No. 1 CBA 81, Holmdel 44
Junior Avery Lynch scored a game-high 26 points and 11 CBA players contributed to the scoring in a convincing Colts (7-1, 1-0) win over the Hornets (3-2, 0-1) in their first game of the season vs. a Shore Conference opponent.
Sophomore Izayah Cooper added 15 points and sophomore Aidan Dotzler chipped in 10 off the bench for CBA. Senior Jack Vallillo scored 14 points and senior Luke Schiess threw in 10 to lead Holmdel.
Class A Central
No. 5 Freehold Twp. 85, Manalapan 63
Junior Jake Schultzel enjoyed a career night with 33 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots as the Patriots (6-2, 1-0) rolled to a win over the Braves (3-3, 0-1) to open their Class A Central schedule in winning fashion.
Junior John O’Neill pitched in 16 points, four assists and three blocked shots, while fellow junior Dakota Lasater added 10 points and four assists for Freehold Township, which opened up a 39-25 lead by halftime.
Senior Dean Aviles scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half to lead Manalapan, while junior Greyson Ferraro poured in 20 in the loss.
Middletown South 65, St. John Vianney 63 (OT)
Freshman Ryan Gannon scored a game-high 27 points, including the game-tying free throws with 4.5 seconds left in regulation, followed by all 11 Middletown South points in overtime as the Eagles (6-2, 1-0) rode their freshman duo to a hard-fought win over the Lancers (3-6, 0-1).
Gannon was fouled on a three-point attempt in the final seconds of regulation and hit two of the three attempts to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, he carried the Middletown South offense and his three-pointer with 2:35 left gave the Eagles a 59-57 lead they would not give back.
Freshman Evan Wells backed up his classmate with 15 points, sophomore Dom Tuzzeo added nine and both Wells and Tuzzeo shot 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point line.
Junior Justin Togans scored 16 points and classmate Nicky Mejia added 15 to lead St. John Vianney.
Class A South
No. 8 Southern 56, No. 6 Jackson 40
Junior Noah Perna scored 22 points to go with nine rebounds and senior Jake Sliwinski filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds and eight assists to pace the Rams (4-3, 1-0) to a key, early-season, Class A South victory over the Jaguars (6-2, 0-1).
Junior Gavin Gerckens delivered 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, with six of his points coming in the fourth quarter, during which Southern outscored Jackson, 19-9, to secure the win. The Rams trailed, 16-12, through one quarter, seized a 23-22 lead by halftime and went to the fourth leading, 37-31, after Perna drew a foul on a three-point attempt and nailed all three free throws.
Senior George Boley led Jackson with 18 points.
Central 61, Barnegat 34
Sophomore Jaxen Carter led a balanced Central offense with 15 points and five assists and junior Cijier Yates posted a double-double as the Golden Eagles (4-3, 1-0) broke open a close game with the Bengals (4-3, 0-1) at halftime with a big second half.
Yates and fellow junior Derek Roth each netted 12 points, with Yates also pulling down 11 rebounds for Central, which outscored Barnegat, 47-19, over the final 19-plus minutes after Barnegat took a 15-14 lead just past the midway point of the second quarter.
Freshman Chancellor Joseph and junior Anthony Dringus each scored six points to lead Barnegat.
Class B North
Ranney 58, Colts Neck 52
Senior Shaan Nayar led four Ranney scorers in double-figures with 20 points and also contributed eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in leading the Panthers to a win over the reigning Group III champion Cougars.
Sophomore A.J. Mizhir and juniors Andrew Mardahaev and Ben Schaeffer all scored 10 points apiece to back up Nayar’s team-high total. Schaeffer also pulled down eight rebounds and dealt out three assists, while Mardahaev grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots for Ranney.
Sophomore Nate Sloane scored a game-high 23 points and senior teammate Dillon Younger poured in 15 to lead Colts Neck.
No. 4 Red Bank Catholic 53, No. 10 Marlboro 52
Senior James Hankowski hit a tie-breaking three-pointer from the top of the key with 30 seconds left and the Caseys (6-2, 1-0) prevailed in a thriller over the Mustangs (5-2, 1-0) in Red Bank.
Hankowski led Red Bank Catholic with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back trips to start the fourth quarter after Marlboro took a 43-38 lead coming out of the third. Junior Tyler Hager added 11 points and six blocked shots and senior Ryan Saxton scored seven of his nine in the first quarter for Red Bank Catholic.
Junior Nolan Gong led Marlboro with 17 points, including nine points on three three-pointers during a 19-9 third-quarter run by the Mustangs that gave them the five-point lead heading to the fourth. Junior Dylan McEwan scored seven of his 14 points in the third and senior teammate Christian Elmasri threw in 13 points for Marlboro.
Class B Central
Matawan 42, Ocean 37
Senior Colin Reitmann scored 16 points to go with five rebounds and three assists and the Huskies (4-5, 2-0) overcame an 11-point third-quarter deficit to top the Spartans (5-5, 2-1) on the road and take the early lead in the Class B Central division standings.
