Monmouth led for most of the game and by as many as 11, which was midway through the second quarter. A layup by Steinmetz in the first two minutes of fourth quarter gave Point Boro a 49-47 edge, its first lead since 3-2 in the opening minute of the game. Two free throws by Hynes put the Panthers up, 51-47, but Monmouth answered with a three-pointer by senior Jaylin Reeves and a layup by classmate Michael Griffin off a feed from Reeves to put Monmouth back up, 52-51.
Cardia hit the first of his two go-ahead baskets in the quarter, a bank shot to make it 53-52. Senior Ahmir Wiggins later gave Monmouth a 54-53 lead with a steal and dunk, but Cardia came right back with a go-ahead three-pointer for a 56-54 Point Boro lead. Junior Logan Conrade knocked down a short jumper to pull Monmouth even with 2:10 left.
Monmouth broke the tie with 1:07 on a pair of free throws by Wiggins, but Steinmetz answered with a drive to the basket that made it 58-58 with 40 seconds left. Wiggins earned another trip to the line with 22 seconds left, but both of his attempts rimmed out. Monmouth gave a foul with seven seconds left and used its last timeout, setting up Point Boro with a chance to win it.
Cardia took the inbounds pass, drove the right baseline and found Hoyle on the left block, where he put up a shot off the glass and in for the game-winner as the final two seconds ticked away.
Wiggins and Griffin each scored 13 points to lead Monmouth’s balanced attack, with Wiggins also handing out seven assists and shooting 5-for-6 from the field. Griffin drained three three-pointers as well.
Conrade added 12 points, senior Charles Tinsley chipped in 10 and Reeves finished with eight points and five assists.

Senior Elijah Ives scored 13 of his 18 points in the third and fourth quarters, while junior Ryan Mahoney chipped in 14 points for Point Beach, with six coming during the triple-overtime session. Senior Jacob Edgecomb also added nine points on three three-pointers for the Garnet Gulls.
Point Beach twice had a chance to win the game prior to the third overtime period, but poor free-throw shooting and clutch play by Southern on offense extended the game in both instances. At the end of regulation, Point Beach led, 65-62, in the final minute but went 1-for-4 from the free-throw line to leave the door open for the Rams to tie the game, which they did when junior Noah Perna was fouled on a putback attempt with no time left on the clock and hit both free throws to tie the game, 66-66.
In the first overtime, it was Mahoney who made the game-saving basket for Point Beach on a drive to the basket to tie the game, 73-73, with 34 seconds left.
In overtime No. 2, Point Beach got a stop with 14 seconds left, but Mahoney missed two free throws and senior Jake Sliwinski powered into the paint for a game-tying finish with four seconds left, sending the game to a third overtime tied, 78-78.
Point Beach moves on to face No. 3 Red Bank Catholic in Thursday’s round of 16 game, which will mark the third time the two teams have met this season. Red Bank Catholic won each of the first two meetings by margins of five and 12.

Middletown South will face another familiar opponent in the round of 16 on Thursday, when they travel to play Class A Central rival and No. 4 seed Howell. Middletown South and Howell split their regular-season series, with Middletown South winning the more recent meeting going away, 84-53.

The two teams traded scores until it was 47-43, at which point Middletown South unleashed a 14-2 run that buried Brick Memorial in an insurmountable 61-45 hole. Gannon scored six points and assisted two baskets by Trimble and a dunk by Wells during the run.
