Jan. 3 to Jan. 11
Daniel Benbrook, Jr., Middletown North
Trailing 8-3 entering the third period, Benbrook rallied to win by fall in the third-to-lost bout, clinching a 36-35 win over Howell for the Lions’ first win over the Rebels in many years. The 175-pounder was 5-0 with four pins and is 15-1 on the season.
Jayce Cappello, Fr., Toms River East
An 8-0 week for the Raiders standout 132-pounder was headlined by a 12-3 major decision over Brick Memorial senior state qualifier Gavin Martin and a pin over Toms River South returning district runner-up Owen Beneciuk, an a 7-6 win over Ocean returning district champ Steven Perez. He is 16-3 this season.
Omar Carrillo-Solano, Jr., Wall
Carrillo-Solano delivered a 12-2 major decision over Paulsboro’s Hayden Holmes, a three-time district champion and three-time region medalist who was a state qualifier in 2023. The victory helped the Crimson Knights to a 41-25 win to finish third at the Cinnaminson Duals. The 113-pounder went 6-2 last week and 11-6 on the season.
A.J. Falcone, Sr., CBA
Falcone won the 165-pound title at the East Coast Catholic Championships, including an 8-1 win in sudden victory over Don Bosco Prep’s Santino Rodriguez, who was sixth in the state in 2023 and is a two-time district champion. Falcone was 10-0 for the week and also had a win over St. Peter’s Prep state qualifier Josh Piparo.
Levi Foote, So., Southern
Foote’s breakout season continued with a 5-1 week that was highlighted by a win by fall over Mout Olive returning state qualifier Tyler Cumming. His lone defeat came to West Essex’s Carmine Masi, who reached the third round of wrestlebacks at last season’s state tournament. Foote is 15-2 this season wrestling primarily at 190 pounds.
Matt Gould, Sr., St. John Vianney
Gould, a two-time state eighth-place finisher, won by decision over Southern returning state qualifier Cash McVey in the penultimate bout to help the Lancers to a 33-27 win over the Rams in a marquee matchup between top-10 teams in New Jersey.
Caden Langan, Sr., Toms River South
Langan reached 100 career wins with a 4-0 week that included four pins in the first period. The two-time region top-six place winner is 12-1 this season.
Harvey Ludington, Sr., Brick Memorial
Ludington, a two-time state champion and the No. 1-ranked 190-pounder in the nation, won a marquee matchup with Cranford senior Jordan Chapman by delivering a 16-6 major decision. Chapman, who is committed to Rutgers and was the state runner-up at 165 pounds last season and was third in the state at 157 as a sophomore, bumped up to face Ludington at 190 pounds. Ludington, who is signed to Iowa, opened a 10-2 lead after the first period and rebounded after allowing a takedown to win the match via bonus points. He was 7-0 during the week with five first-period pins and a 44-second technical fall.
Metin Metioglu, Sr., Matawan
Metioglu had been out of action since Dec. 13 but returned to the lineup with fury by going 7-0 with five pins at 215 pounds, including a win by fall over Ocean returning region fifth-place finisher Danny Farina.
Christian Reyes, Fr., Holmdel
Reyes won by decision over Lacey returning state qualifier Brendan Schuler to highlight a 4-1 week. The lone defeat came by decision at the hands of Colts Neck region champion Ethan Michaels. The 120-pounder is 12-2 this season.
Kevin Ruland, Sr., Red Bank
Ruland became Red Bank’s all-time wins leader with 108 career victories during a tri-match with Clifton and Old Bridge. The returning state eight-place finisher was 4-0 during the week and is 10-2 on the season.
Mike Seeley, Sr., Lacey
Seeley went 7-0 with four pins, a major decision, and a 6-4 win over Washington Township senior heavyweight Mitchell Sando, a returning region fifth-place finisher. Seeley is 15-2 this season.
Dominic Volek, So., Ocean
In a matchup of returning state qualifiers, Volek won by 13-2 major decision over Matawan’s Alexander Liss at 138 pounds to complete a 6-0 week. Volek had three pins, a major decision, and a technical fall and is now 14-1 on the season.
