2026 Shore Conference Baseball Preview: Class C South

The “C” in Class C South implies that the division is third tier compared to its Class A South and Class B South counterparts. Some of that played out last year (Point Beach’s 24-5 win over Toms River South and Brick’s one-sided losses to Brick Memorial and Toms River East), but last year also showed there is real quality in the C Divisions of the Shore Conference.

In the case of Class C South, Brick finished No. 7 in the final Shore Sports Insider rankings after giving Northern Burlington its biggest scare in its run to the Group III title, while Toms River South made it to the South Jersey Group III final for the first time in 22 years, finishing one spot outside the Top 10 (behind another C Division team, Raritan).

Both Brick and Toms River South have been “promoted” to Class B South, which leaves C South open for a group of teams that could be this year’s version of the Green Dragons and the Indians. The top three teams in this projection feature a pair of teams that return a strong senior and junior group and another that moved down from Class B South with one of the Shore’s best all-around players on its roster.

In predicted order of finish

1. Barnegat

The Bengals have been an exceedingly young team over the past two seasons and while they had their moments last year, they put together a season consistent with a team that might be a year away. That year has arrived and now, Barnegat enters 2026 with experience, maturity and the scars that come with growing pains in what has been a very competitive Ocean County in recent years.

The Bengals championship ceiling rests, first and foremost, with its ace. Right-hander Nick Malinowski already has an All-Shore selection on his résumé heading into his junior campaign and he will headline a pitching staff that is looking for a breakout No. 2. The list of candidates includes seniors Ray Danbrowney and Liam Cooper, juniors Chris Santero and Nick Coles and sophomore Lorenzo Albruzzese.

Barnegat’s offense made strides last season thanks to marked improvement at several spots and it will take more of the same to take the next step this season. Shortstop Declan Brain established himself as a centerpiece player as a sophomore, while fellow junior Santero was the team’s top hitter while playing in the corner outfield. Catcher Jack Haviland, third baseman Nick Bruno and rightfielder Patrick Mackie are three seniors who have been steady contributors to the lineup, while Coles and Brennan Gallagher are two more juniors hoping to make a greater impact after solid showings as sophomores. Cooper, fellow senior Dominic Bucca and juniors Josh Kovacs and Jayden Schworn are the newcomers to watch for Barnegat as the Bengals aim to be this year’s version of Brick coming out of Class C South.

2. Lacey

It is hard to find two division contenders more similar to one another than are Barnegat and Lacey. Both teams finished 6-6 in the Class C South division, beat one another via 10-run rule during the regular season and in the rubber match, Barnegat beat the Lions, 2-1, in the Ocean County Tournament first round. On top of last year’s similarities, Lacey also brings back most of its 2025 team, only instead of an All-Shore pitcher, the Lions bring back an All-Shore shortstop in Brayden Messina.

With Messina leading the lineup coming off a season in which he hit better than .500, Lacey will be looking to beef up its offense with a supporting cast of players hoping to take a leap similar to the one Messina took a year ago. The infield remains intact, with senior Russell Davies back at first base, junior Joe Geiger returning at third after hitting over .300 with five extra-base hits as a junior, and Logan Resetar back at second. Resetar struggled to collect hits, but showed a good eye and some extra-base pop that suggests better days are ahead for him at the plate. In the outfield, senior Ryan Brewer will man centerfield as a potential top-of-the-order option, flanked by ace Zach Lodge and Nathan Baran. After catching last season, Baran moves to the outfield with fellow returning starter Evan Greenberg shifting to catcher after scoring 19 runs a season ago.

Lodge and Resetar will lead a pitching staff that has to replace ace Dylan Zech, who graduated after leading the team in innings and throwing a six-inning perfect game against Barnegat during his senior campaign. Lacey’s pitching and defense were fairly steady and should remain a strength with Lodge and Resetar on the mound, while Andrew Hollister, Dalton Johnson and sophomore Jayden McNeil look to build on their varsity experience from a year ago. The experience in the staff is not far off from the experience in the lineup, so if Barnegat is the favorite to open the year, Lacey has to be the second choice, if not the co-favorite.

3. St. Rose

Division re-alignment has not been kind to St. Rose over the years. When the Purple Roses have had their better rosters, they have been stuck in Class B Central, dominated most of the competition while spending most of the regular season gearing up to play Point Pleasant Beach in the most consequential games of the season. Only when those talented groups graduate has St. Rose built up the body of work to move into a more competitive division, which has usually resulted in an unsightly record, a drop back into a lighter division, and the cycle repeats.

This year feels different in that St. Rose’s move from B South to C South feels both appropriate, yet promising. The Purple Roses went 0-12 in B South last year, but did so with some legitimate talent and while remaining competitive relative to their record. Losing middle-of-the-order first baseman Tyler Hager to Red Bank Catholic and centerfielder Dom Crudo to Point Pleasant Boro is a hit to St. Rose’s ceiling, but the rest of the group remains mostly intact, led by Pitt commit and two-way, All-Shore standout Peter Nolan. Along with double-play partner James Alesso, Nolan will lead the infield and the pitching staff, giving St. Rose a quality one-two punch in the rotation in a winnable division, with Joe Ferrante, Nick Ferrante and Jake Whitehead providing some of the pitching depth.

