Senior Brooklynn Bell poured in a game-high 17 points as the Lions (1-0) stifled the Piners (0-1) with a strong defensive effort.
Ocean 39, Long Branch 23
Sophomore forward Emma Burke poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Spartans (1-0) past the Green Wave (0-1) on opening night. Senior center Ava Chebookjian added eight points.
Junior Layla Bland scored a team-high eight points in the loss for the Green Wave.
No. 9 Howell 58, Freehold Township 39
Junior forward Kylee Beam poured in 24 points as the Rebels (1-0) raced past the district rival Patriots (0-1) on opening night. Senior BellaRose Marino added 16 points. Senior Payton Smith chipped in with 10 points including three made three-pointers.
Marlboro 51, Ranney 42
Sophomore guard Mackenzie Klatsky erupted for a game-high 31 points including five three-pointers to lead the Mustangs (1-0) past the Panthers (0-1) on opening night. Junior guard Maddyn Callow added 11 points including three three-pointers.
Sophomore Kayla Matos scored a team-high 13 points in the loss for the Panthers. Sophomore Savannah Jackson added 11 points.
Jackson 63, Toms River North 26
The Jaguars (1-0) raced past the Mariners (0-1) behind a three-headed scoring attack from seniors Isabella Finer, Julianna Old, and Kaylee Ambos. Finer poured in a game-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Old produced a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ambos added 14 points including four made three-pointers. Junior Madison Fagliarone added five points, nine rebounds, and a game-high seven steals.
New Egypt 47, Matawan 43 (OT)
Senior forward Olivia Stillwell erupted for a game-high 29 points including eight three-pointers to lead the Warriors (1-0) past the Huskies (0-1) in an opening night overtime thriller. Senior forward Madison Adam added 17 points in the win. Stillwell and Adam combined for 46 of the 47 points scored for New Egypt.
Freshman Janet Koromah scored a team-high 11 points in the loss for the Huskies.
No. 4 Red Bank 32, No. 8 Brick 24
Senior Synai Blychanton pumped in a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the fourth ranked Bucs (1-0) to an opening night victory over the eighth ranked Dragons (0-1). Senior guard Zoey Gulley added six points on two made three-pointers. Sophomore Casey Miranda chipped in five points.
RBR jumped out to a 20-5 lead at half. Brick came out of the locker room in a 3/4 court trap which allowed them to crawl back into the game. Brick cut the RBR lead to 27-21 with four minutes left in the game before RBR closed the game out at the free throw line. “Our offense is a work in progress,” said RBR first year coach Adam Merklinger. “We know we can defend, but our offense will take time. We have the senior leadership to get it done. The girls are working hard in practice. We will get there.”
Sophomore guard Ariana Wissen scored a team-high nine points in the loss for the Dragons. Sophomores Kendall Fredrickson and Ily Poso chipped in six points each
Barnegat 49, Pinelands 18
Senior Madysen Plescho scored a game-high 11 points to lead the Bengals (1-1) to a bounce back victory over the Wildcats (0-1). Plescho converted on three three-pointers. Junior Jayla Duff added eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore Elayna Ordonez chipped in with seven points.
Sophomore Ava Plant scored a team-high eight points in the loss for the Wildcats.
No. 5 Colts Neck 58, Manalapan 12
Sophomore Julianna Jasina, the reigning Shore Sports Insider Freshman of the Year, scored a game-high 14 points as the Cougars (1-0) handled the Braves (0-1) on opening night. Senior Gabriella Bryce added 10 points while junior Matti Caffiero and sophomore Avery Wallace each chipped in with eight points.
Toms River South 58, Middletown North 38
Junior Linsey Cribbin erupted for a game-high 26 points to lead the Indians (1-0) to a resounding win over the Lions (0-1). Sophomore Kylee Ford added 12 points. Sophomore Daniella Gordon came through with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in addition to a game-high four steals. Sophomore Haley Johnson chipped in seven points and tallied a game-high four assists.
Senior Danielle Gonzalez scored a team-high 16 points in the loss for the Lions.
Southern 52, Brick Memorial 24
Freshman Brynn Angelozzi scored a game-high 10 points in her high school debut as the Rams (1-0) raced past the Mustangs (0-1). Senior Grace Lum and reshman Mikayla Blahut each added eight points.
