Class A Central
Middletown South 71, Manalapan 64
Freshman Ryan Gannon led four Middletown South scorers in double-figures with 23 points and the Eagles (11-6, 5-2) stayed in the hunt for a piece of the Class A Central division title by outscoring the Braves (5-10, 0-7) on the road.
Senior Matt Trimble poured in 17 points, classmate Beckett Oliver pitched in 13 and freshman Evan Wells netted 11 for Middletown South, which will attempt to deny Wall the Class A Central championship when the teams meet on Friday in Middletown.
Junior Joe Farino scored 20 points and senior Dean Aviles added 12 to lead Manalapan.
Class B North
Ranney 62, No. 3 Red Bank Catholic 57 (OT)
Junior Andrew Mardahaev made a game-tying putback at the fourth quarter buzzer and scored on a floater with 1:04 left in overtime that gave the Panthers the lead for good as Ranney (8-7, 4-3) toppled the Caseys (12-5, 5-2) in a result that sets up a four-team race for the Class B North division championship heading into the final three divisional games of the season for Ranney, RBC, Marlboro (13-3, 5-2) and Colts Neck (10-5, 5-2).
Ranney trailed, 48-46, with seven seconds remaining coming out of a timeout and senior Shaan Nayar got a three-point look for the win in the waning seconds. Nayar’s shot missed, but Mardahaev snatched the offensive rebound and put it right back up for the finish as final buzzer of regulation sounded.
Mardahaev finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while junior Alex Heyser led Ranney with 18 points while handing out three assists. Junior Ben Schaeffer poured in 14 points, including a three-point play and another and-one finish with 12 seconds of one another in overtime. Schaeffer also grabbed six rebounds and senior Shaan Nayar contributed 11 points for Ranney, which scored 12 points in the final two minutes of overtime to close out the victory.
Senior James Hankowski scored a game-high 24 points on eight three-pointers to lead Red Bank Catholic, which included a game-tying three that made it 55-55 with under 1:30 to go in overtime prior to Mardahaev’s go-ahead shot. Junior Tyler Hager added 14 points and classmate Ryder Ciorciari chipped in 11 in the loss.
Class B Central
Neptune 44, Matawan 42
Senior Jordan Pierre hit the game-winning free throws with eight seconds left on the way to posting 10 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as the Scarlet Fliers (6-9, 4-3) slipped past the Huskies (6-11, 4-3) in a down-to-the-wire finish.
Matawan tied the game on a three-pointer by senior Colin Reitmann with 14 seconds left and Pierre was fouled near midcourt to send the senior to the free-throw line, where he won the game with his two makes. The Huskies could not get a shot off in its final possession.
Senior C.J. Evans led Neptune’s balanced scoring effort with 13 points and junior Jeremiah McCleave poured in 11 in the victory. Reitmann finished with 12 to lead Matawan, while junior Christian Baskerville threw in 11 and senior Trevor Cole netted 10 in the loss.
Monmouth 57, Long Branch 34
Senior Ahmir Wiggins pumped in a game-high 22 points and junior Logan Conrade chipped in 12 to lead the Falcons (11-5, 5-2) over the Green Wave (4-13, 0-7) for a win that keeps their hopes of a Class B North division title share alive.
Senior Josh Da Cruz posted 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Long Branch.
Class B South
No. 9 Point Beach 61, Point Boro 60
Senior Jacob Edgecomb scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the middle two quarters and the Garnet Gulls (15-3, 6-1) held off a furious fourth-quarter surge by the Panthers (9-7, 4-3) to hold on for the win and complete the regular-season sweep of their rivals.
A fastbreak layup by junior George Breckenridge put Point Beach up, 59-39, with under 4:30 to play in the fourth quarter, at which point Point Boro mounted a huge comeback that gave the Panthers a chance to win the game on the final possession. Junior Hunter Hynes converted a four-point play that started a 21-2 run over the final 4:10 of the game.