St. Rose lost slugging catcher Frank Soos to Wall before last season and replaced him with another quality backstop in Lucas Ferlise, who returns after hitting comfortably over .300 with six extra-base hits. Whitehead and junior Mike Yorke bring back proven production in the corner outfield, with sophomore Tristan Ferlis moving into the starting role in centerfield. John Lyman and Nick Ferrante will see more time this season at the corner infield spots, while Jason Spallin and Jackson Liberty transfer Joe Loschiavo figure into the lineup as well. Freshman Kingston Balthazar and sophomores Ryan McCarther and Derek Hulse add to both the depth and young core of the Purple Roses, who will have a chance to both improve on the field and in the standings in 2026.

4. Manchester

For the first time on our preseason tour of Class C South, we encounter a team that will have to deal with some key graduations, both in impact and volume. It is not insurmountable, but Manchester will have to cover for the graduation of All-Shore ace Brenden Spaziano, as well as catcher Colton Sitarik and key contributors Anthony Carino, Gavin Stapon and Justin Uriarte.

The Hawks should remain solid in the middle of the infield with the returns of senior Damian Dowling and junior Brody Boyd. Coach Dave Beauchemin has been experimenting flipping the two infielders, with Boyd moving from his 2025 shortstop spot to second base and Dowling moving from second to shortstop. Sophomore Sam Spaziano and junior Justyce Garcia – Manchester’s best on-base hitter and slugging threat in 2025 – are in line for first-base time, with juniors Vincent Carino and Connor McKay in the third-base competition. Mike Fink leads an outfielder group with a pair of new starters out of the trio of centerfielder Sean Colling and rightfielders Dom Hunt and Connor McKay.

Manchester is unlikely to replace Spaziano with another dominant starter, but his younger brother, Sam, showed he is ready to get outs at the varsity level after doing so as a sophomore with a sub-3.00 ERA. The Hawks will back up the sophomore left-hander with Boyd, fellow junior Jimmy Censoplano and senior Tommy Meyer – all of whom worked at least 13 innings on the mound in 2025 with no one in the group posting an ERA worse than 4.01. Hunt, Garcia and Carino are also options on the mound for Manchester and if the pitching depth can take a committee approach to replacing Spaziano’s quality innings, the Hawks will be fighting for a top spot in the division in late April.

5. New Egypt

There are three Division I pitchers in the Class C South division and New Egypt has one of them. Fresh off leading New Egypt to its first boys basketball NJSIAA sectional title and becoming the program’s all-time lead scorer, Nolan Arnold will return to the mound for the Warriors as their ace and shortstop. The Iona commit headlines a solid returning group that was tough to beat with Arnold on the mound. The next step will be to stay competitive against the top teams in Class C South when Arnold is at shortstop, which will be up to junior Jake Milicia, sophomore Anthony Vidal and senior Dylan Harper – the trio at the forefront of the rotation beyond Arnold.

At the plate and in the field, New Egypt only has the graduation of Aidan Healy to address, but will also have to overcome the loss of returning senior catcher Lucas Burgos to a season-ending knee injury. That moves Evan Goldberg from outfield to catcher, while senior Toby Chao moves into the starting outfield with returning starters Justin Kramer and Paul Kennedy. On the infield, meanwhile, coach Mike Kibildis will deploy his two-way players, with Milicia at first, Harper at second, Arnold at shortstop and two-way newcomer Jake Merwin at third base. Vidal and Will Davis will cover first base and designated hitter as well, while sophomore Denzel Gonzales will play third base with any of Arnold, Harper or Merwin on the mound.

The loss of Burgos is a real setback and the team has a considerable gap to close between itself and the top of the division, but New Egypt brings back almost as much varsity experience as do Barnegat and Lacey, plus a true difference-maker on the mound in Arnold. With some progress at the plate and improvement in rotation depth, the Warriors could surprise in C South and be a Group I sleeper in the spring as well.

6. Pinelands

Last year was an important one for Pinelands baseball just to get the bad taste of a 0-18 2024 season out of the team’s collective mouth, which it immediately did by run-ruling St. Joseph of Hammonton in last year’s season-opener. There were not many high points after that, although Pinelands did win two of three vs. Manchester, including a preliminary-round win over the Hawks in the Ocean County Tournament. Building on last year will be difficult for the Wildcats, who graduated their top two 2025 hitters in catcher Nate Sofield and outfielder Logan Hammer and will have to climb out of the cellar with more production to replace than most of their competition.

Pitching was a struggle for Pinelands in 2025, but the mound group is back and determined to continue to improve, which it did over the course of last season. Landon Seidenfader was a workhorse and left-handed classmate Ethan Kuna was not far behind in innings, while working his ERA down under 3.00 by the end of the year. Tyler Dean and Jacob Haywood also gave coach Dan Mulligan double-digit innings and will give the Wildcats four seniors to lead what should be an improved rotation.

Dean, Kuna, Haywood and fellow senior Paul Dunn will help anchor the lineup, with Dean returning to centerfield and the top of the order, while Dunn plays in a corner and Kuna and Haywood man the corner infield. Junior and out-of-state transfer Chris Husni is the newcomer to watch at shortstop and on the mound after he made a major impact on the basketball court for a division-winning Wildcats team. Sophomore Connor Quigley will take over at catcher, juniors Victor Giorgio and Nico Ramos will play key roles in the infield and Sawyer Hodgdon is a freshman to watch in the outfield. With a big debut from Husni and improvement from an experienced pitching staff, the Wildcats could be the ultimate benefactors in a wide-open Class B South.
