Men’s X Mental Showcase

At Red Bank

No. 9 Red Bank Catholic 72, Ranney 59

Senior Ryan Prior scored 26 points to go with 12 rebounds and four assists to earn MVP honors and lead the Caseys (9-7) to a win over the Panthers (7-6).

Senior Sean Saxton added 16 points, 11 rebounds and four assists and junior James Hankowski chipped in 11 points for Red Bank Catholic, which hit Ranney with a 20-0 run to close the first half and flip a 22-19 deficit into a 40-22 halftime lead.

Junior Shaan Nayar scored 13 points while grabbing five rebounds and senior Justin Buck pitched in 12 points and six boards to lead Ranney.

 


No. 5 CBA 51, No. 4 Red Bank 49

Sophomore David Buley put back his own miss with 3.5 seconds left and the Colts (12-3) held on to beat the Bucs (14-2) on the road, handing Red Bank just its second loss of the season.

Buley finished with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench and his game-winner helped CBA escape Red Bank with a win after the hosts erased a 10-point second-half deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter.

On the final play of the game, Buley defended the inbounder both before a foul by Red Bank and after with 1.1 seconds left, with the Bucs inbounding the ball from midcourt. Senior Zayier Dean got off a shot at the buzzer from beyond the three-point line, which came up short.

Senior Justin Fuerbacher led CBA with 13 points and six rebounds and hit a pair of three-pointers to slow Red Bank’s momentum after the Bucs too a 44-39 lead with a 14-0 run. Senior Charlie Messano then hit a midrange jumper to give CBA the lead back, 47-46.

Senior Kevin Pikiell scored 10 points and converted a drive to the basket that stretched CBA’s lead to 49-46. After an empty possession, Red Bank forced a CBA turnover to get the ball back and Dean hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 49 with 59 seconds left.

CBA then ran the clock to 21 seconds and after a timeout, Buley got the ball in the high post and drove to the basket. After missing the first try, he grabbed his own miss and put it right back up for the go-ahead score.

Dean led the fourth-quarter comeback by Red Bank with 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final period. Senior Ryan Fisher added 15 points, but had to leave the game after injuring his head in a collision with teammate Will Galligan.

Dean and Galligan hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to open the fourth quarter and tie the game, 39-39, and Red Bank took the lead on a five-point possession. After a CBA turnover, the Colts committed an intentional foul that gave St. Rose two free throws and the ball. Fisher hit both foul shots and Dean followed with a three for a 44-39 lead.

Union Catholic 62, No. 1 St. Rose 59 (OT)

Junior Jayden Hodge scored a game-high 25 points and converted a game-tying layup after a steal with just over a minute left in overtime, but the Vikings (11-4) scored the final three points of overtime to pull out a thriller over the Purple Roses (11-5).

Trailing, 59-55, in overtime, St. Rose scored four straight points to tie the game, starting with an acrobatic shot near the basket by senior Evan Romano as he was fouled. Romano missed the free throw and after a jumpball on the rebound, Hodge stole the ball in the backcourt and laid it in for a 59-59 tie.

St. Rose committed a foul near midcourt, sending Union Catholic senior and former Rumson-Fair Haven guard Luke Schorr to the free-throw line with 58 seconds left. Schorr knocked down both free throws to give Union Catholic a 61-59 lead.

Senior A.J. Altobelli later hit one of two free throws with 18 seconds left to push the Union Catholic lead to three and St. Rose used a timeout with 4.8 seconds left after grabbing an offensive rebound. Romano got off a fading three-point attempt before the buzzer, but it clanged off the back iron.

St. Rose fell into a 29-13 hole early in the second quarter but closed the half with 10 unanswered points as part of a 15-0 run that carried into the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Purple Roses held Union Catholic scoreless for just under seven minutes of game time and without a field goal for just under 10 minutes.

Senior Bryan Ebeling scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including the game-tying drive with 18 seconds left in regulation, knotting the score, 55-55. Romano added eight points and freshman Izayah Cooper chipped in eight for St. Rose.

Altobelli led Union Catholic with 19 points, while 6-foot-11 center Yaw Ansong added 14 and Schorr chipped in 10.

At Middletown North

Toms River East 43, Toms River South 37

Freshman Brady Gillen scored a game-high 18 points and the Raiders (6-8) beat the rival Indians (2-12) at Middletown North.

Senior Mason Clinton added 10 points and four assists and junior Shamus O’Grady chipped in six points and 10 rebounds for Toms River East. Junior Jacob Myers led Toms River South with 14 points.

