Class A North

No. 1 CBA 50, No. 6 Rumson-Fair Haven 44

Sophomore Izayah Cooper scored a team-high 18 points, including five points in the final 42 seconds to help the Colts (16-3, 8-0) turn away another upset bid, this time against the Bulldogs (13-6, 4-4) at home. With the win, CBA clinches no worse than a share of the Class A North championship for the fourth straight year.

Cooper dished out six assists and nabbed three steals before making two crucial offensive plays in the final minute. With Rumson within 45-42 and CBA on a scoreless drought that began at the 6:42 mark of the fourth quarter, Cooper drove to the basket and finished a layup as he was fouled, ending CBA’s scoreless spell at exactly six minutes. Cooper converted the free throw to make it 48-42 with 42 seconds left.

Rumson senior Luke Cruz hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left and Cooper answered with a finish off a feed from senior teammate Connor Andree with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.

Andree posted 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for CBA, while senior Charlie Messano and sophomore Oymere Rene both made an impact with their defense and on the glass while providing a smattering of offense. Messano finished with four points, nine rebounds and two steals and Rene went for five points, six rebounds and two steals. CBA played Thursday’s game without 6-foot-8 junior David Buley due to illness.

Cruz missed Rumson’s first meeting with CBA, which the Colts won, 79-48, in Rumson, and made a major difference on Thursday. The 6-foot-9 senior finished with 19 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Rumson, which cut a 45-36 deficit to 45-42, but made four empty trips down the floor with a chance to tie the game or cut the deficit to one. Cruz’s free throws with 27 seconds left finally ended the drought.

Senior Blake Ahmann also pitched in 16 points and six rebounds for Rumson.
