Defending state champions Southern, Rumson roll to sectional titles
The Shore Conference’s top two public schools were predictably dominant in repeating as wrestling sectional champions on Wednesday night.
In the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 5 sectional final, Southern won the first nine bouts and cruised to a 51-18 victory over Washington Township to win its seventh straight sectional championship and 18th overall. The two-time defending Group 5 state champion Rams are now tied with Brick Memorial for the most sectional titles in Shore Conference history.
Junior Attila Vigilante (144), sophomore Nick Daddona (190), and junior Anthony Mason (113) won by fall for Southern while senior Wyatt Stout (157), sophomore Levi Foote (175), and freshman Cade Collins delivered technical falls. Senior Sam Pari (132), freshman Vincent Esposito (150), and senior Noah Fontana (165) added wins by major decision and seniors Scottie Sari (138) and Sean Dupnak (215) won by decision as the Rams secured bonus points in nine of their 11 victories.
Southern (16-3) is the strong favorite to win its third straight state title and will wrestle North Jersey Section 1 champion Passaic Tech in the Group 5 semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. The other semifinal pits Central Jersey champion Monroe against North 2 winner Bridgewater-Raritan. The winners will meet in the Group 5 final on Sunday at Rutgers University.
In an all-Shore Central Jersey Group 2 title match, reigning overall Group 2 champion Rumson-Fair Haven pinned its way to a 48-28 victory over Wall to claim its second straight and overall sectional title. The Bulldogs won by fall or forfeit in all eight of their victories with Cole Pangborn (165), Luke Dougherty (175), Conor Delaney (215), Eamon Fry (113), Elijah Bayne (126), and Joaquin Duque (132) securing pins and state champion Sonny Amato (150) and state qualifier Matt Smith (285) receiving forfeits.
Rumson is now 26-1 with its only defeat coming to Christian Brothers Academy. The Bulldogs are the heavy favorite to repeat as Group 2 champs and will host either Caldwell or Middle Township in the Group 2 semifinals on Friday. If Lower Cape May defeats Middle Township in the South Jersey Group 2 final, Rumson will wrestle Caldwell. If Middle Township wins, the Panthers will head to Ridge Road to face RFH. The winners will meet in the Group 2 final on Sunday at Rutgers.