Hynes scored eight of his 18 points in the fourth and senior Dean Cardia poured in eight of his 13 during the fourth-quarter run by the Panthers, who trailed, 49-34, heading into the fourth quarter. Cardia hit the three-pointer that cut Point Beach’s lead to 61-60 with 25 seconds left, which came between two empty trips to the free-throw line by the Garnet Gulls.
Point Boro advanced to the ball to midcourt with nine seconds left and called a timeout with nine seconds left to draw up a play. Hynes took a contested shot on a drive to the basket and Point Beach hauled in the rebound to escape with the win.
Breckenridge and fellow juniors Tyler Preston and Danny Cavanaugh each scored nine points for Point Beach. Senior Jovin Steinmetz and junior Landon Hoyle added 12 apiece for Point Boro.
Class C North
Shore 70, Henry Hudson 67 (OT)
Junior Kedo Sayson hit a running, game-tying shot in the lane with four seconds left in regulation and hit three of Shore’s 10 free throws during overtime to help the Blue Devils (11-4, 6-0) complete a come-from-behind, road win over the Admirals (10-6, 4-2) that clinches them at least a share of their second Shore Conference division championship in the last three years.
Senior Andrew Barham scored 21 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists to lead Shore, while twin brother Ryan Barham poured in 14 of his 20 points after halftime to go with six rebounds. Ryan Barham hit a three-pointer to tie the game, 54-54, with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter and Andrew converted a three-point play that gave Shore a 59-58 lead early in overtime — Shore’s first lead since 15-14 in the first quarter.
After Ryan Barham tied the game, Henry Hudson junior JoJo Newell drew a foul on the other end and hit a pair of go-ahead free throws with 1:11 left to make it 56-54. Shore bled the clock down to under 10 seconds and out of a timeout, Sayson — starting in place of junior Maddox Paulin (illness) — drove the ball into the lane and put up a difficult, over-the-shoulder shot that dropped to tie the game.
Shore shot 10-for-12 from the free-throw line in overtime, with one of the misses coming on a violation by Henry Hudson that gave Ryan Barham another attempt, which he made to give Shore a 61-60 lead.
Henry Hudson had a chance to tie the game when senior Billy Quinn was fouled with 1.3 seconds left on a three-point attempt with his team down, 69-66, but he missed the first attempt, made the second and was unable to hit the rim on his final attempt, which he intended to miss in order to give his team a chance at the offensive rebound.
Newell powered Henry Hudson with 33 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks, which added to his standing as the Shore Conference’s scoring leader this season. Newell joined the 1,000-point club last week and now has 414 for the season for an average of 25.9 per game.
Senior Finn Watson also contributed 14 points for Shore, which trailed, 44-28, near the midway point of the third quarter before closer the period with a 15-4 run that got the Blue Devils within 48-43 heading to the fourth.
Quinn poured in 18 points and junior Masio Tucker chipped in 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Henry Hudson.
Non-Division
No. 7 Jackson 74, St. Rose 57
Senior George Boley unleashed 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on the Purple Roses (1-16), as the Jaguars (11-4) raced to a road win that extends their winning streak to three.
Senior Jimmy Pappalardo drained five three-pointers en route to 19 points and sophomore Mi’Aire Anderson contributed 11 points and six rebounds for Jackson. Senior Sean Hallihan also grabbed 10 rebounds to go with four points for the Jaguars.
Senior Tyler Cameron poured in 27 points and classmate O’Rien Campbell added 10 to lead St. Rose, which dropped its 12th straight game.
Non-Conference
No. 5 Howell 65, Robbinsville 63
Junoir Jayson Parker scored 20 points and the Rebels (13-3) held off a late push by the Ravens (10-7) to secure a road win. Senior Cayden Parker added 14 points, junior Eddie Garcia poured in 12 and junior Noah Musto pitched in eight for Howell, which watched its double-digit fourth-quarter lead shrink to two in the final minute before the Rebels escaped with the win.
