Southern 40, Highland 8
The Rams (1-0) traveled down to Rowan University where they stifled the Tartans (0-1) at this year’s Battle at the Beach event. Southern marched 62 yards in 10 plays on their opening drive, finishing with a 5-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Niko Iliescu for a 7-0 lead.
Junior wideout Chris Raub then scored on a jet sweep to make the score 14-0 with just 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Senior cornerback Ace Williams ended Highland’s second series with an interception, and the Rams drove 54 yards in 10 plays for their next score. The drive nearly derailed after a holding call coupled with a personal foul pushed the ball back to a 2nd-and-goal situation from the 32-yard line, but junior quarterback Carson Abbato found Raub deep along the sideline at the 3-yard line, which put the Rams in position for Abbato to find Raub again on the following play on a quick slant for a touchdown for a 21-0 lead with 5:06 remaining in the second quarter.
Rams senior linebacker Ty Eck’Art then recovered a fumble at the Highland 14-yard line. Four plays later, it was senior running back Aidan Covell powering into the end zone from 2 yards to give the Rams a 28-0 lead.
On the Tartans’ next series, a high snap on a punt was picked up by Southern senior safety Dillon Wolfer, who trotted 4 yards for a touchdown and a 35-0 lead.
Highland’s first drive of the second half ended on Williams’ second interception of the day on a deflected pass that he managed to pin again an offensive player before controlling the ball. Sophomore kicker Cole Celeste booted a 45-yard field goal from the left hash to make the score 38-0.
The Tartans went backwards on their next possession winding up at their own goal line. On 4th down, they opted to intentionally take a safety with their punter running out of the back of the end zone to give the Rams a 40-0 lead.
Freehold 14, New Brunswick 8
Senior quarterback Julian Isaacs threw for one touchdown and ran for another to help the Colonials (1-0) open the season with a win over the Zebras (0-1).
The game was tied 8-8 before Isaacs tossed a touchdown pass to junior wideout Mike Tracey III in the third quarter to break the tie. Linebacker Jamar Reed led the defensive effort to close out the win, and Damier Lester had a strong game returning punts to flip field position.
Manville 19, Keyport 6
John D’Ambrosio had a pair of touchdowns as the Mustangs (1-0) handed the Red Raiders (0-1) a loss in the season opener.

Manasquan 27, Toms River South 0
The Warriors (1-0) began the game running – and never stopped – en route to a dominant opening victory over the Indians (0-1).
Ace Etienne got the party started, breaking free for a 65-yard score just minutes into the game to get Manasquan on the board. After a relatively quiet rest of the opening quarter, the Warriors got into the red zone and Etienne converted for the second time in the game, this time from four yards out. Ten more minutes of solid defense ensued, but with just under three minutes left in the first half, Dax Klein joined in with a 29-yard touchdown run to send Manasquan into the locker room up 20-0. The Warriors put up their fourth score of the game midway through the third quarter, after Frankie Tackett found Jack O’Reilly from 17 yards out to finish the scoring for the night.
No. 4 Rumson-Fair Haven 34, No. 5 Point Boro 0
Junior quarterback Casey Moore ran for one touchdown and threw for another, and sophomore quarterback Brady Williams threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Bulldogs (1-0) rolled to their third straight win over the Panthers (0-1) and extended their winning streak to 14 games.
Moore scored on a 1-yard keeper and also had a 42-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Brandon McDonald with 37 seconds left in the second quarter for a 20-0 lead at halftime. Williams had a four-yard run and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Grant Zimmerer and a 35-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Chris Economou. Senior running back Kellen Murray added 105 yards rushing in the win.
Rumson’s defense handed Point Boro its first shutout loss since 2020.
No. 2 Brick Memorial 35, No. 9 Wall 7
No Jason Lajara? No problem for the Mustangs (1-0).
Star senior linebacker Trey Tallmadge took the usual senior signal-caller’s place, and the offense did not skip a beat. The Crimson Knights (0-1) started to get some momentum driving, but Brick Memorial’s defense combined a third-down stop with a sniffed-out fake punt to get the ball in solid standing. Both defenses held strong through the first quarter without any points, but then Tallmadge and company got rolling. Early in the second, Tallmadge found senior wide receiver Nyzier Matthews open for a 71-yard score to kickstart the offense. In the dying minutes of the first half, Tallmadge got free again and scored from 15 yards out to notch a pivotal second touchdown on the board heading into the locker room.
On just the second play of the third quarter, Tallmadge found big yardage once again, hitting senior wide receiver Ricky Dillon for a 77-yard score. The Sacred Heart commit then decided to make a big play on the defensive end, picking off a pass on the sideline. He was rewarded for his own efforts with a two-yard score to put the game effectively out of reach. Senior running back Nazeer Whittaker added another score early in the fourth quarter before the reserves got into the game, and the Crimson Knights got on the board late with a rushing touchdown from quarterback Jasyi Medler.

