Toms River South 59, Shore 48

Seniors Shane Gambarony and Kharii Pringle combined for 49 of Toms River South’s 59 points and the Indians (1-0) opened their season with a win over the Blue Devils (0-1). Gambarony finished with a game-high 27 points, with Pringle pouring in 22.

Senior Ryan Barham led Shore with 17 points, while senior Andrew Barham added 13 and senior Finn Watson chipped in 10 in the loss.

Brick Memorial 61, Neptune 30

Senior Sean Collines scored 18 points to go with six rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals to help pace the Mustangs (1-0) to a win over the Scarlet Fliers (0-1) in the season-opener for both teams.

Senior Jason Lajara added 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for Brick Memorial, while sophomore St. Rose transfer Luca Begashvili posted 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in the win.

Senior Jordan Pierre led Neptune with nine points.

Matawan 60, Lakewood 20

Senior Colin Reitmann led a balanced scoring effort with 11 points and the Huskies (1-1) overwhelmed the Piners (0-1) with 21-1 first quarter that sent them on their way to their first win of the season.

Senior Trevor Cole added 10 points, senior Daamir Darby posted nine, sophomore Sean Euell pitched in seven and senior Shane Gallagher threw in six for Matawan. Sophomore Tyrese Jones led Lakewood with seven points.

No. 5 Southern 68, Toms River North 56

Senior Jake Sliwinski scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to go with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals as the Rams (2-0) overcame a slow start and the ejection of All-Shore junior guard Noah Perna to beat the Mariners (1-1) on the road.

Perna posted 13 points, 4 rebounds and three assists before getting involved in a shoving exchange with Toms River North junior Wes Tanner, who was also ejected with under three minutes to play in the third quarter.

Southern led, 41-33, at the time of the ejection and Sliwinski immediately scored on three consecutive possessions as Southern built up a 53-38 lead heading to the fourth quarter after Sliwinski set up a three-pointer by junior Anthony Buczynski in the final seconds of the quarter.

Buczynski stepped up to score 15 points on four three-pointers, as well as three free throws after drawing a foul on a three-point attempt. Senior Reality White chipped in eight points, six rebounds and three assists, while junior Gavin Gerckens blocked three shots to go with six points.

Sophomore Jake Greenberg led Toms River North with 18 points and four assists and junior Jackson Sias pitched in 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in the loss. Tanner poured in nine points before being disqualified in the third quarter.

Raritan 66, Lacey 62

Senior Mario Diamantis scored 21 points while dishing out five steals and senior Ian Mullan posted 16 points and 12 rebounds to power the Rockets (1-0) past the Lions (0-3) in their season-opener.

Junior Eric Berg also netted 12 points for Raritan, which erased a 40-29 third-quarter deficit to take the lead with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Junior Kenny Monica and senior Teagan Gillespie each scored 20 points to lead Lacey, with Monica also chipping in eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Declan Meehan also contributed nine points in the loss.

Pinelands 52, Barnegat 41

Juniors Cayden Lucas and Donny Johnston scored 12 points apiece and the Wildcats (1-1) raced out to a 16-point halftime lead en route to a win over the Bengals (1-1). Junior Tyler Garcia added 10 points and senior Josh Barongo went for six points and 14 rebounds for Pinelands.

Freshman Myles Joseph scored 13 points and twin brother Chancellor Joseph added 11 to lead Barnegat, which also got eight points from senior Donovan Paul.

Red Bank at Manalapan — Suspended

Manalapan jumped out to a 17-7 lead on Red Bank, at which point the game was halted due to moisture on the court that rendered the playing surface too dangerous to play on, according to the game officials, school officials and coaches. The game is expected to be resumed at the point of suspension at a later date and time yet to be determined.

This was the second game at the Shore in as many days to be suspended because of a slippery court, with the Manasquan at Point Boro varsity girls game meeting the same fate on Tuesday.