Ocean led, 31-20, after a corner three-pointer by freshman Omar Ayyash with 1:50 left in the third quarter, then went the next 8:25 of game time without scoring a point. During that span, Matawan piled up an 18-0 run that turned the 11-point deficit into a 38-31 lead after sophomore Cayson Williams finished a shot in the paint.
Sophomore Brody Bell ended the dry spell for Ocean with a corner three-pointer and Ayyash buried one from the opposite corner the next time down to pull Ocean within 38-37 with 56 seconds left. Ocean had a chance to tie the game or take the lead while down 39-37 and another chance to tie down, 40-37, but the Huskies stopped them on the first chance, followed by a Reitmann steal with 3.5 seconds left. Reitmann then hit two free throws to ice the game.
Senior Trevor Cole and junior Christian Baskerville each added 11 points for Matawan, with Baskerville also contributing three assists and four steals. Ayyash led Ocean with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Bell scored nine points on three three-pointers, and senior Aidan Saint Louis contributed eight points, eight rebounds and four steals in the loss.
Class B South
Point Beach 51, Brick Memorial 45
Junior Ryan Mahoney led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points and the Garnet Gulls (7-2, 1-0) erased an 11-point deficit through one quarter to beat the Mustangs (4-5, 0-1) for the second time in the last nine days.
Senior Jacob Edgecomb and junior George Breckenridge each added 11 points for Point Beach, which outscored Brick Memorial, 14-5, in the third quarter to even the score, 33-33, heading to the fourth and 32-17 in the second half all together. Junior Tyler Preston also pitched in eight points in the win.
Senior Sean Collins poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Brick Memorial, with senior Austin Braaten adding eight points in the loss.
Point Boro 51, Toms River North 43
Senior Hunter Hynes scored 19 points while pulling in 12 rebounds, which led the way for the Panthers (3-3, 1-0) in a win over the Mariners (3-6, 0-1) in the Class B South division opener for both teams.
Senior Jovin Steinmetz added 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Point Boro.
Toms River East 59, Toms River South 52
Sophomore Brady Gillen led four Toms River East players in double-figure scoring with 18 points and classmate Tommy Intintola posted a double-double to lead the Raiders (5-2, 1-0) to a road win over the crosstown rival Indians (5-4, 0-1) in the division-opener for both squads.
Intintola finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Chase Baillie pitched in 14 points and six rebounds for Toms River East. Senior Shamus O’Grady also threw in 11 points and five rebounds in the win.
Senior Jake Myers posted 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while classmate Shane Gambarony went for 16 points, four assists and three steals to lead Toms River South. Senior Kharii Pringle also netted 10 points in the loss.
Class C South
Manchester 40, Brick 38
Senior Malik Pharmes hit a pair of game-winning free throws with one second left and the Hawks (2-7, 1-0) came through in the clutch to beat the Green Dragons (1-7, 0-1) in the C South opener for both teams.
Junior Orion Andrews led Manchester with 14 points and sophomore Justin Roberts hit all four of his free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Senior Matt Goodfellow paced Brick with nine points and nine rebounds.
New Egypt 57, Lakewood 39
Senior Nolan Arnold scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first half, then scored eight in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors (5-3, 2-0) close out a win over the Piners (0-6, 0-1).
Senior Clyde Ferris added 14 points for New Egypt, which led, 32-15, at halftime before Lakewood pulled to within 41-32 heading to the fourth quarter. Senior Cris Rosario scored 17 points to lead Lakewood, with sophomore Carlito Anderson scoring five of his eight points in Lakewood’s 17-point third quarter.
Pinelands 44, Lacey 38
Junior Chris Husni scored a game-high 16 points and dished out five assists to spark the Wildcats (5-2, 0-1) in opening up their Class C South division schedule with a win over the visiting Lions (1-8, 0-2).
Junior Tyler Garcia added 10 points and classmate Donny Johnston pitched in six points and eight rebounds for Pinelands, which took control of the game by outscoring Lacey, 12-4, in the third quarter to go up, 32-22, heading to the fourth.
Junior Kenny Monica scored 15 points and pulled in eight rebounds to lead Lacey, while senior Teagan Gilliespie threw in 11 points and classmate Declan Meehan netted eight in the loss.
Non-Conference
Henry Hudson 85, Thomas Edison Charter 48
Junior JoJo Newell shattered his previous career-high point total with a Shore Conference season-high 42 points as the Admirals (5-2) coasted to a win over Thomas Edison Charter (1-6).
Newell set a career-high with 33 points in Monday’s win over Asbury Park and blew past that mark 24 hours later by converting 17 shots from the field (one three-pointer) and knocking down seven free throws.
Junior Jack Carlstrom added 18 points and classmate Blakely Smith chipped in eight for Henry Hudson.
