Standouts from the NJSIAA boys lacrosse state quarterfinals
The NJSIAA boys lacrosse state tournament continued this week with the quarterfinal round where 12 Shore Conference teams competed and five advanced to Thursday’s sectional semifinals.
Here are eight standouts from the second round of the state tournament, presented by Top Mental Game.
Bailey Carroll, Sr., Midfield, Barnegat
Carroll scored twice during Barnegat’s 12-5 loss to Ocean City in the South Group 2 quarterfinals. He had two goals and two assists in a 20-2 first-round win over Cedar Creek.
Nate Cummings, Sr., Midfield, Toms River East
The Raiders’ standout senior midfielder scored five goals and delivered three assists when Toms River East beat Northern Burlington, 13-1, in the South Group 3 quarterfinals. East will now play in a sectional semifinal for the first time in program history. Cummings had a goal and three assists in a first-round win over Steinert.
Austin Edwards, Sr., Attack, Brick Memorial
Edwards scored twice when Brick Memorial fell to top-seeded Mooresetown in the South Group 3 quarterfinals. He also scored a goal during the Mustangs’ 7-6 win over Colts neck in the first round.
Patrick Freud, Jr., Midfield, Wall
Freud scored five goals and assisted on another to lead the Crimson Knights to a 15-3 win over Seneca. He has eight goals and seven assists in two state playoff games.
Luke Lydon, Jr., Attack, Rumson-Fair Haven
Lydon continued his excellent play with three goals and one assist in Rumson’s 11-2 win over Haddonfield in the South Group 1 quarterfinals. The Boston University commit scored four goals and added two assists in a 21-2 win over Middle Township in the first round.
Brandon Kunz, Sr., Attack, Manasquan
The Lehigh signee has been outstanding in his last three games with 14 goals, including a title-game record seven goals in a 15-14 overtime loss to Rumson in the Shore Conference Tournament final. Kunz scored four goals in an 18-4 South Group 2 quarterfinal win over Cinnaminson. He netted three goals with one assist in an opening-round win over Nottingham.
Collin Markoski, Sr., FOGO, Southern
Southern’s all-time leader in face-off wins has been dominant in the state tournament. Markoski won all 17 face-offs in a 15-3 win over Cherry Hill East in the South Group 4 quarterfinals. In the first round, he went 15-for-19 and tallied a goal and an assist in a 17-1 win over Rancocas Valley.
Jack Tiller, Jr., Goalie, Holmdel
The Hornets’ junior netminder reached 300 career saves by making 11 stops when Holmdel lost 10-7 to No. 2 seed West Morris in the North Group 2 quarterfinals. Tiller made five saves in an 8-1 win over Somerville in the first round.