Seton Hall Prep 14, No. 10 St. John Vianney 12
It was a tale of two halves for both the Pirates (1-0) and the Lancers (0-1). Neither team put up a point on the scoreboard in the opening 24 minutes, but once they exited the locker room for the second half, the offenses began to open up.
St. John Vianney got the scoring started just over two minutes into the half, thanks to a 52-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zach LaBarca to sophomore wide receiver Khalyd Goodman. The Lancers missed the extra point to take a 6-0 lead. Seton Hall Prep immediately responded, however, as senior running back Bryce Robbins returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to put the Pirates ahead 7-6. Seton Hall Prep’s defense then forced a punt, before its offense put together an extended scoring drive, punctuated by a 27-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Ty Newcomb on a 4th-and-6. Senior wide receiver Aiden Lockett made a leaping grab over the middle, and the extra point gave the Pirates a 14-6 lead with under two minutes to play in the third quarter.
Similarly to the third quarter, St. John Vianney got on the board two and a half minutes into the fourth, as new running back Corleii Thomas took a handoff to the outside and scored from four yards out. The potential game-tying two-point conversion fell incomplete, setting the score at 14-12, where it would ultimately end up. The Lancers had multiple chances, but went three-and-out when backed up to their own one-yard line, and later muffed a punt return with under two minutes to play, sealing the victory for Seton Hall Prep.
Central 27, Steinert 6
It took a while for the Golden Eagles’ (1-0) offense to fully get into the game, but it did not end up mattering thanks to the other two phases of the game.
On the Spartans’ (0-1) opening drive, they got into the red zone and even down inside goal-to-go territory, but junior defensive back Zyshun Carroll changed that. He jumped a pass over the middle and took it from the five-yard line all the way back to the Steinert 25. Central ultimately did not score, as a fourth-down pass attempt fell to the ground. That’s where the Golden Eagles’ defense decided to do it themselves. Fellow junior defensive back CJ Yates jumped a screen pass and took it to the house from 35 yards out in the final two minutes of the first quarter.
Both teams put together some more stable drives in the second quarter, but Central made another splash play late in the frame. Sophomore linebacker Gus Copes burst through the line on a fourth-down punt attempt, swatted the kick, and took it himself for a 40-yard score to put the Golden Eagles up 14-0. The Spartans drove into Central territory late in the half, but a 40-yard field goal fell wide left as time expired.
The Golden Eagles forced yet another turnover, picking off their third pass of the game as Steinert was putting together a drive in Central territory. Yates scored his second touchdown of the game – this time on offense – catching a pass from three yards out. The Spartans put together an extended drive into the fourth quarter, ultimately putting up their first points of the game thanks to a play-action scramble from John Logorda. Central junior running back Dominic Prasad took the ensuing kickoff into Steinert territory, but a holding penalty nullified his efforts. He was rewarded multiple plays later, getting a long screen pass into Spartan territory. Yates caught a pass but fumbled on the following play, giving Steinert the ball down two touchdowns with eight minutes remaining.
Tensions rose a bit in Bayville after a third-and-17 from midfield was nearly converted by the Spartans, but on fourth-and-three Steinert could not get the snap off. Pushed back five yards, the offense could not convert on an incomplete pass. Central put together a long scoring drive to ice the game, punctuated by an 11-yard touchdown run from Austin Jarvis with two minutes left.
Hightstown 9, Matawan 7
The Rams (1-0) used some last-second heroics to notch their first win of the season over the Huskies (0-1), converting on a game-winning field goal in the final seconds that hit an upright and went through.
Matawan sophomore running back Sean Euell started off the scoring with a first-quarter rushing touchdown. Hightstown scored a potential game-tying touchdown, but a missed extra point kept Matawan in the lead.
Point Beach 37, South River 6
The Garnet Gulls (1-0) dominated their opening matchup, overwhelming the Rams (0-1) with their downfield passing attack and stout defensive front.
Point Beach senior quarterback Matthew Rossi found junior wide receiver Danny Cavanaugh way downfield for over 50 yards down to the Rams one-yard line, then Rossi took it in himself on the next play with three minutes left in the first quarter.
Point Beach freshman receiver Jalen Kreiger then took another short pass, broke multiple tackles and rumbled down to the one-yard line before senior running back Elijah Ives punched it in. Less than 90 seconds later, senior safety Ben Marzarella picked off a pass inside South River’s red zone, setting up a 20-yard touchdown pass from Rossi to Cavanaugh.
The Rams put together a solid drive, working themselves into the red zone again, but the Garnet Gulls’ front stuffed a 4th-and-one attempt. On the very next play, Kreiger once again rumbled for 71 yards into the red zone. Rossi found Ives on fourth-and-goal from the two-yard line with 17 seconds remaining, and the two-point conversion gave Point Beach an even 30-0 lead at the half.
The Rams fumbled on a run play a few minutes into the third quarter, and the Garnet Gulls took one last shot. Rossi rolled out to his right, fired a rainbow pass down the sideline – while getting drilled in the process – and Cavanaugh hauled in a highlight-reel diving catch from 36 yards out.
