fanelli sparked a three-run second inning and drove in another run in the fourth in support of winning pitcher Jayce Thoroughman as the Huskies began their Class B North title defense with a win over the Rebels.

Fanelli doubled home a run in the second inning and scored on a wild pitch before later knocking in another run on an RBI single in the fourth. Thoroughman tacked on an insurance run with an RBI double that capped the scoring.

Howell scored its runs on a pair of extra-base hits in the top of the third inning — the first of which was an inside-the-park home run by Vinny Agnello. Catcher Brody Loch followed with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Todisco.

No. 6 Ocean 2, Monmouth 1

Hayden Ansell and Ben Robinson hit RBI singles in consecutive innings in the fourth and fifth and senior right-hander Jack Kelly carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Robinson shut the door on an opening-day win for the Spartans over the Falcons and All-Shore ace Collin Denton.

Matt Richter singled with one out tin the fifth and scored on Ansell’s two-out RBI single to open the scoring. In the following inning, Denton hit centerfielder Will Walsh with two out and Walsh made him pay by stealing second and scoring on another two-out RBI single — this time by Robinson to make it 2-0.

Monmouth broke up the no-hit bid and cut its deficit in half in the sixth, starting with a leadoff triple by centerfielder Will Theobald, who then beat a throw to the plate on a ground ball by shortstop Beckett Langdon. Denton sacrificed Langdon to second base and catcher Bobby Davidson greeted Robinson with a double, but Ansell fired in throw to the infield from right field and the relay nabbed Langdon at home plate, keeping the potential tying run off the board.

In the top of the seventh, Monmouth mounted a threat with a pair of one-out singles by freshman Donovan Hicks and Dom Golembieski, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Mason Bussem and a walk to Theobald to load the bases. Robinson then coaxed a tapper back to the mound to end the game.
