The Bucs (1-1, 1-0) and first-year head coach Tyler Karalewich got in the win column for the first time with a back-and-forth victory over the Cougars (0-3, 0-1).
RBR struck first in the opening quarter, but Colts Neck responded on defense with a pick-six by senior defensive back Aiden Bain to tie the game with under nine minutes to play in the second quarter. The 7-7 tie would last through halftime.
In the second half, the Bucs added a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters, but an RJ Conover 11-yard score for the Cougars was not enough to get back in the game.
For the Bucs, quarterback Brett Laude threw two touchdown passes, one to Bennett Lopez and one to Ari Fraser. In the ground game, Matt Huss ran for over 100 yards and a score of his own. Huss – and the rest of Red Bank’s defensive line – wreaked havoc with 10 tackles and a sack. Lopez added another sack on defense, and Jah’Mir Lane-Bailey coupled two sacks of his own with two forced fumbles and recoveries.

Class A North
No. 5 Holmdel 33, No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven 21
The Hornets (2-0, 1-0) got their second win of the year in stunning fashion, taking down the Bulldogs (2-1, 0-1) for the first time since 1999.
SSI first-team All-Shore quarterback Jack Cannon had one of his best days with 130 yards passing and a touchdown, coupled with 200 yards and four scores on the ground.
He kicked it off with a one-yard touchdown on the ground, set up by an interception from freshman defensive back Tyler Carri. That 7-0 score would hold for the remainder of the first quarter, but three minutes into the second quarter, Cannon rumbled into the end zone for the second time, this one from two yards out. He was rewarded for his efforts after hitting two big pass plays earlier in the drive.
Minutes later, Holmdel’s opportunistic defense struck again. Junior defensive back Michael Todisco intercepted Rumson-Fair Haven quarterback Casey Moore, and the Hornets put together another extended drive. This one lasted nearly the entire rest of the second quarter, capped off by a 26-yard score from Cannon to senior wide receiver James Murphy with six seconds left on a tipped pass. A missed extra point gave the Hornets an even 20-0 lead headed into the locker room.
Todisco struck again early in the third quarter with his second interception of the game, but Cannon threw a pick of his own to Bulldog junior linebacker Ryder Izzo that set Rumson-Fair Haven up in opposing territory. Izzo scored from three yards out to put his team on the board.
That momentum did not last long, however, as on the ensuing drive Cannon broke free for a 72-yard score to put Holmdel back up 26-7.
Rumson-Fair Haven closed the third quarter strong, with a touchdown from sophomore quarterback Brady Williams to senior wideout Brandon McDonald, and the following offensive drive saw the Bulldogs get into the red zone. That opportunity was closed by Holmdel senior defensive lineman Ted Koukomis, who intercepted a pass at his own 11-yard line. The turnover was compounded by another long run by Cannon – this one from 73 yards.
Williams scored on a one-yard keeper to pull to within 12 points again, but that would be the final score of the game.
No. 6 Middletown North 37, Marlboro 7
The Lions (2-0, 1-0) used a strong first half and cruised to a win over the Mustangs (2-1, 0-1).
Middletown North added four scores in the opening 24 minutes, as junior running back Matt Belenko notched two scores on the ground. Quarterback Owen Robson scored two touchdowns of his own, one with his legs and another to wide receiver Jack Viola. Viola and junior defensive back Brennan Cross made a splash play on defense, combining for a safety to give the Lions a 30-7 lead.
Patrick Jacques scored a rushing touchdown of his own as the second half’s lone score.
No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 35, Middletown South 7
The Caseys (3-0, 1-0) continued their unbeaten start, using a big second half to take down the Eagles (0-3, 0-1) as freshman quarterback Rahmir Rivera threw for a career-high 252 yards along with two touchdowns on 21-for-26 passing.
Freshman running back Gabe Kemp got the scoring started with a rushing touchdown to close the first quarter on his way to 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
The score would remain 7-0 until halftime, but a minute into the third quarter Rivera found sophomore wideout Jason Bereczky for a 15-yard score.
From there, Red Bank Catholic’s scoring floodgates opened. Kemp added his second score of the day with four minutes to play in the third quarter from six yards out to push the lead to 21-7. In the final 30 seconds of the quarter, Rivera again found Bereczky from four yards out to go ahead by three scores.
Junior Luke Scaturro put the finishing touches on the win for the Caseys with an interception taken back for a touchdown with under five minutes left.
Class A South
No. 4 Brick Memorial 41, Point Boro 27
Quarterback Jason Lajara returned for the Mustangs (2-1, 1-0) and helped lead the team to a victory over the Panthers (0-3, 0-1).
Point Boro struck first with a 38-yard touchdown from quarterback Jake Clayton to receiver Landon Neris just over a minute into the game. Lajara responded immediately, firing a 59-yard jump-ball score to receiver Nyzier Matthews on the following play from scrimmage. With 10 seconds left in the opening frame, the Panthers took a 13-7 lead after a one-yard score from Clayton.
Lajara kept up his strong play to open the second quarter, completing multiple big plays with his arm and scoring with his legs on a fourth-and-goal to tie the game. Point Boro retook the lead minutes later thanks to a two-yard touchdown from running back Calvin Videon-Perino. The Panthers converted on a third-and-15 to keep the drive alive. The defense also did some solid work, stopping Brick Memorial on a crucial fourth down in opposing territory to keep a 20-13 lead at halftime.
Three minutes into the third quarter, running back Nazeer Whittaker scored from 15 yards out to tie the game at 20, but midway through the frame Point Boro running back Nick Spanola grabbed the lead back with a 21-yard score.
Whittaker added his second score to get Brick Memorial within one point, catching a screen and finding paydirt from 15 yards out with a minute to play in the third quarter. A missed extra point kept the Mustangs behind 27-26, but they marched down the field on their opening drive of the fourth quarter.
Originally settling for a go-ahead field goal, Brick Memorial was given fresh life after a roughing the kicker penalty on Point Boro. Lajara then ran in a touchdown from three yards out on the ensuing play, and Matthews caught a two-point conversion to take a 34-27 lead with 5:23 left. With the Panthers driving in the final two minutes, Matthews made his big play on defense with a 73-yard pick-six to seal the game.
Donovan Catholic 14, No. 3 Toms River North 0
The Griffins (1-2, 1-0) put a win on their ledger thanks to a standout defensive performance against the Mariners (1-2, 0-1)
The defensive battle finally saw a score when freshman quarterback Chris McClaren found Aidan Kelly down the field for his first career touchdown pass. Ethan Nicolas later added a rushing touchdown to put Donovan Catholic up by two scores.
Linebacker Jason Madden and lineman Kai Pritchard both wreaked havoc in the opposing backfield on the defensive side, with Pritchard recording three sacks and Madden two.
Class B North
No. 7 St. John Vianney 49, No. 12 Freehold Township 35
The Lancers (2-1, 1-0) got their second straight conference win, outracing the Patriots (2-1, 0-1) in a big-time scoring performance led by senior quarterback Zach LaBarca’s four passing touchdowns.
Senior running back Danny Breen finished with 184 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 21 carries for St. John Vianney, while senior wideout Adam Urs caught four passes for 106 yards and two scores.
After the Patriots went three-and-out on the game’s opening drive, sophomore defensive back Scott Monge made an impact play on defense. He forced a fumble and took it for an 85-yard score and a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, LaBarca found Urs for a 73-yard score to give the Lancers a 7-6 advantage. Patriots quarterback Dakota Lasater then got Freehold Township’s offense on the board with a 28-yard touchdown to junior Mikey Lorenzo, giving his team a 13-6 lead just seven minutes into the game.
The scoring slowed down a bit, at least for the next eight minutes of game action, until the Lancers rolled the dice on a fourth down, and it paid off when LaBarca and Urs connected once again for a 26-yard score three minutes into the second quarter. Freehold Township snatched the lead right back near the end of the first half, as Lasater threw a 24-yard score to receiver Jake Schultzel with under a minute to play. Not to be outdone, LaBarca again struck a big play, firing a buzzer-beating, 30-yard touchdown to sophomore Khalyd Goodman-Ware with two seconds left in the half to give St. John Vianney a 21-20 lead into the locker room.
Breen then took his turn on offense, plunging into the end zone from a yard out to push the Lancers’ lead to 28-20 in the third quarter. They later added a third straight score thanks to a 19-yard run from running back Corleii Thomas to take a 35-20 lead with under three minutes left in the third quarter.
The Patriots were not done, however, as Lasater scrambled and found running back Dennis Quattrache open for a 45-yard score just minutes later to bring the game back to a one-possession margin. They opted to follow up the score with an onside kick, recovered by James Russo, and gave the offense a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter.
The drive ultimately did not yield any points, as both teams exchanged a rare defensive stop to start the fourth quarter. The Patriots eventually got the ball back and drove into the red zone, and Schultzel notched his second touchdown of the game with a nine-yard reception on fourth down. He followed it up with a game-tying two point conversion catch to knot the game at 35 with 3:19 left.
St. John Vianney turned its offense up a notch and drove down the field in just over a minute. LaBarca threw a go-ahead, 24-yard score to tight end Thomas Foley to give the Lancers a lead they would not relinquish. After a stop on the ensuing drive, Breen closed out the game with a 43-yard run to seal it.

