Point Boro 10, Carteret 0 (5 Innings)
Landon Hoyle pitched a six-inning shutout and the Panthers beat the Ramblers to complete a 4-0 stretch over the past seven days that sets up Point Boro to clinch a spot in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II section when the power points are updated on Thursday morning.
Matt Lokerson opened the scoring with a two-run single and later added another RBI in the second on an unorthodox fielder’s choice that dropped in centerfield but still resulted in a force out at second base. Aidan Dombrowski ripped an RBI single to make it 3-0 in the bottom of the first and also drew the first of five bases-loaded walks by Point Boro in the bottom of the sixth. The last of those RBI walks — by Graham Mattos with one out — ended the game via the 10-run rule.
After a 10-9 loss to Donovan Catholic on May 12, Point Boro was a longshot to qualify for the NJSIAA Tournament in a Central Group II section that is the hardest in New Jersey to qualify for in 2025. For context, Jackson Liberty is the No. 19 team in the section — three spots out of the final spot in the tournament — and yet would have qualified for every single one of the other 19 sections in the state.
Point Boro was then trailing a May 15 game vs. Freehold Boro, 3-1, going into the bottom of the seventh and rallied to win, 4-3, in eight innings. The Panthers then went on the road and beat South Hunterdon, 15-9, on Monday but still needed multiple things to break their way to grab the final spot in the Central Group II bracket.
On Tuesday, the Panthers did their part again and in dramatic fashion. Trailing Holmdel, 4-1, in the bottom of the seventh, Point Boro struck for four runs in its final at-bat, walking off with a 5-4 win on a wild pitch. In another game on Tuesday, Wall — the team that held the No. 16 seed through Monday’s games — lost an 8-7 game to Steinert.
Monmouth Regional then stood to take over the No. 16 seed, but Point Boro got another boost when St. Rose beat Red Bank, giving Point Boro crucial residual points thanks to two wins this season over the Purple Roses. Teams gain residual points for wins by their opponents, but only through the first 16 games of those opponents. St. Rose’s win over Red Bank came in its 16th game.
Even with its win over Holmdel — the No. 15 team in Central Group II through Tuesday — and St. Rose’s win, Point Boro was still behind both Wall and Monmouth for the final spot in the tournament heading into Wednesday. The rain throughout N.J. altered the schedule, with Wall’s game at St. John Vianney and Monmouth’s game at Middletown South both getting rained out Wednesday. Carteret was initially slated to host Point Boro, but its turf field was not playable due to flooding on the dirt mound and around the field. The Ramblers, however, agreed to make the trip to Point Boro, which got its field playable despite rain earlier in the day Wednesday.
Power points are updated overnight on NJ.com and brackets will be made official by the NJSIAA on Friday at noon.
