Senior Christian Laverde scored off a cross from junior Eduardo Russo 89 seconds into the match and the Braves defense and sophomore goalkeeper Chase Lee made it hold up in an opening-day win over the Lions.

 

Non-Division

Point Beach 2, Manchester 0

Junior Dylan Ryan struck in the 18th minute off a feed from sophomore Brody Powers and sophomore Landon Hobermann added an insurance goal in the 60th as the Garnet Gulls opened their season with a win over the defending Class B South co-champion Hawks. Senior Bennett Mayer assisted Hobermann’s goal, while junior goalkeeper Bennett Moberg posted double-digit saves to earn the shutout.

No. 6 Marlboro 2, Freehold Twp. 0

Sophomore Alec Roberman and senior Jake Langella each scored a goal in the second half and the Mustangs (2-0) shut out the Patriots (0-2) for their second straight win to open the season. Senior Trevor Barrett — who scored the golden goal in Thursday’s overtime win over Wall — pitched in with an assist, while senior goalkeeper Tim Yafutov made six saves to record the clean sheet.

Lakewood 3, Calvary Academy 1

Kevin Martinez scored a goal in each half and Dennis Cardosa picked up one for himself as well as the Piners upended Calvary Academy to win their season-opener. Martinez scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 21st minute and added his second goal in the 43rd minute.

Manville 3, New Egypt 1

Bryce Giordano scored off a corner kick by Braeden Fischer for the lone New Egypt goal as the Warriors dropped their opener to their first season as a member of the Shore Conference to the Mustangs.

No. 2 CBA 5, Bergen Catholic 2

Senior Taylor Ryan scored twice in the first 14 minutes and the Colts (2-1) stormed out to a 4-0 first-half lead on the way to a resounding road win over the Crusaders (1-1).

Both of Ryan’s goals came off rebounds —  the first of which came in the eighth minute after an initial shot hit the post. Junior Ryan Asadi scored to make it 3-0 in the 24th minute off a feed from classmate Nick Silva and junior James Brady knocked in a loose ball open up a 4-0 CBA lead in the 36th minute.

After Bergen Catholic pulled with 4-2, senior Charlie Messano headed in a corner kick by senior Carlos Cano to cap the scoring in the 66th minute.
