Sectional Semifinals

Central Jersey Group IV

(3) West Windsor-Plainsboro North 57, (10) Freehold Twp. 54

Senior Nick Cardone scored a team-high 17 points and had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with nine seconds left, but his shot rimmed out and the Knights (23-5) held on to end the Patriots’ Cinderella run through Central Jersey Group IV.

Sophomore Jake Schultzel added 12 points, classmate Cole Gerigk pitched in 10 and senior Jordan Dulnuan contributed nine for Freehold Township (14-13), which stayed close with West Windsor North throughout.

Malachi Jeffers-Viera scored a game-high 23 points to lead West Windsor-Plainsboro North, which will travel to play top seed and defending champion Montgomery Saturday in the sectional final.

(1) Montgomery 67, (12) North Brunswick 43

Central Jersey Group II

(2) Rumson-Fair Haven 54, (3) Holmdel 48

Senior Carson Memmott scored a game-high 16 points, six in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs (20-6) held off the Hornets (17-9) for the third time this season to set up a rematch with defending champion Manasquan in the Central Jersey Group 2 final on Saturday at 3 P.M.

Junior center Luke Cruz had 12 points and senior guard David Carr added 10 for Rumson, which was down by three at the half.

Senior Daxx Corneiro led Holmdel with 14 points, senior guard Ireoluwa Adesina added 11, and classmate Joe Currieri had 10.

(1) Manasquan 53, (5) Wall 36

Sophomore Rey Weinseimer scored a game-high 27 points and senior teammate Griffin Linstra reached another career milestone while posting 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists to lead the Warriors (22-4) over the Crimson Knights (21-6) and into the sectional final round for the sixth straight season that the tournament has been held.

Among those 12 rebounds by Linstra was the 1,000th of his four-year varsity career, which goes with more than 1,300 career points. Linstra scored 11 of his points during the first half, with Manasquan taking a 25-18 lead to the locker room.

Weinseimer scored 19 points in the second half, including 14 in a decisive third quarter that saw Manasquan turn a 27-21 lead into 39-21 with a 12-0 run.

Junior Jack O’Reilly also saw his first action since re-injuring his ankle in the loss to St. Rose in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinal on Feb. 19. O’Reilly joined Linstra in leading Manasquan’s dominant performance on the glass, finishing with four points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Demitri Tu led Wall with 12 points.

For the second straight year, Manasquan will host Rumson-Fair Haven in the Central Jersey Group II championship game. The Warriors defeated Rumson, 36-30, in last year’s final by closing the game on a 13-0 run. They also won at Rumson in December in an overtime battle.

South Jersey Group IV

(2) Lenape 65, (3) Central 60

Senior Jaycen Santucci scored a game-high 34 points in what turned out to be the final game of his decorated, four-year career at Central as the Golden Eagles (24-4) lost a hard-fought sectional semifinal against the defending Group IV runner-up Indians (19-9).

Santucci also grabbed six rebounds and four steals and scored 26 of Central’s 34 points in the second half. The Golden Eagles erased a 10-point deficit at the end of the first quarter by closing the first half on an 11-0 run to take a 26-24 lead going into the locker room.

Lenape again went up by double-digits with a 15-5 run to go up, 50-40, with just over six minutes left, but Central again battled back — this time to within two, 52-50. Santucci scored six of the 10 points during that spurt, with senior Royalty Riley scoring the other four. Riley finished with 10 points and six rebounds in his final game.

Lenape, however, had one more answer and it was the one that put the game away. The Indians broke Central’s full-court press and Nate Myer converted a basket as he was fouled and made the free-throw to push Lenape’s lead back to 55-50 with two minutes to go.

Santucci managed to score 10 points in the final two minutes, but Lenape protected the ball and went 9-for-12 at the free-throw line in the final 1:30.

Jaidyn Boyd scored 17 of his team-high 25 points in the second half and connected on four of Lenape’s six three-pointers. The other two threes came from Mehki Carter, who overcame foul trouble to score 20 before ultimately fouling out.

Senior Jayson King also scored nine points for Central — all of which came on three first-half three-pointers that helped Central erase the 19-9 deficit heading into the second quarter.
