Shore Conference Tournament
Group Stage
Group C
Central 3, No. 8 Howell 1
Junior Ricky Pasqualini buried the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute and senior Jordan Benzon scored the clinching in the last second to put the exclamation point on a Golden Eagles (8-4) win over the Rebels (8-4) that clinched Central a spot in the Shore Conference Tournament.
Junior Ilyas Ciltepe opened the scoring off a pass from Benzon in the 16th minute and eventually returned the favor with a long clearance that played Benzon into the game-ending breakaway.
Central nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute one a shot by Jordan Benzon that bounced into the goal after a Howell defender deflected it with his hand. The officials blew the whistle on the handball, negating the goal and awarding Central a penalty kick instead. Howell sophomore goalkeeper Brady Murphy denied the ensuing kick by Benzon to keep Howell’s deficit at 1-0.
Howell drew even in the 58th with a left-footed strike by senior Nick Turturro from just beyond the top of the 18-yard box.
Pasqualini answered five minutes later when a failed clearance landed at his feet and he buried a 20-yard tracer to the upper 90.
Junior goalkeeper Kaden Stout held up his end for Central, saving a dangerous shot by Turturro in the first half and making a leaping save on an on-target shot by senior Kam Brown in the 77th minute.
With the win, Central guaranteed itself a spot in the SCT and the Golden Eagles would win Group C — which comes with a first-round bye — if Red Bank defeats or ties Shore Regional on Friday.
A Shore Regional win would not only knock Central into second place in the group; it would also knock Howell out of the SCT. The Rebels — who played without key starters Tye Maser and Tyler Borenstein on Thursday — were the runners-up in each of the past two Shore Conference Tournaments and brought back two First-Team All-Shore attackers (Turturro and Maser) and seven other players with starting experience.
