NJSIAA Tournament
Sectional Championships
Central Jersey Group 3
(1) Northern Burlington 8, (2) Brick Memorial 4
The Greyhounds stormed out of the gate with six runs in the first inning and Brick Memorial’s comeback effort came up short as the Greyhounds won their first sectional title in 10 years by denying the Mustangs their first ever.
Nick Filliponi had the big swing during the six-run first — a three-run home run to centerfield that made the Northern Burlington lead 5-0. Jimmy Musser hit a two-run double to open the scoring in the first and later cracked a solo home run that gave the Greyhounds some breathing room in the third inning, 7-4.
Brick Memorial posted four runs in the top of the second to get back in the game, with two runs scoring on two different catcher’s interference calls. The other two runs scored on a bases-loaded walk and an error.
Northern Burlington will host Toms River East Monday in the Group III semifinal, with the winner earning a spot in the state final June 14 at Veterans Park in Hamilton.

South Jersey Group 3
(2) Toms River East 6, (5) Toms River South 1
Matt Ferrara and Mike Vaccarino each hit a home run, junior Lucas Melton took one away with a spectacular catch and senior right-hander Dan Nafziger struck out a career-high 13 in a five-hit complete game that delivered the Raiders their first sectional championship since 2006 in the form of a championship victory over the rival Indians.
After sophomore Joey DiMeo scored the game’s first run on a throwing error on a steal of third base, Ferrara crushed a solo shot just over the 354-foot sign in left-centerfield for a 2-0 Raiders lead.

Vaccarino extended the lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run bomb to leftfield as part of a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Toms River East extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Nafziger to score DiMeo with his second run scored of the game.

Toms River South loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning and brought catcher Ben McEwan to the plate. The left-handed swinging junior launched a deep fly ball that had the distance for a grand slam, but Melton made a leaping catch above the fence to bring it back for the second out of the inning. Christian Mascaro tagged from third on the play and scored, but Nafziger struck out the next batter to end the threat.
WEB GEM: Is that Endy Chavez? No, that’s Lucas Melton robbing Ben McEwan of a grand slam in the top of the 6th inning. No double play and it goes down as a sac fly, but that might be the play of the year. 5-1 East in the 6th. pic.twitter.com/Yh3vhKdsnN

Chase Caswell gave Toms River East another insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, which set the stage for Nafziger to pitch his second complete game in a championship setting. The senior right-hander struck out 10 in the Raiders’ 3-1 Ocean County Tournament championship win over Brick Memorial.
Aiden Lynch led off the top of the seventh with a double, but Nafziger retired the next two batters on a strikeout and pop-out. Jaden Geremia then lifted a deep fly ball to rightfield, where Melton ran back and caught it for the final out.
Toms River East will play Monday at Northern Burlington with a spot in the state final on the line.

Central Jersey Group 1
(1) Middlesex 7, (2) Point Beach 1
Starting pitcher Tommy Conroy jumpstarted a Point Beach scoring rally in the top of the first, but the Blue Jays grabbed the lead by the second inning and sophomore Dominic Long shut down the Garnet Gulls the rest of the way to snap Point Beach’s run of three straight sectional championships while sending Middlesex to its first Central Group I title since 2021.
Conroy singled, stole second base and went to third on a bunt single by sophomore Brody Powers to set up Point Beach with an immediate scoring threat. Junior catcher Dan Lubach plated the run with an RBI fielder’s choice — his Shore-leading 47th RBI of the season.
Long tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first and Dylan Ianiero gave Middlesex a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the second.
After giving up back-to-back singles to Conroy and Powers to start the game, Long retired the next 17 batters he faced before Powers singled with two out in the top of the sixth for his second hit of the game. Long retired the next batter and set down the side in order in the seventh to finish a sectional-final, three-hit complete game in just 78 pitches.
Middlesex will host South Jersey champion Schalick Monday in the Group I semifinal.