The Crimson Knights (1-2, 1-0) notched their first win of the season with a stout defensive performance against the Rebels (1-2, 0-1)
Senior Dylan Cohen got the scoring started with a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. That score would remain for the rest of the half, as both defenses held each other in check following the first touchdown.
The Crimson Knights showed some trickery in the third quarter, as Jack Murphy found Justin Davis on a fake field goal attempt to give Wall some breathing room on the scoreboard. The Crimson Knights added their third and final score later in the frame, as Wyatt Capro blocked a Howell punt and returned it for a 23-yard score for the second special teams touchdown of the night.

Gagneron and Williams connected yet again in the third quarter, this time from 28 yards out, to make it three consecutive scores for the Huskies to take a 22-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors went on a run of their own to start the fourth quarter, getting touchdowns from Jack O’Reilly and Frankie Tackett to tie the game, but Williams caught a go-ahead, 43-yard touchdown from Gagneron for the duo’s third score of the night. The Braves (2-1) picked up their second straight win, outpacing the Jaguars (1-2) in a high-scoring affair.
Returning third-team All-Shore running back Ah’sere Woolfolk got the scoring started with a 45-yard touchdown run with seven minutes to play in the opening quarter. Jackson followed up with a drive that got into the red zone, but ended with a 23-yard field goal with a minute to play in the frame.
Midway through the second quarter, fellow third-team All-Shore running back Nicky Palmieri joined the party with an 80-yard score down the sideline for Manalapan.
