Group Stage

Group A

Toms River East 1, No. 9 Holmdel 0

Senior Brandon Dacunha connected ona 28-yard shot in the seventh minute of overtime and the Raiders pulled out a season-opening win over the Hornets, which gives Toms River East an early advantage in the Shore Conference Tournament group stage.

Toms River East owned the edge in shots (8-5) and shots on goal (3-1) both before and after Dacunha’s winner. Toms River East earned a corner kick in the tail-end of the first overtime period and the Holmdel defense knocked the ball to the top of the box. Dacunha settled it with one touch and skipped a shot from beyond the top of the box past diving Holmdel goalkeeper Brian Ilewski for the game-winner.

Holmdel had the two closest misses of regulation, with junior Luke Farrugia drilling the crossbar in the 44th minute and Holmdel missing an open net in the 73rd after a cross by senior Stepan Kapranov made it across the mouth of the goal.

 

Group E

Ocean 5, Asbury Park 0

Sophomore Connor Shaw finished two goals and the Spartans coasted to a win over the Blue Bishops to open up their season and pick up three points in the group stage standings.

Senior Noor Eraky, sophomore Luciano Ibarra and senior Jacob Gomez accounted for the other Ocean goals, while junior Lucas Renvoize assisted two goals.

 

Group G

No. 6 Marlboro 1, Wall 0 (OT)

Senior Trevor Barrett scored the golden goal in the 87th minute and the Mustangs edged the Crimson Knights (1-1) to open the season and pick up three critical points in the SCT group stage.

Barrett took a pass from classmate Jake Langella on the left side, cut in toward the goal and slotted a shot inside the near post to finish the clincher.

 

Regular Season

Class B North

Raritan 6, Freehold Boro 1

Pete Geoghan, Sean Burnett and Owen Brackett each scored two goals and the Rockets wiped away an early 1-0 deficit to beat the Colonials and give coach Greg Casha his first career win.

Sophomore Humberto Hernandez gave Freehold Boro a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 21st minute before Geoghan finished a pass from fellow senior Travis Evernham for the equalizer in the 36th.

Raritan scored five goals in the second half to blow the game open, starting with the game-winner by Geoghan off an assist from Carter Kelly in the 48th. Burnett then assisted a goal by Brackett in the 57th and scored his first in the 65th off a pass from fellow senior Alan Warren. Burnett converted a penalty kick for the fifth goal and Brackett’s second goal of the game capped the scoring in the 78th.

 

Non-Division

Lacey 3, Brick 0

Junior Tanner Grozinski scored a goal and assisted one by senior Aidan Fitzgerald within the first 12 minutes and the Lions took down the Green Dragons (0-2) in the season-opener for both teams. Grozinski scored in the fifth minute off a pass from classmate Aiden Schmidt, then slipped a pass to Fitzgerald to set up a 12th-minute goal.

Junior Anthony Introna capped the scoring in the 63rd minute by finishing a pass from senior Colin Hayes.

No. 3 Colts Neck 3, Toms River South 0

Senior Kyle Moore scored a goal in each half and sophomore Sean Moore also scored one after intermission as the Cougars blanked the Indians for a season-opening win. Sean Moore assisted both goals by his older brother and converted a pass from senior Sam Gershon for his second-half score.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Ravelo saved two point-blank shots with Colts Neck leading, 1-0, and made a third after the Cougars went up by two goals.

St. John Vianney 2, Ranney 1

Juniors Mason Boles and Dominick Fuoco each scored first-half goals and the Lancers opened their season with a win over the Panthers (1-1).

Red Bank Catholic 4, Donovan Catholic 3

Leo Asfendis scored the game-winner in the 78th minutes and the Caseys pulled out a season-opening win over the Griffins. Senior Andrew Torregrossa scored two goals and assisted another by freshman James Main, while junior Teagan McCarthy dished out a pair of assists — including one on the game-winner.

 

Non-Conference

Allentown 3, Middletown South 0

Cade Pagano scored a goal and assisted another as the Redbird handled the Eagles to open up the 2024 season.
