NJSIAA Tournament – Sectional Semifinals

 

South Jersey Group 4

(2) Southern 10, (3) Eastern 8

Senior midfielder Joe Kessler scored a team-high three goals and senior goalie AJ Mattern made 11 saves when the Rams used a four-goal surge in the second quarter to take the lead for good and defeat the Vikings to advance to the South Group 4 sectional final.

Tied 2-2 after the first quarter, senior midfielder Chase Huggard scored the first of his game-high four goals to give Eastern (12-7) a 3-2 lead. Southern (15-5) responded with four straight goals by Kessler (two), freshman midfielder Niko Iliescu and sophomore midfielder Ryan Sininsky.

The Rams led 6-4 at halftime but had their lead trimmed to one when Huggard scored early in the third quarter. Kessler completed his hat trick to re-establish the two-goal lead and sophomore attackman Shea O’Donnell scored off a rebound of a shot by sophomore attackman Cash McVey to make it 8-5. Eastern closed the gap to two goals three times in the fourth quarter, but Mattern made some clutch saves, the defense delivered timely turnovers and Sininsky and McVey scored to half Eastern’s comeback attempt.

Southern will face top-seeded Kingsway in the sectional final, which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10 at Kingsway. The Dragons defeated Washington Township in the semifinals to improve to 21-0. They are the only undefeated team in New Jersey. Southern and Kingsway played late in the regular season with the Dragons holding off the Rams for a 6-5 win.

Southern has won four sectional titles in program history (2013, 2014, 2021, 2022).

 

South Jersey Group 3

(2) Shawnee 16, (3) Toms River East 5

 

South Jersey Group 2

(1) Manasquan 17, (4) Allentown 3

Senior attackmen Ryan Aldi and Brandon Kunz combined for 15 points and senior defenseman Parker Harms scored a career-high four goals as the Warriors (17-4) dominated the Redbirds (13-5) to reach their ninth straight sectional final.

Aldi scored a game-high five goals and added two assists while Kunz scored four goals and delivered four assists for a game-high eight points. Harms added an assist to complete a day in which he posted career-bests in goals and points. Senior midfielder Kai Donahue tallied two goals and one assist, senior LSM James Caddott had a goal and two assists, and freshman Casey Mahoney scored once.

Senior goalie Pat Loxley made 12 saves to earn the win while sophomore MJ Femenella made eights saves and junior Thomas Canning made three saves.

Manasquan will host Wall in the South Group 2 sectional final on Tuesday.

 

(2) Wall 14, (3) Ocean City 7

Junior midfielder Patrick Freud scored four first-half goals and finished with five goals and three assists as the Crimson Knights jumped out to an 8-0 lead and rolled to a victory over the Red Raiders to reach the sectional final.

Senior midfielder Michael Hoarle continued his stellar season with four goals, two assists and seven ground balls, while senior attackman Jackson Lemongelli delivered three goals and two assists. Senior goalie Braeden Buckley made 14 saves, junior attackman Wyatt Capro had a goal and an assist, and freshman midfielder Garret Tidwell scored once. Junior midfielder Dylan Cohen won 12 of 19 face-offs and picked up seven ground balls.

Wall will face top-seeded Manasquan in the sectional final on Tuesday. Wall has one sectional title in program history, which came in 2023 when it beat Manasquan 10-9 in the South Group 2 championship.

 

South Jersey Group 1

(5) Glen Ridge 9, (1) Rumson-Fair Haven 8 (OT)

Sophomore goalie Keiller Goodwin made save with 12 seconds left and started a transition clear that ended with junior attackman Stephen Grober scoring the game-winning goal with four seconds left in overtime as the Ridgers stunned the Bulldogs to reach the South Group 1 sectional final.

Glen Ridge led 3-2 after the first quarter and pushed its lead to 5-2 before senior Britt Lumsden scored for Rumson to make it 5-3 at halftime. The Ridgers held off Rumson until the Bulldogs battled back to tie the score 8-8 on goals by Liam Haggerty, Teddy Whitehouse and Luke Lydon.

Lydon’s goal to tie the game came with 5:28 left in regulation. He nearly won the game in the final seconds of the fourth quarter but Goodwin made a stick save on a jump shot from eight yards out.
