2026 Shore Conference Baseball Preview: Class A North
With three non-public schools that annually compete for a top 10 ranking in New Jersey, the Class A North division is the Shore Conference’s most unforgiving baseball division, especially for the three public school teams tasked with competing against Christian Brothers Academy, Red Bank Catholic and Ranney – twice on the field and in the division standings throughout April and in early May.
It is not easy for the three powerhouse teams either, but it helps to have an army of big-time pitchers, which is why CBA enters 2026 the Shore Conference favorite once again. Ranney brings back most of its 2025 team, led by an athletic, powerful group of position players. Red Bank Catholic, meanwhile, boasts one of the best outfields in the conference, which will be at the center of a scary top-to-bottom lineup.
Middletown South, Manalapan and Howell have the unenviable task of taking on all three of Monmouth County’s non-public power programs during the regular season, but all three should have their moments during the season.

In predicted order of finish
1. Christian Brothers Academy
The Colts finished No. 2 in the conference behind Shore Conference Tournament champion Brick Memorial in 2025 and lost an epic extra-inning Non-Public A championship game to Don Bosco, so there is unfinished business for this year’s Colts team. Virginia commit Sean Loggie, Michigan commit Dylan Iwanyk and Northeastern commit Danny DiTullio give coach Marty Kenney Jr. an overpowering trio to proven starters, including two from the left side in Loggie and DiTullio. Dan Pardini and Declan Doogan are two more experienced pitchers to complement the big three, while sophomore Gavin Peters and freshman Ray Fuchs are the underclassmen to watch going forward in CBA’s impressive pitching staff.
In the field, the Colts have three key starters to replace in catcher Danny Tsimbinos, centerfielder Will Fahey and third baseman Danny Russo. New starters Griffin Killcullen (catcher) and Parker Hughes (third base) saw key at-bats last season both will need to settle in at their respective positions. Jayden Matejicka has been a versatile defender during his sophomore and junior seasons and shifts to centerfield to replace Fahey, while Ryan Wetmore and Alex Fiore man the corners as returning starters. Jared Matejicka gives the Colts a superb athlete and fielder at field base, while Colin Hoverter and Dylan Reynolds return as the double-play combination, with Reynolds hitting his way into the starting lineup as a sophomore last season.
Even without graduated All-Shore bullpen ace Shane Langan, the pitching staff remains the best on paper in the Shore Conference by a wide margin, which is why the Colts should be considered the early favorite to reclaim the Shore Conference Tournament title while also chasing their first Non-Public A championship since 2015.

2. Ranney
With respect to the overall number of games played, Ranney played a light schedule with only 21 last season, but those 21 games were against stiff competition and sharpened the edges of a team that returns seven hitters from a high-scoring lineup and most of the innings from a quality, young pitching staff. Junior shortstop and LSU commit Ricky Lopez is the headliner at the plate and in the field after clubbing 11 homers and slugging over 1.000 in his high-school debut. Second baseman Robbie Wrobel, catcher Brody Gargiulo, centerfielder Brody Mauro and versatile two-way players Nate Fuller and Justin Kauffman are all back as juniors as well, forming a nucleus that coach Pat Geroni hopes can make Ranney a force over the next two seasons.
As has been the case during Geroni’s tenure, Ranney will be counting on a number of underclassmen to fill spots in the field, led by returning sophomore Braden Cox in the outfield. Freshmen Jake Abrams and Dave Cantin are in the mix to cover graduated at-bats at third base and in the outfield, while sophomore Nico Owimirn will serve as a utility role on the infield.
On the mound, Kauffman and Fuller return off strong sophomore seasons and hard-throwing right-hander Noah Hynes is the lone senior projected to contribute. Junior J.L. Gallina lost most of his sophomore season to injury, but was impressive on the mound as a freshman and will round out the top four in a pitching staff that will also try out Abrams, Brody McCorckle and J.J. Ballard as freshmen. With all that talent and with Hynes the only senior, Ranney has a chance to plant its flag at the top of the Shore Conference for the next two seasons, at least.

3. Red Bank Catholic
Out of the three A North Goliaths, Red Bank Catholic has the most to replace from 2025, when the Caseys finished third in the division, but No. 3 in the final Shore Sports Insider Top 10 thanks to a Monmouth County Tournament championship and a trip to the Shore Conference Tournament final. That said, RBC still returns a wealth of talent, led by an outfield group that includes All-Shore First-Team rightfielder Charlie Stumberger as a senior, plus Luke Lonczak and Luke Scaturro as juniors. Lonczak has mashed at the plate during his first two seasons, the second of which was limited due to a torn ACL he suffered in the fall of 2024.
RBC also returns one of the Shore’s best catchers in senior Aiden Funk, who also missed a brief stint with a hand injury last season and still managed to drive in 24 runs while hitting just a shade under .400. Funk will lead a pitching staff that lost its co-aces (Ryan Prior and Luke Meyers) to graduation, but brings back proven varsity arms in Glen Popes, Anthony Scaglione, Sam French and Joe Mauro. French impressed as a freshman and is expected to slot into the rotation during the second half of April after getting off to a late start in his build-up for the season.
The infield is where RBC has the most questions to answer, with Drew Cannon – who shifts from third base to shortstop – the lone returnee among last year’s starter group. St. Rose transfer and All-Shore basketball player Tyler Hager is a loud answer at first base and he will also provide an option on the mound. Landon Laido returns with some experience as he looks to take over at third base and third-year starter Jake Frankel can also play some third after he put up gaudy numbers as a designated hitter a year ago. However the infield shakes out, defense will be a priority for coach Buddy Hausmann considering the offense from catcher and the outfield should remain strong and the re-tooled pitching staff could use some early confidence.

