Wall is the Week 3 Jersey Mike’s Shore Conference Football Team of the Week
Shore Sports Insider is proud to partner with Jersey Mike’s this fall to present our weekly Football Team of the Week award that recognizes one school’s accomplishments during the prior week.
The Jersey Mike’s Shore Conference Football Team of the Week for Week 3 is Wall, which improved to 4-0 with a dramatic 36-26 victory over St. John Vianney in a marquee Class C North game between ranked teams. Shore Sports Insider stopped by practice on Tuesday to present the Crimson Knights and head coach Ed Gurrieri with a special game ball and a $500 Jersey Mike’s gift card for a team meal.
Trailing by three entering what turned into a frantic fourth quarter, the Crimson Knights scored 14 unanswered points on two outstanding plays to earn a victory that kept them tied atop the Class C North division standings. With Wall down 29-26 after St. John Vianney rallied with 20 straight points, senior Tony Credle took a quick pass from sophomore quarterback Franny Scaramellino and turned it into a go-ahead 58-yard reception and a 29-26 lead.
The game took a wild turn in the final two minutes when a high snap on a Wall punt resulted in an interception that St. John Vianney’s Dirk Hohenkirk returned to the Wall 7-yard line. The Knights stopped the Lancers on first and second down, and on third down the ball was fumbled at the mesh point of a handoff and scooped up by Wall senior linebacker Joe Vaccaro, who raced 90 yards for a touchdown to seal a chaotic victory.
Wall jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter when junior Heath Reinhardt ran for a 25-yard touchdown run and delivered a 55-yard touchdown reception. The lead grew to 16-0 when a bad snap on a punt resulted in Wall tackling the Lancers’ punter in the end zone for a safety.
St. John Vianney began to claw back when sophomore running back Abdul Turay ran for a 1-yard touchdown, but Wall answered on the ensuing kickoff when senior Mason Adam returned it to the 1-yard line, St. John Vianney forced a fumble just before the goal line and sophomore Wall Luke Davis recovered the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. St. John Vianney closed the gap to 23-14 at halftime when Adam Urs caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Zach LaBarca and Nico Aquilone secured the 2-point conversion pass.
St. John Vianney took the lead in the third quarter on Turay’s touchdown runs of 37 and 7 yards. Turay finished with 203 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 25 carries.
For Wall, Scaramellino had another strong game by completing 10 of 17 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Adam rushed for 93 yards on 16 carries and Reinhardt combined for 86 yards and two touchdowns on four touches.
The depth of the Class C North division means there are no weeks off. To remain unbeaten and in first place, the No. 6 Crimson Knights will have to slow down standout quarterback Jack Cannon and No. Holmdel on Friday night.
