Week 7 Awards (Oct. 14 through Oct. 20)
Class A North Player of the Week
Stepan Kapranov, Holmdel
Throughout what was an up-and-down regular season for Holmdel, Kapranov has maintained that he and his team will hit its stride in time for the postseason and the Columbia signee appears ready to deliver. He scored two goals in a 2-1 SCT win over Brick Memorial, then put up a goal and two assists in a 3-1 win over St. John Vianney to carry Holmdel to the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Class A North Honorable Mention: Charlie Butters, Rumson-Fair Haven; Luke D’Angelo, Rumson-Fair Haven; Brandon Kunz, Manasquan; Jake Langella, Marlboro; Thomas Silva Ferreira, Long Branch; Alejandro Flores Lopez, Long Branch; Shane Byrne, Manasquan; Kieran Hynes, Holmdel; Ryan Asadi, CBA; Tyler Borenstein, Howell
Class A Central Player of the Week
Sean Moore, Colts Neck
For all of Moore’s scoring prowess this season, he did not record a hat trick until two games prior to the start of the SCT. He then posted one two games later in the Cougars’ SCT opener, which ended with Colts Neck beating Freehold Township, 4-0, behind Moore’s three goals. The sophomore Moore then backed his brother Kyle’s brace with a goal of his own in an impressive 3-0 Colts Neck win over Manalapan in the SCT round of 16.
Class A Central Honorable Mention: Tom Ekberg, Wall; Josiah Stepney, Middletown North; Kyle Moore, Colts Neck; Robert Keegan, Wall; Ethan Lustig, Manalapan; Jack Cohen, Middletown South
Class A South Player of the Week
Aidan Donnelly, Southern
Class A South had an overall disappointing Shore Conference Tournament, but Donnelly did some major damage before Southern’s run came to an end. The senior scored a hat trick and added an assist in the Rams’ 4-2, come-from-behind win over Raritan in the SCT opening round.
Class A South Honorable Mention: Kaan Zenger, Southern; Luke Bodziak, Toms River East; Jordan Benzon, Central
Class B North Player of the Week
Lucas Renvoize, Ocean
With Ocean missing two starting midfielders due to red cards, the Spartans needed somebody to step up and save them in what was a tight game against surging Red Bank. Enter Renvoize, who scored two goals in the Spartans’ 4-3 win over the Bucs – both of which tied the game after Red Bank grabbed leads at 1-0 and 2-1.
Class B North Honorable Mention: Connor Shaw, Ocean; Anthony Marano, St. John Vianney; Owen Brackett, Raritan; Jadyn DeRosa, Shore; Julian Lemus, Neptune; Mike Faller, Freehold Boro; Bryan Barbosa, Shore
Class B Central Player of the Week
Alex Salvo, Red Bank
Red Bank returned to the Shore Conference Tournament for the first time in 10 years and put on a good show, with Salvo leading the way. The junior scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Neptune in the opening round, then scored the opening goal of the wild, 4-3 loss to Ocean in the round of 16.
Class B Central Honorable Mention: Saeed Torres, Ranney
Class B South Player of the Week
Tanner Grozinski, Lacey
Lacey finds itself in the SCT semifinals for the third time in program history and the first time in 13 years thanks, in large part, to what Grozinski has done in the tournament, including in the quarterfinals this week. Last week, the junior posted a goal and two assists in a 6-1 win over Lacey, then scored two second-half goals to rally the Lions to a 2-2 draw vs. Middletown South, which Lacey won on penalties to advance to the SCT quarterfinals.
Class B South Honorable Mention: Anthony Johnson, Toms River South
Class C South Player of the Week
Max Durazzo, Donovan Catholic
Durazzo powered Donovan Catholic to its best scoring week of the season so far, which ended with the Griffins going 1-1 with a competitive loss to defending Group I champion Shore. The junior scored two goals and assisted the other two in a 4-2 win over New Egypt in the Coaches Cup preliminary round, then scored a goal and added an assist in a 5-3 loss to top-seeded Shore.
Class C South Honorable Mention: Charlie Yuro, Donovan Catholic; Ethan Yllanes, Barnegat
Wild Cards
Charlie Butters, Rumson-Fair Haven
The Bulldogs made two productive trips to Toms River in the first two rounds of the Shore Conference Tournament last week and Butters contributed to the scoring in both. He flicked a header to set up a goal by fellow senior Luke D’Angelo in a 2-1 win over Toms River South. Butters then scored two goals in a 5-1 rout of Toms River North to send the Bulldogs to the SCT quarterfinals.
Tom Ekberg, Wall
While he did not post any clean sheets in the SCT, Ekburg played two outstanding games against dangerous opponents during Wall’s two-round stay in the tournament. He made three dazzling second-half saves – including a penalty kick – to help Wall preserve a 2-1, come-from-behind win over Middletown North, then stood on his head to keep Wall close in a 1-0 loss at three-time defending champion CBA.
Mason Boles, St. John Vianney
The Lancers could not get by Holmdel in the SCT round of 16, but the Lancers had a memorable 2024 SCT that included a straight-up win over CBA in group play and a penalty-shootout win over Marlboro last week. In that result at Marlboro, Boles scored a goal, assisted another and knocked down a penalty kick during the shootout in helping St. John Vianney advance. The junior also assisted Anthony Marano’s goal in the 3-1 loss to Holmdel.
