First Round

Central Jersey Group IV

(10) Freehold Twp. 67, (7) Marlboro 37

Sophomore Jake Schultzel led a well-rounded effort with 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots and senior Nick Cardone posted 17 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Patriots (13-12) rode a red-hot starter and a dominant third quarter to a rout of the Mustangs (10-16).

Schultzel scored 10 points during a 24-0 Freehold Township run during the first quarter, which put the Patriots ahead, 24-3. After the two teams traded baskets, Freehold Township led, 26-5, after one.

Marlboro responded with a 16-4 run that pulled the Mustangs within 30-21 and Marlboro made it to halftime within 33-24.

In the third, Freehold Township held Marlboro to two points and built its lead back to 49-26 heading to the fourth quarter. Cardone scored six points during the 16-2 third-quarter run, with Schultzel and sophomore Cole Gerigk each contributing four during the third.

Gerigk finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while fellow sophomore John’ O’Neill contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Freehold Township.

Sophomore Nolan Gong led Marlboro with 15 points.

(13) Manalapan 63, (4) Old Bridge 60

Junior Dean Aviles and sophomore Spencer Schoenfeld each scored 18 points and the Braves (11-16) held on to upset the Knights (15-11) to advance to the sectional quarterfinals on Monday.

Senior Aiden Sosinov added 13 points and sophomore Greyson Ferraro pitched in nine while also coming up with two key steals in the final two minutes of the game.

 

Central Jersey Group II

(1) Manasquan 46, (16) Ocean 16

Senior Griffin Linstra and sophomore Logan Clevenland each scored 14 points and the Warriors (20-4) unleashed their suffocating defense in a round-one win over the Spartans (9-17).

Junior Aidan Saint Louis scored 10 of Ocean’s 16 points.

(5) Wall 67, (12) South River 43

Senior Demitri Tu scored a team-high 18 points and the Crimson Knights (20-5) wore down the Rams (15-12) to advance to the sectional quarterfinals Monday at No. 4 Delaware Valley.

Senior Tom Ekberg scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half to help Wall climb to a 28-17 lead at intermission. Ekberg also hauled in 13 rebounds and senior Brian McKenna chipped in 13 points for Wall, which put the game away with a 21-10 third quarter that made it 49-27 heading to the fourth.

Alex Grospe capped his 2,000-plus-point career at South River by scoring a game-high 33 points in the loss.

(3) Holmdel 68, (14) Roselle 30

Senior C.J. Karis led four Holmdel players in double-figure scoring with 14 points and the Hornets (16-8) routed the Rams (11-14) to reach Monday’s sectional quarterfinals against No. 11 Point Boro.

Senior Daxx Corneiro added 12 points, senior Joe Currieri threw in 11 and freshman Anthony Serini chipped in 10 for Holmdel. Junior Jack Vallillo also netted eight points in the win.

(11) Point Boro 67, (6) A.L. Johnson 52

Sophomore Hunter Hynes scored a game-high 23 points and the Panthers (14-12) led wire-to-wire in handing the Crusaders (21-4) their four and final loss of the season while picking up the first-round road win.

Senior T.J. Jordan added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench and senior Hudson Griffin also netted nine points to go with three assists. Senior Drew Cardia contributed eight points, six rebounds, five rebounds and four steals for Point Boro, which scored the first seven points of the game and led by as many as 13 points in the first half. The 15-point margin also marked the largest lead of the game for Point Boro.

The Panthers move on to face No. 3 Holmdel Monday in the sectional quarterfinals.

(2) Rumson-Fair Haven 84, (15) Raritan 43

Junior Luke Cruz scored a game-high 24 points and the Bulldogs (18-6) handled the Rockets (9-17) to advance to the sectional quarterfinals on Monday against No. 7 Metuchen.

Seniors Carson Memmott and Nic Economou each added 11 points for Rumson and 12 different Bulldogs players scored at least two points on one field goal, while 10 different players combined on 11 three-pointers.

Senior Alan Warren led Raritan with 10 points in his final high-school game.

 

South Jersey Group IV

(8) Southern 63, (9) Pennsauken 53

Junior Jake Sliwinski scored a game-high 24 points, including the 1,000th of his varsity career, and the Rams (18-8) upended the Indians (12-15) for their first NJSIAA Tournament win in 10 years. Southern advances to play at top-seeded Cherry Hill East in Monday’s sectional quarterfinal round.

Sliwinski also grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out four assists and nabbed five steals in Thursday’s win. Sophomore Noah Perna added 18 points and 10 rebounds and senior Cooper Dempsey pitched in nine points on three three-pointers.

(3) Central 67, (14) Washington Twp. 35

Senior Aidan Graham led all five Central starters in double-figure scoring with 15 points and classmate Jayson King keyed the offense with a double-double as the Golden Eagles (23-3) cruised to a round-one win over the Minutemen (10-16).

King finished with 11 points and 12 assists, while fellow senior Jaycen Santucci put up 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Royalty Riley added 12 points and sophomore Derek Roth pitched in 11 points and seven rebounds for Central, which will host No. 6 Kingsway in Monday’s sectional semifinals after the Dragons rallied in the final two minutes to beat Howell on Thursday night.

(6) Kingsway 54, (11) Howell 53

Maurice Tavares hit a long two-point jumper that gave Kingsway the lead with 20 seconds left and the Dragons (23-5) closed the game with seven unanswered points to deny the Rebels (14-12) the road upset.

Howell had a chance to win the game with a basket in the final seconds and got a pair of clean three-point looks, but neither shot found the mark.

Senior Peter Barkauskas closed out his career by scoring a team-high 18 points and junior Cayden Parker poured in 12 in the loss.

 

South Jersey Group II

(8) Lower Cape May 59, Barnegat 51

Mason Krey scored 11 points in the final game of his high school career to lead Barnegat’s scoring effort, but the Bengals (16-10) came up short on the road against the Tigers (15-11).

Krey finishes his career as the second ever player in Barnegat boys basketball history to score 1,000 points in his career. Senior Luke Tortorici added nine points and classmates Cole Toddings and Kyle Greenleaf each netted eight for Barnegat, which trailed by one point heading into the fourth quarter.

Ty Bonner scored a game-high 25 points to lead Lower Cape May, which will play top-seeded Camden in the sectional quarterfinals on Monday.