4. Middletown South
The schedule-makers of the Shore Conference appear to have it out for Middletown South, because the Eagles will be hard-pressed to find a win in their first seven games of the season. After opening with perennial Group IV title contender Hunterdon Central, the Eagles’ first three division series of the season are against Red Bank Catholic, Ranney and CBA, which takes Middletown South through April 16.
Fortunately for Middletown South, it has proven to be a tough opponent on the big boys of A North. Senior ace Peter DeNicola pitched a gem to beat Prior and Red Bank Catholic a year ago and DeNicola will be back to lead a pitching staff that will be leaning on greater contributions from seniors Tommy Costello and Mike Gough, plus a wave of juniors ready to step in and help shape the core of the team over these next two seasons.
Three returning senior starters will anchor Middletown South’s lineup, as well as its defense. Centerfielder Jack Concordia has already turned in an All-Shore season as a sophomore and was solid again as a junior despite battling a shoulder injury for part of the season. Lucas Grigos returns behind the plate after a breakout junior campaign and Jack Dougherty moves from second base to shortstop to lead the infield. Mike Mullane, meanwhile, leads a group of juniors after showing he can handle varsity pitching in 30 2025 plate appearances, while seniors Mike Marinich and Matthew Korth also aim to add length to the lineup. If Middletown South can steal a win or two in those first seven games and keep spirits up in the dugout, the Eagles will be a dangerous team heading toward May.

5. Manalapan
The Braves opened their 2025 season knowing their pitching would carry them, but they probably were not expecting how true that would be. Leo Vitale, Kevin Rusinak and Dylan Kane made for a formidable trio on the mound, but the Braves struggled to score runs and it kept the pressure on those pitchers to be perfect. For this year’s Manalapan team to give CBA, RBC and Ranney problems, it will have to make strides at the plate, not to mention replace the group of senior pitchers who graduated.
Shortstop Anthony Foti is Manalapan’s most established player after he put up a solid junior season – his second as a varsity starter at shortstop. Third baseman Rob DiStefano, catcher Robert Cruz and first baseman James Vitucci all return as starters, with Vincent Mateis taking over at second base after holding his own at the plate in a part-time role. Senior Brandon Heller adds another quality bat to the lineup as the projected DH, while coach Brian Boyce lines up a completely new group in the outfield.
The x-factor in the lineup and on the mound is likely to be freshman Josh Sosinov, who is ready to plug in on the infield, as well as covering some of the many lost innings to graduation. Peter Rispoli, meanwhile, is the most proven of the returning pitchers after he stepped up to deliver 16 strong innings of work as a junior. Left-handers Noah Feldman and Brady Costello will also be key cogs in the rotation, which will have to remain a strength for the Braves to contend in an unforgiving division.

6. Howell
For the first time since 2009, a head coach other than Eric Johnson will lead Howell into the season and first-year coach Miguel Arroyo finds himself with quite a challenge on his hands as he takes over the program. The Rebels have a solid enough roster to tackle the Class B North slate they faced a year ago, but moving into Class A North off a third-place finish in B North while also replacing four of their top position players and two starters on the mound will be a tall task.
Although Logan Koeppel, Vinny Agnello and Aaron Wojenski are big bats Brody Loch a strong defensive catcher to replace, Howell does return five starting hitters in Matt Vetrano, Ryan Todisco, Waylon Cavanaugh, Jack Quinn and Connor Acker. Todisco is capable at both shortstop and second base, while Cavanaugh can also play shortstop, as well as the outfield. Quinn could return to the outfield or play third base, while Acker is locked in at an outfield spot and Matt Vetrano as the first base or DH. Derek Liotti and Connor Halvorsen also got a helping of varsity at-bats, giving Arroyo some options thanks to all the positional flexibility.
On the mound, Howell also brings back three pitchers who worked at least 15 innings, led by right-hander Jackson Vetrano and left-hander Kurtis Lovegren. Vetrano lines up as the No. 1, while Lovegren was a coaches dream last year, issuing just three walks in 20 2/3 innings. John Bertan is also back with 15 innings of experience, while Quinn, Cavanaugh and Liotti look to add some depth to a staff that will have to deal with some deadly lineups playing in Class A North.