 

Non-Division

Point Beach 58, Monmouth 35

Senior Scot Crowley led four Point Beach players in double-figure scoring with 16 points and the Garnet Gulls (11-5) sailed to a win over the Falcons (2-12).

Junior Jacob Edgecomb scored 14 points, sophomore Tyler Preston contributed 11 points and seven assists, and sophomore George Breckenridge chipped in 10 points for Point Beach.

Freehold Twp. 60, Middletown South 54

Sophomore Jake Schultzel led a balanced scoring effort with 16 points and the Patriots (6-7) overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to nail down a road win over the Eagles (7-8).

Sophomore John O’Neill scored 14 points and classmate Dakota Lasater contributed 11, giving Freehold Township’s sophomore trio a combined 41 points. Senior Nick Cardone also chipped in nine points in the win.

Senior Brady Hahn and junior Matt Trimble accounted for 44 of Middletown South’s 54 points, with Hahn scoring a game-high 25 and Trimble netting 19.

No. 7 Holmdel 59, Raritan 34

Senior C.J. Karis scored 18 points to help the Hornets (9-5) handle the Rockets (7-9). Senior Ire Adesina added 14 points and junior Jack Vallillo chipped in 10 for Holmdel.

Junior Ian Mullan scored 10 points and senior Xavier Nunez added nine to lead Raritan.

Jackson Memorial 56, Manalapan 52

Junior George Boley scored 20 points while grabbing five rebounds and handing out seven assists, leading the Jaguars (6-10) to a win over the Braves (5-8).

Junior Yasser Johnson added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, senior Adrian Wilson scored all 10 of his points in the second quarter and freshman Mi’Aire Anderson pitched in six points and seven rebounds for Jackson Memorial.

Senior Aiden Sosinov scored 20 points to lead Manalapan and junior Dean Aviles threw in 15 in the loss.

St. John Vianney 48, Manchester 42

Sophomores Justin Togans and Nicky Mejia each scored 14 points and Togans complemented his scoring with 12 rebounds as the Lancers (6-11) held serve at home with a win over the Hawks (2-13).

Senior Aidan Lunn scored a game-high 18 points to lead Manchester.

Middletown North 52, Brick Memorial 46

Senior Colin Byrne pumped in a career-high 30 points while grabbing five rebounds and the Lions (11-6) took down the Mustangs (7-10) on the road.

Byrne shot 10-for-11 from the free-throw line to help his cause and sophomore Nate Tyburczy added 11 points for Middletown North.

Junior Sean Collins scored 15 points and classmate Nyzier Matthews added 11 points and nine rebounds to lead Brick Memorial. Senior Joe Witter and junior Austin Braaten each added eight points in the loss, with Witter contributing seven rebounds and three blocks and Braaten handing out four assists.

No. 6 Rumson-Fair Haven 90, Toms River North 51

Senior David Carr led 14 different Rumson scorers with 17 points and the Bulldogs (11-3) rolled to a rout of the Mariners (5-11) behind a barrage of 21 three-pointers.

Senior Riley Gill added 16 points and junior Andrew Cavise chipped in 12 for Rumson. Freshman Jake Greenberg led Toms River North with 15 points.

 

 

Non-Conference

No. 8 Colts Neck 63, Union City 61 (OT)

Senior Lukas Sloan scored a game-high 23 points and the Cougars (7-5) outlasted the Soaring Eagles (8-8). Junior Dillon Younger poured in 15 points, senior Dan Buoncore chipped in nine and senior Bryce Belcher contributed eight for Colts Neck.

Shore 60, Roselle Park 50

Senior Bryce Crowe scored 15 points on Senior Day and junior Andrew Barham matched him as the Blue Devils (12-3) topped the Panthers (1-12). Sophomore Maddox Paulin and junior Finn Watson each added 11 points for Shore.

 

Jeff Coney Classic

At Rancocas Valley

No. 2 Manasquan 52, Lenape 34

Senior Griffin Linstra posted 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists and the Warriors (13-2) stormed past the Indians (10-4) in convincing fashion.

Sophomore Rey Weinseimer added 13 points, three assists and three steals while classmate Logan Cleveland contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for Manasquan.

No. 3 Central 60, Cherry Hill West 35

Senior Jaycen Santucci poured in 21 points to go with four assists and three steals and the Golden Eagles (15-1) soared to a one-sided win over the Lions (8-8).

Senior Aidan Graham added 11 points for Central, which now owns the best record in the Shore Conference as the Shore’s lone remaining one-loss team.
