Regular Season

Class A North

Holmdel 3, No. 2 Manasquan 2 (OT)

Junior Dom Poli finished the golden goal in the 95th minute and the Hornets (5-3-1, 2-2-0) came back to beat the Warriors (5-3, 1-2), who played a man down for the final 28 minutes.

Trailing 2-1 in the 72nd minute, Holmdel earned a free kick 40 yards away from the goal and Manasquan goalkeeper Dylan Morris punched Kieran Hynes’s free kick away from the goal, but senior Tyler Gravier immediately headed the ball back at the exposed net. With the ball sailing toward the goal, Manasquan senior Brandon Kunz desperately punched the ball away and was red-carded for an intentional handball in the box.

Holmdel senior Stepan Kapranov buried the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game, 2-2.

Manasquan battled its way to overtime playing with 10 men on the field and Kunz unavailable the rest of the way. In the first overtime period, Holmdel created two scoring chances. Midway through the period, Kapranov played a back-heel pass to Nate Koenig, who blasted a top-of-the-18 shot just over the crossbar. In the final seconds of the first overtime, Hynes blasted a 45-yard shot that Morris saved from tucking into the upper left corner of the goal.

The Hornets broke through midway through the second overtime period. Junior Luke Farrugia ran the ball down and struck a low shot that Morris saved while diving to his left. The ball hung up near the right side of the box and Poli followed the play close enough to finish on an open net for the game-winner.

Holmdel jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Mike Wojie in the sixth minute. After absorbing a Holmdel barrage over the first six minutes, Manasquan bounced back and scored the equalizer in the 14th. Senior Cooper Daly ripped a low shot off the right post and junior Cruz Farkas headed in a second chance after senior Griffin Linstra played him a cross from right-to-left.

Manasquan grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute on an 18-yard direct kick by senior Cristian Gonzalez after Holmdel was cited for a handball just outside the edge of the 18-yard box.
