Howell, Football Team of the Week

Howell is the Jersey Mike’s Week 1 Shore Conference Football Team of the Week

Shore Sports Insider is proud to partner with Jersey Mike’s this fall to present our weekly Football Team of the Week award that recognizes one school for its accomplishments during the prior week.

The Jersey Mike’s Shore Conference Football Team of the Week for Week 1 is Howell, which opened its season with a great offensive performance that led the way in a 42-33 victory over district rival and then-No. 9 Freehold Township. Shore Sports Insider stopped by practice on Tuesday to present the Rebels and head coach Bill Hill with a special game ball and a $500 Jersey Mike’s gift card for a team meal.

Like most teams, Howell had some question marks surrounding it entering the season based on standouts who graduated in June, but the Rebels assuaged any doubts with a 42-point effort to take down a ranked team that is arguably its biggest rival. Senior quarterback Vince Meehan ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and threw for 90 yards and two scores. He connected with senior Jason Borgia on a 20-yard touchdown pass and tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jackson Behn. The Rebels ran for 279 yards and four touchdowns as a team with senior Juan DeJesus gaining 53 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and senior Quincy Shaw also rushing for a score.

The Rebels’ defense did just enough to contain a lethal Freehold Township passing attack led by senior Nick Cardone, who led the Shore in passing yards and touchdowns as a junior. Cardone threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score, but the Rebels recovered two fumbles to help turn the tide. Shaw recorded a team-high 10 tackles, David Strouse picked up a sack, and Josh Krutyansky and Ryan Cross recovered fumbles.

Howell now enters what figures to be a challenging Class A South schedule. All six teams are ranked in the SSI Atlantic Physical Therapy Top 12 with the Rebels entering the rankings this week. They’ll make the short drive down Herbertsville Road this Friday when they take on No. 5 Brick Memorial in one of four matchups between ranked teams in Week 2.
